Chapter 38: Motivation

Emily’s perspective:

Night is setting in, though the yellow rays of this land of endless sun still shine through the rows of spruce. Luckily enough, we set camp in a grouping of trees that provide enough shade to at least give us the ability to pretend the sun has set.

In the coolness of the shade, I lean back against the tree from which I hung a tarp we borrowed from the pack of one of our would-be assassins. My bare feet stretch out close to warm in the glow of our campfire. I lean forward and rub at the sore callouses already forming.

Under the tarp, Gabby is bivouacked, getting much-needed rest after the day’s arduous journey. Though Grant was the one tasked with bearing her down the trail, the strength it takes to heal a broken bone while not using it, let alone when your body is constantly being shaken around, takes a toll on the body that I wish my little sister didn’t have to experience.
