Chapter 45: Dash

I saw the spell coming way before Cass did, allowing me just enough time to move in front of her with a dispelling shield though I knew Edius' magic was more powerful than my own. I tensed and prepared for the worst.

The shield shattered but still managed to protect Cass. My shoulder took a glancing blow, ripping shirt and skin. Stunned, I sat up and leaned against one of the dozen or so pillars holding up the forty-foot-high ceiling. Cass knelt next to me, her face cringing as she studied the wound.

"Damn that didn't go the way I hoped it would." I reached for my shoulder but jerked back in pain.

"I can fix that!" she said and touched my shoulder with her wand. Nothing happened. She closed her eyes and chanted, touching my shoulder again.

"It's okay, Cass. It'll heal on its own." I smiled. "Can you get me a Band-Aid?"

"This is no time for jokes."

"He tainted the spell," Oliver said. "It's going to take a few minutes."
