Chapter 44

Lamar’s brow darkened. “Bullshit.”

Stacy shrugged. He didn’t much care if Lamar believed him or not, but apparently his friend didn’t want to let the matter go. “I called what, an hour ago? You didn’t pick up.”

So the phone didring. Stacy couldn’t remember hearing it. “I was busy.” Silently he added, sitting hereDoing something, I’m sure.He hoped Lamar didn’t ask what because he didn’t know the answer to that. Glancing at the remote in Lamar’s hand, he asked, “Why’re you home?”

“What’s with you?”

Stacy grumbled, “Nothing.”

For a long moment Lamar studied him, waiting for more than that, but Stacy didn’t meet his gaze. “So how was school?”

Stacy shrugged a second time. “All right. I got Hard-ass Harding for math.” Lamar laughed, a quick, bright sound like a splash of blood on stainless steel. It hurt Stacy’s head to hear it but it meant that his friend had dropped his guard, if only a notch or two. “The fucker already hates me.”
