Chapter 14
They arrived at the house soon after dark to find Pattie and Rob crouched in the shadows by the broken basement window waiting for them. “We didn’t want to go in without your permission.”
Dani shook her head. “Rob, this isn’t our home. It’s a place we crash. There’s no reason you shouldn’t have gone in.”
Rob peered through the window. “It’s real dark in there.”
“Now we get the truth.” Mack smiled before climbing into the basement. “Follow us. It’s safe.”
Once they were on the first floor, Mack asked the kids if they’d eaten. When they said they hadn’t, everyone handed them their leftovers from dinner. Shadow and Ghost watched avidly, obviously hoping they’d get some too. They did get fed, because as soon as the kids finished, Guy opened two of the cans he’d bought, spooning the dog and cat food into the empty take-out containers.
“Now what do we do?” Dani asked.
Tone turned to Guy. “You said you’re an artist. Do you have anything with you to draw on?”
