Chapter 85

There was very much of me being me, my interests, photography, flowers, nature, walks. No worries about gender or snobby neighbors. There was one incident that stands out painfully, which I have not repeated. That was little Noah, who took one look at me and ran to me with his arms open, as if he knew me and loved me, and, I didn’t dare pick him up. His mother was right behind him, and I was a man, a stranger. I didn’t want any trouble on my own part, and I as a parent myself didn’t think it was healthy for him to be allowed to run up to strange men and ask to be picked up. It broke my heart. (This past summer, a visiting three-year-old loved me on sight, for some reason, and when she ran to me, I did pick her up. It was that or get knocked over. LOL. Yes, her mother was right there, too. I didn’t care. Maybe I’m just more confident, in a strange way.)
