Helen arched an eyebrow but ignored both the comment and kiss other than to say, “I think the meds are kicking in.”
“Big time,” Paul admitted, looking chastened.
“Then you should get back to bed. As for you, Mark,” she said, standing, “I’ll wait for your call.”
“I’ll make up my mind soon, I promise.”
“I suspect when you think about it, you’ll see that my idea is the only one that works.” She patted his shoulder before heading to the door. As she opened it, she turned back to wink at him. “By the way, if you do decide on surgery, you’ll be able to be with Paul when he’s not deep undercover.”
Mark blew out a long breath as the door closed behind her. “And that might be the most compelling argument of all.” 21
Five months later
The desk clerk finished filling out the needed information, gave back Mark’s credit card, and said, “Thank you for staying with us, Mr Connley. Enjoy your visit.”
