One night suddenly Lucrecia went into labour. He cried out and screamed 'It hurts!'

His water broke and he lost his breath. Kole quickly gathered him and brought them to a shallower pool. There he lay upon a pile of seaweed as a cushion. He moaned quietly and breathed deeply.

Kole stroked his hair and soothed him as much as possible. He kept telling himself not to panic. That Lucrecia would be fine. For a few moments nothing happened. It seemed as if Lucrecia wasn't going to give birth anytime soon.

But then suddenly Lucrecia let out a cry and soon an egg made its appearance. Kole took note of the colour and size.

Then another followed. And then three more.

Finally the last egg popped free from his body and splashed into the water.

Anxious Kole looked at Lucrecia who was now breathing heavily, he appeared to have just passed out.

Kole carried Lucrecia over to the edge and lifted him up and back into the nest. He checked Lucrecia's lower abdomen and found only a slight bit of blood so he washed him up and layed him down comfortably before turning back to the eggs.

He reached inside and pulled them out carefully. There was 2 slightly different sizes and colours. But he knew what to look for. One was blue-green like a piece of kelp which was a merfolk egg, and the others was black and grey spotted which was his kind they were slightly larger than merfolk eggs.

Some time later Lucrecia regained consciousness and gasped when he saw his babies. Kole had put them into the nest he had made for them. He sat up smiled happily and kissed him on the cheek.

"You did well" Kole said softly.

He nodded shyly and blushed. Then he asked "How long do you think it will take to hatch?''

''Not long, about another week and they should start to break their shells'' Kole replied.

Lucrecia sighed and laid his head back down.

Some days later Lucrecia was sitting beside the pool watching the eggs, this was now what he spent his time doing. Before he wanted to leave the cave and now he would rather stay and watch them for any movement in the shell.

Suddenly something caught his eye, he turned around and watched intently. The egg nearest him had moved! A crack ran along the side of the shell. He leaned closer and peered closely.

There was a tiny gap between the top of the egg and the bottom. As he stared at it another small crack formed. Soon enough the whole thing cracked open right across the middle.

A small fin could be seen through the crack and he had never felt such excitement. His heart fluttered wildly as he waited patiently for the next stage.

The second egg began moving too. This one was smaller than the other two.

When the third egg started to move Lucrecia almost jumped out of his skin he could see two guppies in one of the eggs. He called Kole over.

Together they both observed the hatching process. The first the guppy came out and A little tail poked out and Lucrecia gasped with joy.

'That's my baby!' he thought to himself.

Another day passed by and soon the fourth egg hatched. Once again Lucrecia couldn't contain his happiness.

This time Kole joined him in observing the new arrival and he held onto his hand tightly. When finally the creature emerged Lucrecia clapped excitedly. By time they all hatched it was the evening and all 6 of the eggs had broken their shells, but to their suprise one of them contained a double yolk and so they had 7 children. none of them no bigger than a palmful each.

They named them after some of their favourite things; They also added a few names that meant 'great', 'strong' or 'good health'

One of the seven who was a merman had a dark blue colour for its tail, it was like a combination of both Lucrecia and Kole.

There was only one other merman and the other 5 were the same type of species as Kole.

Newborns didnt do very much most of the time they slept so in this time Kole and Lucrecia made up for the lack of nightly activities they didnt have while Lucrecia was recovering from birth

Further away in another pool there was a ripple of water caused by the two bodies colliding together

Lucreci moaned loudly and pressed against him. Their lips parted and then Kole kissed him once more.

Soon they separated and both breathed hard.

Lucrecia smiled and whispered "I love you."

Kole grinned and wrapped an arm around his waist pulling him closer. He kissed him passionately. ''I love you too''
