Rat retreat

As the veil of darkness lifted, the ratmen outside the camp came into sharper view. Their hunched forms swarmed and clustered thickly, blanketing the entire visible stretch of the street. Brandishing their long-handled battle knives, they vied with each other to pour into the battleground in front of the camp gate, their shrill "squeaking" cries filling the air.

The clash of steel and the ebb and flow of figures turned the area before the camp entrance into a veritable cauldron of carnage. The mercenaries, with their shields forming a solid barricade at the gate, met the ratmen's onslaught. From behind the shields, the long spears thrust out with deadly force, skewering the ratmen time and again. The ground was already littered with layer upon layer of corpses, the vast majority being those of the ratmen.
