“I like the ink sketch portraits in general,” Nate said after a pause. “And the watercolor landscape details.”

Rusty took a minute, trying to surreptitiously consider the exceptional nude Nate had pointedly not mentioned. He decided the beauty of the man wasn’t so much a quality of the subject, as perhaps the effect of Nate’s vision of him—emotion coming through, which spoke volumes about the scope of his talent.

“I work in tech, graphic arts,” Rusty said, leading the conversation to safer ground. “Right now, I’m contracted for a project with a company called Artech. I created a different sort of graphics program that allows the artist to use all sorts of source material as well as creating from scratch within the program, and then put it through trial manipulations, easily marking any step in the transforming process to keep for future work—kind of the way they keep serial frames in an ultrasound.”

“Wow,” Nate said, sounding surprised. “Sounds…challenging.”
