Chapter 54: New Friend

[Vereena]

Weeks passed and we finally arrived at the Isthmus of Panama. The travelers got off the ship soon after we anchored the port and Hugo gave me a pouch full of gold coins, allowing me to roam around the area while he and his crew replenished our supply. I thanked him for his generosity and promised to pay him when we get home.

Unlike Barbados, where slavery is pervasive around the area, Panama thrives in trading, sundries, and shops that sell all kinds of baubles and trinkets good for gifts. Also, Panama varies in climate from Barbados. This time of year, this place is quite humid, the soil is somewhat damp enough that emits an after-the-rain scent and it's not mucky, unlike Morinfail. The air did not reek of rotten fish, but of salty air and seaweeds.

The majority of the locals speak Spanish, but among the merchants, I could make out an English accent.
