I couldn't even blame them. They were right. I was their only son and I was barely there to even be with them. I couldn't say no, they're my parents—at least for the most part.

"Okay…" I said grudgingly. "How much yet?" "One month, Connor," Mom said. "That's it. No more. Just focus on your school and family. Understood?"

"Yes, Mom," I said, feeling the stress of a whirlpool inside my mind. You gotta remember. My chess club is being a spy mage. If I were to just leave, I would be watched or maybe even killed if I left, just so that no one knows.

I don't want to die. Not before my parents. What should I do? What could I do? I felt the weight of misfortune heave upon my head like a helmet that was fastened tightly.

"Don't give me that face," Mom said. "This is for the best. Now, go change."
