“Would you mind looking after Jess this evening?” Lydia asked. “I have an appointment with the doctor and Marcus has to take me.”
I let out a sigh of relief and laughed. Luke’s posture relaxed significantly as well.
“Why did you have to make it sound like it was a life-or-death situation?” Luke asked her exasperatedly.
“Well, I didn’t know if you guys were busy or not,” Lydia asked, her cheeks flushing from embarrassment.
“We can look after her,” I said to her. “We haven’t got any plans.”
“Great! We owe you guys,” she said happily.
“Don’t be silly,” I said, looking over at Jess. She was playing with her pony dolls. “I would look after her anytime, no questions asked.”
Lydia sent a grateful smile my way and I sent a warm one right back. I helped her finish setting up the table and the guys brought out the food. We all sat around the table in the backyard and began eating.
Marcus and Luke were bickering over some sports game that was on recently.
