TETHER

United Human Calendar Year 4701. Almost 5000 years after humans discovered they were not alone in the universe and began their long war with the other two intergalactic civilisations of Draconians and Dwarves. Suddenly, a sound seemingly as though reality itself was being torn apart was heard by every single intelligent life-form in the universe before a voice followed. The voice told them that it would create a virtual platform called Tether, where all the rates would conduct their conflicts with each other. From now on, any large-scale massacres or wars between the civilisations, which could regress the technological, cultural and intellectual progress of the civilisations would be considered treason, and they would be erased. to prove its point, the voice declared a leader from each of the three civilisations; who had conducted such massacres, as dead, and they died instantly, along with all their wealth and belongings. 20 years later, the entire universe is playing the game, not only due to being forced to do so by their governments but also the various rewards, both monetary and otherwise found inside. Jack, a normal human who lost a large part of his family, enters the game after a few years in the military, and a few months of being a free mercenary. However, he comes across a 'stone', which is both a blessing and a curse, giving him incredible powers in the game, but also making him the target of all the powerful and influential humans and other species. Ultimately, all the powerful humans band together, and first rip away his guild from the inside, before laying siege to his home base and finally seizing the item by killing him. ... However, the 'stone' seems to have powers beyond the game and brings Jack back to his past before he lost his family. What will Jack do? And how will he get revenge on those who caused him harm?

[Welcome, Erebus, to the world of Tether]

Jack returned to his spot behind the old man and sighed before continuing to read his book. There were around 9 days until the next update, where most likely, the currency exchange system would be introduced, allowing players to exchange in-game gold for their local currency. However, this currency exchange system would not be handled by anyone and would be completely volatile depending on demand and supply. Some currencies might have high values while others might have low, and these exchanges were open to market manipulation, even those with malicious intent.

However, neither the people nor the government knew the true value of Tether yet, and it would only be revealed after the first kingdom-wide auction, where a lot of 'interesting' items would be released, as well as a piece of news that would utterly shock the entire universe, and would be the true reason why the various races would rush to take over Tether. The first kingdom-wide auctions would finally reveal what 'surprises' 'they' had installed into Tether for the universe.

Unfortunately, for now, Jack was stuck reading books. His best guess was that he either needed to read a certain number of books or wait behind the old man for a certain amount of time until the old man finally decided to accept him as a disciple.

Jack knew that the old man was not the tower master, as he had seen images of the tower master, who actually looked like a middle-aged man. However, this old man was either just as strong, if not stronger than the tower master. Therefore, he simply waited, and read. At least, reading brought his sub-class level up, which would help him greatly in the future, after all, everyone would realise the importance of subclasses much later on. And by that time, while everyone would be trying their best to level up their subclasses, Jack would already have his at a sufficient level.

Furthermore, his sub-class was one that would help him greatly as a golem mage.

Time flew by just like that, and a few books in, Jack decided to log out since it was almost time to wake up in real life. However, just before leaving, he decided to check on his sub-class experience once more.

Subclass: Engineer Lv 2 (411/1000)

Not a single one of his other stats had increased, however, his Engineer subclass had reached Lv 2, and was in fact, halfway through it! The only downside was, that subclasses only began to show their true worth after you levelled them up to Lv 5, when they could fuse with your normal class to upgrade it. Or, you could hold onto it until it reached Lv 10, and create a second main class! Of course, with the amount of exp required after Lv 5, it was almost impossible to accomplish, and no one even knew of this feature for the first 5 years of the game. Only after that point, did a player who had joined the game just to practice his pottery skills, reached Lv 10 in his subclass, and was able to get a second main class.

The benefit of this? Simple! You could have those many more active skills! Which was essentially a cheat against anyone at the same level as you.

And this was the objective Jack was aiming for. Because that would mean he could store those many more spells.

And so, Jack logged out.

The next morning was given free to the students since no portion had been prepared for the students to learn yet. One had to remember, this academy had only been formed a few days ago, and although the teachers existed, they were simply military drill instructors who knew about discipline, but not VR.

It would take some time for a proper schedule and portion to be fixed for the students, while also searching for teachers.

In fact, based on Jack's, or even Kai and Lucy's levels in-game, they should be able to qualify as teachers themselves easily, but for personal reasons, they did not. Lucy was not from a powerful background, and revealing her in-game level would likely only cause issues for her, and the same could be said for Jack. Kai, on the other hand, had his own reasons for not revealing his level.

Since it was a free day, Jack was about to return to his dorm, when the teacher from yesterday barged into the mess hall and yelled.

"Alright suckers! Everyone get out onto the track and run 100 laps before dispersing and doing whatever you want!"

And so, everyone ran. Jack decided, that since he had the day free, he would head back to the dorms and enter Tether. However, as soon as he entered his room, he recalled something he had forgotten about.

In his previous life, his mother and father had died, and he did not talk too much with the old couple who had helped them. On the other hand, his sister would normally just rest at home, and he would greet her a little every time he returned. Therefore, he had gotten used to such a schedule, of not meeting his family for weeks, even months on end.

Now, however, they were perfectly fine in the territory of the Glory Foundation, and Jack decided to take this time to call them up.

After a quick 20-minute chat with his family, Jack returned to the game and began reading once more. Of course, half a day later, he had to get out to have some food.

Walking out of the dorms, Jack noticed that Kai was worriedly rushing toward him with tears in his eyes.

"Who punched you?" Jack asked from a distance.

"That is not it boss. But even if someone were to punch me, their hand would break before they could do it."

"Why? Your head is made of steel?"

"No, I will break their hands with this brick" Kai said while lifting the brick in his left hand, causing Jack to take a few steps back.

"Anyways boss! Someone is hitting on your girlfriend!" Kai exclaimed softly into Jack's ears, which caused Jack to be thoroughly confused.

"Who?"

Kai assumed Jack was asking about who was the one irritating his girlfriend, and so he said, "Ollie Smith. He apparently has a Lv 7 in-game character, and is also the leader of his class."

Bemused at how some dude became his girlfriend, Jack asked, "Since when?"

"A few minutes ago. That buff friend of yours is in trouble for trying to protect your girlfriend."

A slight frown appeared on Jack's face as he finally understood the situation. This fellow had assumed Ava to be his girlfriend, which was a huge misunderstanding… though it was not as if he minded such a relationship, for now, Bros before h*es. Max was in danger.

And so, Jack followed Kai, and soon the two reached one of the canteen rooms, where Jack wanted to go anyways. Along the way, Lucy joined them as the three burst into the room, only to witness Max silently standing to the side, while Ava was randomly kicking at a pile of... mutilated bodies?

It seemed that she did not require his help after all. Jack thought to himself as he ignored the chaos and went to get his food.
