Surpassing Magic

A tale of someone taken from Earth, thrown recklessly into a new world and forced to survive. There will be struggles to find answers, safety, and happiness as a new life begins. This novel will have a moderate pace with a number of long term set ups. If you are looking to see a guy get unbelievable powerful in 10 chapters your in the wrong place. As for romance and anything more mature (18+) I have not scripted it yet, but I am going to say most likely there will be some, but not without fair warning. Bear with me, this is my first novel. Any feedback is appreciated and will be read and considered.

10. The Tutors

Standing at the edge of the doorway were two men. The man to left was tall and lanky. His head nearly reached the top of the already impressively tall door frame. Atop that mountain peak of stature was a small hat that contain spilling strands of messy black hair. He wore an ill-fitting suit that betrayed his fashion sense as something far below this current attire. His face was kind though, it sat on his tall frame like the morning sun, warm and gentle. The man to the right fit a different image though. His frame was shorter at only a 5' frame. He was wider, but not from fat. His musculature was pressed against the seams of his suit displaying a strong, but tone build. This face was serious, with eyes that did not waver of move without purpose. He had a face that looked to have been carved from marble, with perfect yellow hair shaped so purposefully it seemed rigid. His very person radiated structure, stability and uniformity. Yursa turned to the men and bowed slightly, a respectful gesture, but not one that would be given to someone of nobility, an honest greeting.

"Welcome to the Gliston estate tutors." Gliston was the last name of Castus' family. When his father had gained his title, he had specifically chosen to change his last name to this. Where he came up with it or for why Castus had never known. The taller man sauntered into the foyer of the house and the shorter man strode with confidence. Tyrus also appeared from around the corner coming to greet his chosen tutors for Castus. He stopped in-between Castus and the tutors and began an introduction.

"Ben, Reid, this is Castus my firstborn son, please do your best to educate them." Pivoting away from the men and facing Castus. "My son, Ben is the taller gentleman and will be training you physically and helping you select which of the noble dueling weapons is most suited to you. The shorter man is Reid, he will be teaching you reading, writing and noble etiquette." In a movement concealed to Ben and Reid Tyrus moved his hand trying to usher Castus to walk forward and greet them. Seeing the movement Castus took the hint and walked forward shaking both of their hands. After breaking away Reid made the first movement. "Per Tyrus' previous instructions we will begin lessons immediately. Ben, I know you wanted to talk with Tyrus before starting your lessons so I will take Castus first." Reid then swiftly began brushing Castus towards a room he had seen his sisters get occasionally tutored in before. They had far fewer lessons from a tutor that would only come by occasionally. He was always taken away to not disturb the lessons sadly, but today that changed.

Contrary to what Castus expected of Reid, he was incredibly patient and kind in his teaching methods. As Castus stumbled over the letters and grammar of reading, Reid would carefully explain where he went wrong and have him start over. Castus quickly started to pick up the language in its written format, which before today had seemed like mindless squiggles of a toddler. While Castus believed Reid to be kind in his teaching methods, Reid was dumbfounded. 'This child is learning at a rate well beyond his years. This is unbelievable. He may learn everything I have to teach him in months.' He was absentmindedly teaching Castus as his excitement welled inside of him.

Reid loved to teach, but so often he was hired by lesser nobles to teach their stuck-up bratty children. Castus was like a breath of fresh air. When he had gotten into this business this is what he had dreamed of. The only downside was at the rate Castus was devouring the knowledge he presented, he may run out of content before his contract was up. Before Castus or Reid had realized three hours had past. Castus certainly wasn't reading books, but his understanding of the language had expanded and for once, the writing he looked out was no longer foreign and bizarre. Ben walked into the room breaking the studious environment. The ill-fitting suit was now gone, and he wore a simple shirt and pants with boots that would make movement simple. He cleared his throat noticing the glare from Reid, who had his daydreams shattered by Ben. His eyes drifted over to Castus. "Castus, its time for your physical training. Follow me outside." Ben flatly stated.

Following him out into the yard Castus noticed what looked like weights from Earth as well as a rack that had been neatly placed against the house. In it were placed a number of weapons. Noticing his gaze Ben quickly corrected Castus' focus. "Don't worry, you'll get your chance to choose you weapon soon. We first have to train you physically so you can handle them."

Castus turned to weights that had been organized in the yard. Ben spoke the thoughts Castus was wondering. "No need to worry, those are also for later, for today we are only going to be doing some light running." Ben's glowing face showed an ominous smile. "Now lets get to running. We have to raise your physical stats up some. That reminds me let me take a look at your current stats." Ben pulled out what looked like a very short spyglass and spun it in his fingers before bringing it up to his eye and lining it up with Castus. "Now this thing isn't the best, but it will at least tell me what your current stats look like. He enthusiastically looked through the spyglass before frowning. "Looks like I've got my work cut out for me."
