Chapter 11

“Whoa, Jethro,” I said. “Take it easy.”

“Sorry, I’m just glad to see you. I’ve had a rotten day.”

I locked the door, took him by the hand, led him to the sofa, and said, “Okay, Jethro, sit down and tell me all about it.”

It took him a while to get the story out in bits and pieces, and when he was finished, he even shed a few tears. He’d actually confronted Donny, and his now former friend had admitted to talking to people.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “Maybe I shouldn’t have told you.”

“No!” he said, with considerable vehemence. “I’m glad you did, but it isn’t easy knowing that someone you trusted betrayed you. And in a small town like Starke, it’s just a matter of time before it becomes common knowledge.”

“No, it isn’t easy at all. Let me ask you something—have you learned anything from the experience?”

“Oh, yeah. I’ve learned to be very careful when it comes to trusting anybody—especially about sexual matters.”
