Some Fine Day

This is the story of how Emery Walters became whom he was supposed to be.<br><br>I knew I was male at an early age, something that was a societal no-no in the 1950s and still is in parts of the country today. Burying my male identity, I strove to be the best woman possible. But after raising my four wonderful children from two debilitating marriages, I found myself alone and nearly penniless. That was when Emery asserted his identity.<br><br>Life became better with the shift from female to male, a third marriage, and a wife who, herself, transitioned from male to female.

Chapter 40

My biggest surprise in rereading just this much, is that I was not Robyn’s first choice of date for the Sadie Hawkins dance (that’s the one where the girls invite the boys). I was looking for the interaction between Robyn and me, how we fell in love online and in the playing and then in real life. I guess you have to go through puberty to get to adulthood, and lord knows most of us in the transgender community had never really found our real, adult, selves. On the plus side, going through a belated puberty makes you look a lot younger than you really are; whether you are ‘passing’ well or not, at first, at least you don’t look old. And for my generation of coming to our truths later in life, that mattered. Maybe not at all to some of us, I can’t speak for everyone, especially since FTM’s are supposedly fewer in number than MTFs, and certainly not as represented in the media.
