Chapter 92

The next part of the lesson entailed going after a specific calf.

“Ya see that little white-faced heifer way in the back?” Rio yelled. “Try and cut her out.”

Mark nodded and rode his horse slowly and carefully through the herd of animals milling about at the back of the pen. He managed to get the little dogie Rio had indicated and two others separated from the main group. Then he tried to get the white-faced calf cut from the other two.

Working a small group was tougher than when there were more animals. Mark’s horse was a trained cutter and knew what to do better than the man on his back. Somehow figuring out which of the three Mark was after, the horse took matters into its own hooves and swerved sharply to cut the little maverick off before she could rejoin her pals. The motion unseated Mark, who fell with a thud on the sandy arena floor.
