CHAPTER 13: YOU THINK HE DIED OF CANCER?

"You just killed him!" She pointed at Raymond's body. His blood was already coagulated. "Gimme a reason I shouldn' shoot'chu now!" She clicked the gun and was ready to go further. So helped her God.

"You coul' shoot me but'chu'll die before regretin' it." His voice was firm with certainty. He glanced at Raymond's body. "Sorry 'bout that," he shrugged lightly, "collateral damage."

"A life?" Tanya couldn't believe her ears.

"To a million?" He asked.

"What million?" She asked. "Like a million lives you've killed?"

"Yes, maybe." He sighed. "Maybe the millions or more your father endangered with his project. You think he died of cancer?"

Tanya wagged her head. It was highly impossible. She would have bet her life no one knew of her father's project. But now?

"Who are you?" Tanya asked with more amazement than curiosity.

"Call me your helper, or call me Victor."

"You could have killed me!"

"I wasn't!" Again, there was truth in his voice.

Tanya could not believe herself. This man knows a lot about, like every assassin should. But her father's project? He could have killed her, but was not- if he was saying the truth. He killed a cop. He offered to save her. How was she even sure he did not shoot Laura mistakenly? He seemed like someone who planned everything, even to his breath and the blinking of his eyes. He seemed supertrained, but by who? Whoever trained this man would know more about her. This was no more about her love life, she was sure. It had grown bigger than that. Her love with Raymond was just a trigger, and Laura was a pawn, a fool in the bigger picture.

Suddenly two questions stroke her mind. If Laura was a pawn, who is the real figure against her? And if Victor was trained (for a time like this), who trained him?

Who sought her destruction and who wanted to save her? She burned to know.

All these while her thoughts drew connections between dots, Victor looked at her. It was as if he knew what was running through her mind.

"We need to move now Tanya." He stretched his hand at her.

Just then, there was a loud thud. It came from the main door, someone had entered. Friend or foe, Tanya required vigilance.
