Chapter 7

Just like she had said, her grimoire came out and she didn't know if it was because of what she was feeling but her magic conjured some sort of cloud over them, a purple cloud that sprinkled roses downwards as he took her lips for his own without a care in the world.

He took a swim back away from her almost immediately. She could see the ferocious growl that he was suppressing at the back of his throat.

She could see his eyes glowing. A primal instinct that he could not control was trying to surface.

"I'm sorry." He growled. "We should go." He told her, swimming in the opposite direction as they both went towards the bank of the lake.

"Is something wrong?" She managed to ask after a few minutes of silence that she could not bear.

"It's me." He told her. "It isn't you. I shouldn't have done that." He added.

Selene could not hide her disappointment this time.

Maybe he hated it. Maybe he regretted kissing her or something because she was that bad.

But just as she was about to let her mind begin a thousand reasons why she was the problem, he tipped her chin up with his index finger.

"I promise." He said with a seriousness she didn't know he was capable of.

Something she was not sure she had seen was his eyes turning part red but maybe she just imagined that.

"We should go now." He told her.

Selene woke up in a cold sweat, not entirely surprised at what she had just seen. The events of the day had left quite an impression down there. She was no closer to uncovering the truth which bothered her more than she cared to admit to anyone at all.

That demon or hellhound was after her for some reason and she did not seem to know why that was. Was it because she could see the things that they were planning?

Maybe that was it.

She had gone home that night and slept, as usual, half expecting there to be a dream that showed her things that she did not ask for, and there most likely was.

What sent chills down her spine was the fact that they were not changing in her plan.

"You failed me Asmodeus." A thick voice that sent chills down her spine said from somewhere deep in the darkness.

"My king, I will try again." A demon that was obviously high ranking was standing with its back facing her.

"You are almost out of chances Asmodeus!" the voice thundered back at him, making the whole place shake with vigor. "This is your last chance to get the key." He added after a brief silence and everything had calmed down. "You will not get any more chances —" the voice added. "But first. Do take care of the rat." He said before vanishing into the darkness.

"Yes, my King." He said as he turned around to instantly fixate his sights on her like he knew she had been there all along.

Selene instantly panicked as she turned around to make for it. But where was she supposed to go? She needed to wake up.

"Are you lost dear one?" the one they called Asmodeus said with darkened teeth and his horns in place. "Let me help you find your way." He said, reaching towards her to grab her arm.

Selene screamed out loud and woke up in a cold sweat.

She instantly cried out in pain as she checked her arm where he had grabbed her.

She had a palm print that had reddened her wrists where he'd held her.

It hurt like hell, she thought but then that was a weird thing to say.

She reached for the light beside her and looked at her alarm to check what the time was.

It was just a little past 3 A.M. She knew what she had just seen and it made her blood run cold in more ways than one. She did not want to witness that again. She didn't want to witness him. Either of them for that matter.

Freya rushed into her room, startled by the noise that her friend had made from her sleep.

"Are you okay?" She asked her, looking around for any threats in the vicinity.

"I'm fine. I just need water." She told Freya.

She left the room and came back with a glass of water.

"Is it the dreams again?" She asked. "You shouldn't lie to your obviously better half." She added as soon as she read the hesitation on Selene's face. "I just want to help you, that's all."

"It keeps getting worse." She admitted to her.

"I'll speak to your grandmother in the morning. Maybe there's something she can do." Freya told Selene as she put her palm on her head.

"Try and catch some sleep. I'll be here if you need anything." She told her as she urged her to lay back down.

Selene had not been home in years and she somehow didn't regret it. But maybe her grandmother would know what to do.
