The Night When The Fate Start To Shift

Year of 715, Aira Empire

It is burned to the ground, the hell that I live in has turned into ash.

It is a peaceful night at the orhpanage. The children are sleeping, mothers are drinking their tea with a hushed conversation. The corridor is dark and I am walking tiptoed avoiding the moon light that slips throught the windows with two other children, Rose and Ben.

Having to take care of Ben since he is 3 years old and Rose since 7, they are like siblings to me, so I need to take them out from this place too.

We planned run away months before and tonight is the night. Percival, the other child has been out first, clearing our way, ensuring mothers wouldn't find us out. The image of our failure horrified me, as the daily training and abuse of what they said awakening isn't hell enough for us.

"Madelaine, my feet wont move!."-said Ben with trembling voice.

"Move it, don't you know we are in dangereous situation!"-Rose start to get annoyed.

"Shhh, it's okay I will carry you out so close your eyes if you are afraid"-I said while trying to console my self too.

Carrying Ben made us move slower, but something made me uneasy even more.

There is something, someone in this big mansion, following us but strangely doing nothing, only see our every movement.

I could care less of it as what's important to me is reaching the back door in the kitchen that connect the mansion to the woods in the backyard of the orphanage. My legs start to give out on me, but I could see the door from the stair.

"When I open the door, we should run as fast as we can and I'm sorry Ben but could you try to run this time?." -said with a forced smile, try to reassure them. They just noded and I take it as a yes.

Finally we are reaching the kitchen. Putting down ben, sweating bullets start to drop on the floor. I turn the door knob while looking at both of them, giving the signal.

"Run!!."

We run as fast as we could, Rose is the first one to run followed by Ben while I tried to look around from the back.

This is weird, something is wrong.

I tried to shift my thought and looking around for a sign that I promised with Percival.

"That's the sign!"-I said to them, and we run faster than before.

The closer we got to the sign, but I couldn't see Percival anywhere.Then a hot wind blew, like trying to push us back to the mansion.

I know who it is.

"Pery!"

Looking back to the mansion and the sound of explosion stop us from our run.

A blue flame burn the ophanage, and I could hear the screams of the children.

It's Percival doing.

"You two hide here, don't go anywhere."

"Where are you going Madelaine, it's dangerous!"-Rose said with nervous look.

"I won't be long, please take care of Ben for a while Rose."

I run back toward the mansion, the closer I got the clearer the sound of the children. Their scream, their cry. I tried to run with all my remaining strength.

Thud.

One of my feet got stuck in the trap that mothers place to warn children who tried to run away. My feet start to bleed but the scream just kept getting louder, felt like I could feel their pain. I don't have time, I need to see what happened, while desperately try to undo the trap.

Percival, I need to find Percival.

"Pery!"

"Where are you!".

As I'm getting closer, the heat just become unbearable.I could see someone in the front yard of the mansion, in fact a lot of people. 

How could someone do this to the children of orphanage.

Try to wipe out my tears, heading to the front yard that is blocked by the flames I could see Percival.

"Elaine"-said Percival while pointing a gun at me.

"What happened,what are you doing!" I said furiously.

Click.The gun is fired.

"Madelaine!"-I could hear Ben voice from behind.

"Waaaahhhhh"-Rose screaming, but I don't feel any pain.

I look back, and see Rose body full of blood and Ben lying, breathlessly.

What is really happening right now.

My mind is blank, I hold Ben lifeless body.Somehow it is quiet in a sudden, and all I could see is Rose crying.

"This is for your awakening, Elaine"-said Percival with cold eyes, no hint of guilt reflected in his eyes.

"Are you crazy, what awakening!"

"This is needed, Ben sacrifice is needed"-now he is pointing his gun at Rose.

Realize his intention, I tried to cover Rose's body with mine.

"Tsk!"-Percival look upset.

"Percival this is enough, the empire armies are here"- a man dressed like a foreign soldier approach him from behind.

"Alright"-said Percival while pointing the gun down.

"See you later Elaine"

"Later what? you are dead to me once you stepped out your feet out of this place!"-I scream and suddenly the cold wind start to freeze my surounding, even put out some of the fire that Percival made.The wind blow out the smoke from the building and I could see Percival clearly now behind the ruins.

"Good"-he smiled while looking at the ring in his hand, and dissapear with the rest of the troops.

I stared blankly at the place where Percival stood.The scene look serene unlike before, like a plain of snow, all I could see is white,no any other sound except Rose's crying.

Sound of footsteps is heard from afar. They are yelling but I could not comprehend what they are saying. Maybe something about evacuation, or maybe about us. I don't know. I could feel my hands are wet from blood.The ground beneath me is a pool of blood.

"I'm sorry,I am late"-a hoarse voice of man come from behind.

"This is disaster, Johnathan"-a woman replied from his side.

"Let us got to somewhere warm and safe first"-while trying to reach us.

"Don't touch me!"-suddenly a sharp ice like wall arise from the ground.

"Marina this is..!"

"I know, this is so messed up more that I imagined",she replied to the man.

"Child, let us go somewhere safe and get your friend his last peaceful resting place"-she said to me while looking into my eyes tenderly.

I tried to stand up but I have no strength left in my body, it's all happened so suddenly I don't know is this even reality. Percival who I trust most, how could he pointed a gun at us, is he really Perry that I know for 5 years?.

The man called Johnathan caried Ben lifeless body, and I hold Rose's hand who is still crying.

That night I knew something in me changed, but one thing for sure is I want to forget all of the tragedy that happen on that white night.
