Selene stared at the dashboard of her car as she tried to make a sharp maneuver around the bend. There was a loud man that was yelling in her rear so she did not know what to do but just go forward. She was late for class and she had eventually gotten stuck in traffic which was the worst possible outcome that she could have today. It was difficult juggling both worlds but that was her lot and she needed to deal with it.
She was a witch that had to deal with the other world by night and this one by day. Her day was already demanding enough without her professors being the proper dicks that they were.
The sun blared hot as she tried to make the turn and cut out of the traffic.
She watched her phone ring as she took a U-turn, cutting out of the traffic from the left to exit into a surprisingly free road that she was now wondering why no one else had thought to take. It was past nine and her class had been scheduled for eight that morning.
She had done all that she could do to get out of bed as early as possible but the city hated her and there was nothing that she could do about it.
What had she done last night? Her mother would be mortified if she had any idea of the type of danger that she had exposed herself to. To go to a den of wolves, literally was beyond stupid. Even for her decidedly impulsive self, it6 was a terrible plan but it was needed.
No one was willing to do what needed to be done to make this happen and she was sick of it.
The danger that they had stalled off long enough had finally found its way to their doorstep and there was no way to face it than head-on. At least she was not the only one that understood that.
She recalled his face, her face almost going red as she mentally cautioned herself. She had spent a huge part of the night in a wolf's den and had come out alive. She was not exactly defenseless but there were some things that witches did not just do. That is jump head-first into the unknown. They were more tactical and stayed on the sidelines. They did not fight unless they were provoked and she had made a good show of that. A show that they were no weaklings. That she could tear them limb for limb from the inside out.
Her mother was proud of the fact that she was the strongest witch in the last five hundred years. She often made it a point of note to constantly remind her that she had a duty and all that.
She was just trying to live up to that expectation, except for the fact that she would not approve of her methods.
She had a headache from simply being out that late and what was worse was it was on a school night. They had not come to any agreement but the truth was she needed the power of the wolves. Their sheer numbers alone were something fierce and she could use that.
She was majoring in medicine just like she had always wanted. It had always been her dream to become a doctor and she was finally living it. The only logical choice to study it was a school that was on the outskirts of the city. As expected, her father had been opposed to her going that far away from home but the decision was never hers to make. She needed to do this for her education and that was exactly what she had done.
The city was seemingly a lot to handle but she did not intend on backing down. Not now, not ever. She was big enough for the challenge.
'Fuck you too!' she heard someone yell from the lineup that she had just left a couple of seconds ago. She was glad that she had not waited for what would come out of that automobile deadlock before she made the decision.
They did not know what plagued their world. Witches had protected the balance for centuries and no one would ever give them credit for it.
She sighed inwardly as she tried to put the thought out of her mind. They did not know what plagued their world. The truth was that their supernatural problem would not stay that way for long.
There had been numerous disappearances in the last couple of weeks and it was too convenient to chalk it up to a daylight problem.
That was what they called the humans. The day walkers. Anything that was considered supernatural was called a nightwalker. There were wolves, and vampires even though they didn't have any in this region, thank the fated sisters for that by the way. She didn't think that this town could handle the eternal feud that always seemed to happen between vampires and wolves. Actually, she was sure that it could not.
The creatures, some more obscure than others ranged from djinns, shapeshifters, and even darker creatures like ghouls.
She could still remember when she found out about the supernatural. It had been not so long ago yet it felt like a lifetime ago.
Selene turned her around to check what was going on as she tried to maneuver her way out of the deadlock completely when she realized all over again that she was really late. She did not have time to do this. Not with them, not with anybody. She could have easily used magic but she did not want to call attention to herself. Even during the day, it was not advisable to causally use magic. Not with the demons that were popping up everywhere. You never could tell who was who anymore.
She groaned as her phone chimed a second time this morning. She was so late that it almost felt like she shouldn't bother.
She had Professor Gallagher's class and that was not always a good thing. While the course that he taught was one of her favorites, he, however, hated her or so she thought. She was his least favorite student and he made sure that she knew it. Sometimes, she felt like he was a little racist but she didn't have any proof that what he dished out to her in the class. That was all she could afford to come up with from his attitude.
Selene had never really been a fan of her skin. It had drawn attention to her more than she would care for. Especially with her professors. It was crazy that she also had to attend a little lesson that her aunt had started when she was only sixteen. This time she was not attending as a student. She was a teacher.
