Wren's face instantly hardened with the mask he reserved for his father.
"I don't care what he has to say." His voice simmered with disdain. "He took you from me, just like I knew he would. I don't know why he hasn't stolen my heart from you yet…what new game he's playing…but I won't give him a chance to make a move."
Rowan shook his head. He reached for Wren's hand and squeezed his fingers, knowing the next part would be difficult for him to hear.
"He didn't take me from you. I went with him willingly. He just brought me here after I took the first step."
Wren blinked in shock, and sure enough, the mask slipped to reveal the hurt that lay beneath it. His fingers tensed in Rowan's grip.
"Why would you do that? It's bad enough that Loma has let him in, but you, too? He can't be trusted, Rowan. He simply wants to use you to get back at me somehow."
"I really don't believe that's the case…not this time."
