“I’ll be right back,” Guy whispered, on the off chance anyone was around, while picking up the end of Shadow’s rope leash.
“If you’re walking him, I’m coming with you, just in case,” Tone replied softly.
Guy resisted a shudder. The ‘just in case’ reminded him of Mack’s saying that, the night they’d been attacked. He doubted it would happen here, but he couldn’t help looking around carefully as they went to the sidewalk on the far side of the trees.
“Stop worrying, we’ll be fine,” Tone told him. “I…” He shook his head.
“What?”
“Nothing. It’s stupid.”
“Come on, tell me.”
Tone took a deep breath. “I wanted to be with you, without the others around.”
That surprised Guy, as there has been several times when that could have happened. Instead of pointing it out, he nodded as they began walking. “Well, you’ve got it. So?”
“I wanted to tell you something about me, like I’m not as old as you and Mack.”
