The beast roared as it overlooked the city. It leaned on the skyscraper before pushing itself off and began to walk on its four legs.
*CRASH!!*
We heard the beast destroy its surroundings as it crawled within the city.
The leader of our team yelled for us to hurry to the tower. Though I really do doubt whether going to the tower would keep us safe for the next two days.
We quickly began to run. We heard the creature roar as it destroyed whatever was nearby, the alien insects didn't seem to have been spared as we heard shrieks of what sounded to be fright from them.
I could barely hear my footsteps as I ran with heavy breaths. George and Jason didn't seem to be any better as they both had constipated looks.
*Screech!*
"Ah!" One of the soldiers was suddenly attacked from a rogue bug. We quickly started shooting it, but as we started firing, another bug took us by surprise and tackled George to the ground.
Prioritizing George over the other soldier, Jason and I were able to save him but not the other.
Our leader had a look of anguish as he looked at his fallen friend. He looked away from his friend as he gave me a hate filled glare.
Sorry. Was I all could think of when I saw his glare.
"Sorry to cut in on your little stand off. But we should really get going." Jason said as he finished looking over George's body.
The leader slowly nodded towards him before leading us toward the tower, of course not before he gave me one last meaningful glare.
According to my memory of when we were shown the map of the city, we should currently be 3 miles away from the tower. Meaning as long as we kept on going while we poured internal energy into our bodies we should get there within a few minutes.
During our dash, we noticed another team running from a block away. They also seemed to have noticed us as they ran towards us.
"Maria?" I blurted out when I saw who was commanding this team.
She gave me a nod before turning her attention to the leader. Maria's team as well as my leader seemed shocked that I knew Maria well enough to call her without her credentials.
We ran together as we shared all the information we had. Maria said that she saw the beast destroy without prejudice and that the bugs were now only focusing on escaping the beasts rampage.
It seems that the alliance between the sea creature and insects only lasted until the gator escaped its prison.
While we ran we had to face a couple beetles, we showed the other soldiers how to kill them without using guns, saving ammunition and effectively running faster.
*Roar!*
*CRASH!!*
As the tower was finally in sight a giant scaled wall appeared from the sky. It turned its head towards us and gave us what I assumed to be a mocking smile.
The soldiers freaked out before composing themselves immediately. I stared at the creature nervously, I looked toward Maria only to see her with her still blank expression take out a metallic stick.
If it weren't for the texture and lines that spread across it, I would've assumed it to be a plastic toy.
Her light blue aura moved from her body to the stick, and like in the movies. She fired a blue energy beam from it.
The gator started shrieking in pain when it was hit. It's tail slamming the walls around it, it even started rolling its body on the ground.
"Quickly, to the left!" I heard Maria raise her voice as she commanded
We followed her orders and retreated to the left just as the gator rolled by our previous location.
Maria was behind our group as my previous leader lead us on another route to the tower.
She fired her stick, which was basically a wand at the gator when it tried crawling towards us.
The creature roared in annoyance and pain, destroying everything in its path. I looked back to see Maria's small face teemed in sweat and wore a pained expression.
She was obviously in pain when she fired those beams. I felt frustrated when I watched her fight, I knew that she was older than me but seeing her small petite body tremble in anguish made me just want to hold and protect her.
Ridiculous, I know.
The gator roared once more before it started fleeing from us. It seemed to have gotten tired of tanking those beams. Maria sighed when she saw that, unconsciously lowering her guard.
We finally reached the tower after a few more turns.
