This was finally it. My death. I felt all the air squeeze out of my lungs until I heard it - the deep, hoarse voice that sent chills down my spine. "Stop the execution," the king said with a warning edge that even a fool couldn't miss. Damian's face twisted with surprise that barely concealed his fury at the King's words. "Your Highness," he repeated, masking his irritation with a shallow bow, "This is the execution we spoke about a while ago that involved the treason." From his facial expression, I could tell he felt the need to state that. The king's gaze turned steely, cutting through Damian's attempt at justification. "Why aren't your guards backing down?" he asked, his voice dripping with authority that left murmurs in the crowd. "Or have you forgotten who commands this realm, Alpha Damian?" "Penelope Neville will be taken into my custody..." He declared. "Any attempt to go against my order or interfere will be met with swift and severe punishment worse than death." THE BALL

I walked behind Liam through an unfamiliar hallway that strwtched endlessly. He led me out of my room on Alexander's orders, and I followed without asking any questions. There was a lot to think about aside the ball, and too little time for proper composure.

Four days ago, I was obsessing over how beautiful and magical every moment of the ball would be, but right now, I could barely concentrate on it. It's funny how I was not even looking forward to experiencing the ball anymore. All I wanted to do was to stay hidden behind the walls and doors of my room, away from him.

Liam stopped when he reached the grand stairs. "Luna..." He held out his hand, offering support for my smooth descent down the stairs.

Reality crashed back as the lively chatter of numerous guests and the soft music reached my ears. The ball was close; I could tell this much.

Nodding curtly, I walked to his side, and placed my hand on his. As we descended the stairs carefully, I caught glimpses of the grand hall through the archways.

Crystal chandeliers cast a dazzling light over the elegantly dressed guests, their laughter and conversations mingling with the soft strains of music. While there were spaces for people to talk amongst themselves, there was also a grand space for people to dance at the center of the huge hall that stretched farther from my view through the archways.

This beat everything I'd imagined.

When we reached the foot of the stairs, I paused, taking in the stupendous view in front of me. At the far end of the hall, opposite the stairs, the entire wall was made of see-through glass, from the ceiling to the floor, which opened up to the night, revealing an astonishing vista of the gardens with different flowers that glowed from the bright moon light, and the twinkling stars.

I knew werewolves were traditional beings who paid so much importance to the full moon and its significance. But this... The entire view in front of me was a living, breathing fairytale.

There wasn't enough time to bask in the splendid view in front of me. Liam squeezed on my hand gently, waking me from my little fairytale. He towered beside me as I looked at him, but the glow from the crowd at the background distracted me from his presence. My enchanting moment was marred by a gnawing dread when I turned to the crowd in front of me. My eyes scanned the crowd, searching for a familiar, unwelcoming face.

When Liam let go of my hand and stood in front of me, my eyes snapped back to him. His eyes were full of concern. "Are you alright, Luna?" he asked softly.

I forced yet another smile, hoping it would reach my eyes. "I'm okay, Liam... Just a little overwhelmed."

His eyes narrowed on my face. "Do you feel pain anywhere?"

I shook my head, catching glimpses of some guests who were now staring at the both of us, and whispering cheerfully as they recognized the King's Beta.

"No, Liam. I'm fine." I said hurriedly, hoping he'd drop the conversation and lead me to another place without so much attention.

He nodded. "Alexander wants you within his sight, so I'm taking you to him," he explained as he looked at the far end of the room.

My eyes followed the direction he stared to the podium that lay ahead. There was a grand chair that was placed on it, and on the chair with a bored expression, sat Alexander. His commanding presence was undeniable, even with the distance.

Draven stood by his side, tending to some guests, mostly ladies, who were trying to catch Alexander's attention. The scene was almost surreal, like something out of a meticulously painted portrait.
