Sun was in disbelief that all this time, the answer was right in front of him.
A rank 3 wizard was no joke. Although retired, she was not something he should be able to come in contact with let alone get employed to.
'Is this the legendary plot armour!? Damn!'
Feeling another water bullet brought him back shortly.
"Didn't expect you to be this surprised, there's a lot of us roaming about. Mewnyways, I need to know if you are really sure about this? There's no going back after you know." She asked seriously.
Sun found the wording odd but magic was right in front of him. Even with whatever downsides may come, he would have access to magic and by extension rune magic.
"Yes!" He spoke with determination.
Seeing this, his boss nodded and asked him to sit in a lotus position at the center of the magic circuit.
Sun was feeling nervous and from what he read, usually this was done over a few weeks to months. This really was a shortcut if it worked.
"Alright brat, didn't expect you to be the type but joining the army also ain't so bad at times. Here we go~Meow!." His Boss spoke some ominous words that were followed immediately by a massive wave of mana shooting through the magic circuit and enveloping him inside.
'Wait! Army?.. shit, but what is happening?'
Sun just felt the massive wave of mana but it didn't harm him in the slightest, he just felt the time slow down around him and he suddenly felt light.
The scene blurred and he was once again facing a perpetual darkness.
"Voidy~! I missed you!" Sun tried joking to lighten the mood of facing the vast unknown again.
He thought a floating gray screen with some sassy comment would appear but sadly not.
However, time passed and he felt nothing happening. He was just alone in the dark, floating in constant suspension.
"Hm? My great Void~ What do I do?" Sun spoke aloud as he really just wasn't figuring it out, there were no instructions or feeling of something happening. He can't do anything either but speak.
The moment he said those words though, a darkness so vast and expansive trembled ever so slightly.
While Sun was mulling over what to do, to his surprise a change occurred but not one he expected. His status was open for a while and he finally noticed the last part.

"I died? No wonder I'm kicking it in the void again. Shit, guess I broke the promise of not returning a little early. Hope the void ain't too mad." Sun mumbled as he was coming to terms with what happened.
However, it was odd, he still felt his whole body and he doesn't feel like a dead soul from the time he spent with the Void.
And knowing the Void as well, there would have been some blaring screen here to kick his ass for returning.
Sun couldn't understand this so-called death.
Eventually, as nothing was changing, Sun started trying to grab some of the voids. It was a futile attempt at trying to uncover something and after trying for a while, he stopped and just decided to mentally study his Runes and think of possible variations. He expected some magical shit and got none, and considering he can't have his books here, he just brain powered through the whole thing.
As he got into intense focus, he spent his hours just studying his runes. They were the only magical thing he knew, what else could he do?
Time seemed to slip by for Sun. Hours turned to days, days to weeks and weeks to months.
The first year suddenly passed by him, alone and with nothing to do. He couldn't understand this as being his result from attempting mana awakening. A perpetual darkness of his own and the Void not having replied to his presence here made it awkward and it specifically stated he was in Oblivion but Sun had no idea what that meant.
Oblivion could be a realm, a friend of the void that's also into darkness or a few hundred other possible scenarios.
Having seen it was fruitless, he gave up on figuring out his situation and just rolled with it like the first time around. He studied his Runes and he was on the cusp of reaching a breakthrough.
He didn't know why but he felt like he's absorbed the entirety of his accumulated knowledge so far on runes. He continued and mentally worked on his creations.
Sun didn't notice as he was so engrossed in it, that what he thought was his imagination was actual replicas that were in front of him. The realm he was in manifested his creation. Sun was oblivious as his passion for runes overtook him.
Drawing and erasing runes with just his mind and Oblivion manifesting the finished ones.
Sun, after a year of work without a single moment of rest which came with the perpetual darkness and no distractions allowed him to experience much more than one would in a year of normal breathing life.
Finally, after thousands of trials, the last runic inscription was manifested and fit itself like the missing piece of a puzzle on an insignia.
Suddenly, the insignia came to life and everything surrounding him was sucked into the insignia. It started glowing a fiery dark colour and took on the shape of a prism with six halos constantly turning on it as the point.
Seeing this sudden shift, Sun was just in awe at what was happening. Such magical scenes were rare and few to come by in his life so far but he felt a strong burst of ambition growing within as he felt this magical runic structure come to life.
Suddenly the inscription he created shined an even darker light and Sun felt as though something was searing him for a brief moment.
Suddenly he felt a tremendous burst of energy fill him up as though a whale trying to worm its way into his body. The sudden surge peaked and nearly exploded before calming down and circling thoroughly through his internal circuits.
Sun feeling the sudden change, was in shock and just as the feeling came, the feeling disappeared as though something sucked all of it away.
"HWEAAHH - What!-?" Sun gasped for air as his hand was trying to clench at something as he awoke.
Seeing his surroundings returning to an oh-so-familiar workshop, Sun suddenly turned around to see his Cat Boss yawning and resting on a small velvet sofa.
"Ah, you're back! Good job Meow!" His boss purred as she stretched awake.
