Chapter 5 – I Waited for You

Nam Ji Ah cries as the children crowd her at the edge of the roof.  Ji Ah falls from the roof. Lee Yeon intercepts her before she hits the ground. She sees him covered in gashes. She holds and tells him not to die. A tear falls from her face. A bubble of energy forms around her. Lee Yeon opens his eyes and says he's found her. Lee Yeon brushes away Ji Ah's tears. He says he waited for her. Ji Ah cradles him close and cries.

Ji Ah tends Lee Yeon's knife wounds. She knows he's hurt because of her. She didn't think he'd want a hospital, so she's tending him. She tells stories from her childhood, including her belief that her parents were killed by non-humans. That kept her in a mental facility until she spotted the doctor stealing drugs. She bartered her discharge for silence.

Flashback…a young Ji Ah cries for her parents in front of their empty house. Two fireflies appear and hover over her hands. She smiles.

Ji Ah told herself her parents comforted that night.

Lee Yeon stares at Ji Ah remembers watching the young Ji Ah trying to catch the fireflies and smiling.

He's been her hero in hiding?

Ji Ah finishes tending Lee Yeon and puts him to bed. She watches him sleep. She remembers him saying he waited for her.

The next morning, Lee Yeon watches Ji Ah sleep. He touches her face and smiles.

Holy smokes, there are talisman everywhere. A boy studies/skims math.

Lee Yeon peace is destroyed when Vet Gu Shin Joo burst in the room with worry. Ji Ah recognizes him. Shin Joo hugs Lee Yeon in relief. He even cries. Shin Joo tells Ji Ah he's been by Lee Yeon's side since Lee Yeon was a mountain spirit and now acts as his doctor and housekeeper. Ji Ah can't believe that Shin Joo is a fox.

Lee Rang , Lee Yeon's half-brother, offers a sales clerk an expensive watch for an inexpensive watch his father gave him.  Fellow fox Ki Yoo Ri drives Lee Rang away when he exits the jewelry store.

Shin Joo overshares good and bad about Lee Yeon.

Lee Rang tosses the inexpensive watch out the window. He's happy someone is missing something precious to him, just like him.

Lee Yeon enjoys his mint ice cream. Shin Joo enjoys it too. Lee Yeon says ice cream makes life sweet. She asks about his first love. Lee Yeon says her name was A Eum.

Flashback…A young A Eum pets Lee Yeon like he's a dog. He doesn't like it. She introduces herself. He tells her to leave. She doesn't want to. He shows his power. She offers to take care of him if he serves her.

Lee Yeon says she came back a day later and they got along better.

Flashback…A young A Eum's ability for archery is low. She surprises him when she hits an apple he tosses in the air. She declares she likes him.

Flashback…Young woman A Eum practices archery. She tells Lee Yeon she's going to kill her father, king of the nation. He steadies her hand and she shoots straight.

Lee Yeon explains she was the 7th daughter and abandoned by the king. She wanted to kill her father because the king wasn't really her father but an evil being, the earth dragon. Ji Ah guesses the earth dragon is an Imoogi.

The man is secretive about the baby to the new nanny. He directs her to the baby's bedroom. She enters and sees a boy skimming books. She sees the skin of a dragon on his face and arm. He grabs her and consumes her through touch. She screams. The man listens.

Ji Ah asks who A Eum died. Lee Yeon won't say noting not knowing is better sometimes. Ji Ah isn't interested in living an imitation of someone else's life. Lee Yeon reveals his injuries have almost healed.

Yoo Ri frets over her scars. She notes Shin Joo looks at her with pity. Lee Rang suggests she remove his eyes. Lee Rang hears something with his super ears and order her to stop the car.

Three baseball players throw balls at a chained dog. Lee Rang intervenes. He hurts one of the boys. Yoo Ri dispatches the other two. Yoo Ri throws a hood over the first player.

Lee Yeon takes Ji Ah to a morgue. He taps the wall and order the spirits come out. It's the sisters that terrorized Ji Ah the previous evening. He chastises them for bothering Ji Ah. She asks their names. She shows them an article and asks if they are victims of an accident where child abuse was involved.

A relative at the sisters' memorial is angry about the article. The father cries.

The three baseball players are all hooded in front of the crusher at a junk yard. He makes them pick their fate from a deck of chance cards he made. He claims the odds are 50 / 50.  The first player picks "talent donation". Lee Rang says he loves baseball. The boys offer to teach him. Lee Rang says the donation is permanent and the donator won't be able to play again.

Ji Ah arrives at the sisters' memorial. The father explains being a truck driver kept him away from his girls. He claims his brother had a job interview the day the girls died. Ji Ah asks about the cherries. The father shows her the expensive fruit. Lee Yeon pick one from a container then asks the father to come with her.

Lee Yeon threatens to put the brother in the fire. He disputes that he hurt his nieces. When Lee Yeon pushes him close to the flames, the brother admits he molested the little girls claiming he didn't mean to but drink drove him to it. Lee Yeon reveals the brother. The father can't believe his ears. He yells at his brother for his actions. He sobs. The sisters watch their father sob. They lean next to him and offer comfort.

