“Mr. McCabe, do you dance?” Heidi laid one arm on Todd’s arm and Nick practically collapsed in his chair, relief all over his face.

“I do and I would be delighted. A little later. I am promised to someone else.” Todd stood and laid his napkin on the table. “Isn’t that right, Lucky?”

The deer in the hunter’s sights expression was back on Nick’s face. “No…you don’t…not on my account.”

Nick’s words—they didn’t really make sense anyway—ground to a stop when Todd stepped around Heidi’s chair, leaned down, and took Nick by the hand. “Yes. I do. I did promise you this evening, after all. And I do need to keep my Luck happy.”

Mouth opening and closing but without any words coming out, Nick followed Todd to the dance floor. Finally, he said, “In front of all these people?”

Todd chuckled low and in Nick’s ear as he pulled his mate close. “Take a good look around. Most of the people suck at this, and they’re not going to pay any attention to you. Now relax and—”
