Chapter 24
Once I was up and reasonably alert, I decided to spend the rest of the week on the night shift, so to speak. I went to the bars late in the evening and stopped by my client’s branch operation a couple of times during each night. And I got lucky a couple of times, both in the bars and in my irregular surveillance. Friday night was an especially late night, and I requested a late checkout before I retired in the pre-dawn hours.
I’d assured the night clerk that I would vacate the room by three, and managed to do so—barely. Fortified with enough coffee to keep me from going to sleep at the wheel, I headed up the interstate. The minute I got home, I went upstairs, crashed without bothering to check my messages or anything, and slept straight through until early Sunday morning.