The injured dog follows Lee Rang and Yoo Ri. She suggests they take the dog with him.

Flashback…A young Lee Rang cries over his dead puppy. He calls to his brother Lee Yeon.

Flashback…Lee Yeon gives the puppy to Lee Rang who grows to love him.

Lee Rang's voiceover "I lost everything the day Lee Yeon left". He refuses to let the dog come with them.  Yoo Ri calls to the dog anyhow.

Ji Ah bids the sisters goodbye. They wave and smiles and disappear. They turn and the remaining children's spirits are there. Lee Yeon tells them to leave. Lee Yeon explains the children died young making their parents sad. Ji Ah smiles at Lee Yeon. She says he's different today. She thanks him for everything. She smiles. It begins to rain. Lee Yeon opens his umbrella and asks if alcohol or a meal will be how she thanks him. Ducking under his umbrella she picks alcohol. He asks where her umbrella is. She claims she didn't bring it. As they walk away, we see Ji Ah's umbrella on the bench where they just sat.

As they walk through the rain, they both smile. Lee Yeon claims he always carries the umbrella because rain isn't good for his fur. They smile and bicker.

Shin Joo arrives at clinic and is startled that Yoo Ri is there. She asks him to treat the dog. He asks for his necklace so he can talk to the dog. Yoo Ri gives him the necklace. Shin Joo talks to the dog and learns that the dog isn't a pet. He tells Yoo Ri she did well by saving the dog. She watches him treat the dog.

Lee Yeon and Ji Ah drink and eat. Lee Yeon can't believe she doesn't like Toy Story 3. She likes zombie films. Their tastes don't seem to meld. At least they both like Korean food and don't have many friends. They clink glasses. Ji Ah asks Lee Yeon what his dream is. He thinks and says he wants to become human. She teases him for being spoiled and not really wanting the reality of humanity. Lee Yeon asks what her dream is. Ji Ah says wishes her parents could be in her future. Lee Yeon asks her to text him a picture of her parents.

Lee Yeon steadies Ji Ah as they walk. When they arrive at her house, she thanks him and heads in. He wishes her good night. She returns the sentiment. He waves. She waves. Two fireflies greet her outside the house. She smiles. She remembers the fireflies from when she was a child. She guesses Lee Yeon sent her the fireflies then and now. She smiles. Lee Yeon watches and smiles.

Sweet scene!

Kim Sae Rom, Pyo Jae Hwan, and Ji Ah's boss work at the station. Ji Ah arrives.

Lee Yeon arrives at the Afterlife Immigration Office where Hyun Ui Ong teaches a class to the sisters. They don't want to go to the underworld. He says they don't have a choice. The sisters ask if they can take a keepsake.  Ui Ong looks at his wife, aka Granny. She shakes her head no. Lee Yeon says Granny is a stickler. Ui Ong takes the girls to the underworld. Before they go, Lee Yeon presses the keepsake into a sisters' hand. Granny calls him a softy. Lee Yeon grouses the underworld needs better rules and a younger leader. Plying Granny with iced coffee Lee Yeon asks her to find Ji Ah's parents. She claims not to know where they are. She clarifies she can't see them which means they aren't in the afterlife or living room. She tells him to talk to those that took them.

As Ji Ah and her team enter the lobby and high-powered man and his entourage arrive. Ji Ah's boss greets the man with deference. The man notes their show has good ratings. Ji Ah teases that their show's solid ratings deserve a meal on the company. The man agrees and says a meal on the company is in order. The smile fades as he walks away.

The man that saved Ji Ah from getting on the bus with Lee Rang in disguise (recall she gave him a piggyback) is taken aback when Lee Yeon approaches him. Lee Yeon asks if he's the old totem of Yeou Gogae. The man confirms he is. Lee Yeon shows him the picture of Ji Ah's parents. He claims not to recognize them. Lee Yeon doesn't believe him. The man shares the governor knows about them.

Ji Ah and the team eat. Sae Rom marvels at Lee Yeon's handsome face, body and car when exits his car. Lee Yeon enters and walks to the group. He tells Ji Ah she needs to come with him. She's taken aback. He grabs her wrist, leads her outside, and tells her to get into the car. She complies. Her coworkers watch the car drive away.

As they drive, Lee Yeon plays music Ji Ah should like. She smiles.

On a rooftop, Lee Rang shakes the man that saved Lee Yeon and says he's looking for something. He wants the eyebrows of a tiger. The man claims not to have seen them. Lee Rang says the man must fall. The man decides he must tell what he knows. As he leaves, he says foxes are a pain.

Lee Yeon and Ji Ah walk together. Many are in costumes. Lee Yeon tells her to wait for him while he checks something out. Ji Ah sees women looking at period costumes. She smiles. When Lee Yeon returns, Ji Ah isn't there. He looks for her. He's sees the back of a woman that could be A Eum. He follows. When catches up with her, it is Ji Ah. She smiles.

Flashback…Lee Yeon tells A Eum when she's reincarnated, he'll find her.

Ji Ah says she was looking for him. Lee Yeon is mesmerized. Then he grabs her and kisses her. Ji Ah's eyes widen in shock. Then she closes her eyes and enjoys the moment and the kiss.
