Stone in the shoe

When you were a kid, you lived with your grandmother in the small town of Silvertree, on the edge of a magical forest. Grandma is a witch, and she taught you how to use your magic to affect the natural world, too. “Magic is a part of you,” she always told you. “Learning how to use it means figuring out who you are.” Now you’re 19 and on your own. After years of living in the forest while you perfected your witchcraft, you’ve returned to take care of your grandmother’s house and crow-familiar while she’s gone. Figuring out who you are feels more important than ever - not to mention, figuring out what Silvertree is. A lot is just as you remembered: the friendly generous next-door neighbors with a kid just your age, the proud town council, the quaint little shops with quirky punny names, the gentle shadowy forest full of magic.

You're not sure if Robin spots your hesitation, but either way, he quickly shakes his head.

"It's okay, you don't have to decide right now. Just, you know…if you ever feel like it, my door's open." In spite of his nerves, he manages a smile. "Yeah. Cool. Anyway—see you around."

With that, you share a slightly awkward, but still friendly wave, and you make the short trip back to your house with your increasingly heavy shopping.

As soon as you step through the door, Arctus is there to greet you with an indignant meow—but after you make a quick job of unpacking all of her things, she seems much happier. She doesn't even seem to mind that everything you got her came from a pet store, and you have to wonder if she's never going to settle for anything less than royal treatment after this. The thing is, you're not sure you'll mind.

After getting her set up with anything and everything she could ever need—and after getting something to eat yourself and taking a little break from being on your feet—you realize that now would be as good a time as any to go join the party.

Since you're not sure whether to bring anything with you, you compromise by setting out with some fresh flowers (for Zoe) and some animal treats (for Maxie—or, at least, their animals). Then, fixing your eyes on the house over the road, you take a deep breath and head over there for the first time in ten years.
