Chapter 60

Nick arched an eyebrow, and his gaze shifted for a split second to the man before he met Todd’s silent question with a slight head shake. Slaves were usually pretty easy to spot, and no one had a reason to hide the fact they were a slave or owned one on the riverboat. This was the first clue either of them had that this man was a slave, or rather, was appearing to be one.

Their dealer introduced himself as Bill, and the other people joining the game made introductions. Todd had the distinct feeling this was for his benefit only, and they all knew each other perfectly well.

“I haven’t seen you on this boat before this trip, Mr. McCabe,” the woman said.

“First time.”

“Mrs. Larue mentioned you were from the east,” she said.

Todd nodded. “Labrador Protectorate.” He drew a breath and on a whim added, “Near the eastern seaboard.” The woman was fishing for something, that was clear. Todd could cast some bait as well.

“Fishing communities.”
