Shut-In Of The 'Dead'

Bronze WINNER of WPC#322: Male Lead: Zombie Invasion Takemi Kazuichi might very well be the luckiest and unluckiest person in the world. He was an orphan, and he was severely bullied in school. Because of that, he became a hikikomori, a shut-in. When he turned sixteen, he was adopted by a rich couple who loved him as if he was their own son. Unfortunately, they died in a plane crash, and Kazuichi never overcame his bad habits of being a shut-in, largely because of his preying relatives. Fast forward to four years later, Takemi Kazuichi still stayed in the house left by his late parents. He never bothered going to work or going out to socialize with people. For the lack of a better term, he was a rich hikikomori. He never even bothered to check the news or log in on any social media. All he did was live his life in solitude, devoid of any human interaction. One day, as he came out of the shower, he heard a strange thumping sound by the doorway. "That's weird, I didn't order any delivery today." He told himself before absent-mindedly opening the door. And what stared back didn't resemble a human at all. It was a zombie— or so that's what the first thing that came into Kazuichi's mind. Unbeknownst to him, the world had drastically changed, and he was the last one to know.

Airport Escapee

A few minutes prior,

"I have to... get... away... " A blond-haired lady muttered to herself as she struggled to push her body forward. It should have been a normal day of vacation— that time of the year wherein she could spend her days with the family she rarely meets.

Kamigawa Arisu, nineteen years old, had met the crossroads of her life as an unknown epidemic struck the entire world.

An unknown plague.

An epidemic.

It came with many names, but the only thing that struck Kamigawa Arisu's mind was that one word— a word that should have only existed in novels and movies. It was a word that everyone dreaded to think about due to its lasting consequences and drastic changes in the systematic ways of the world. It was a word that people enjoyed yet they never wanted it to befall the world.

Zombies.

Kamigawa Arisu continued to move forward despite the blood loss and injuries she suffered. Her headache pounded on her like a sledgehammer, but she kept on, thinking that if she could at least get away from the densely populated area of the cities... then she'd have a chance at living... or at least that's what she hoped for.

She was already bitten. Her family, who was supposed to welcome her as soon as she landed at the airport, was all over her in an instant, biting her everywhere they possibly could. They became feral, and so did everyone else in the airport where they landed. She barely escaped their burrowing clutches, but not without suffering an injury. Her severed arm hurt, and all the bite marks and wounds that scarred her body breathed painfully as if they were alive.

"I have to... get... away... "

"I have to... get away." She repeatedly told herself. Even after she escaped the hellish halls of the airport, she still pressed forward.

For hours, she dragged herself and walked through the streets of the city. The pain that she felt continued to linger, torturing her endlessly. But compared to the pain of losing her entire family, the pain she felt on the surfaces of her skin was nothing. Snot and tears streamed down her face while she continued walking. She had hoped that her consciousness would slowly fade away, and then completely leave her as she aimlessly wandered the streets of the city as an undead.

"Sniff~ I'm going to become a zombie. But... I don't want to... I don't want to die." Her voice escaped her mouth like a dying groan. She couldn't talk anymore. It was evident that the virus had rooted itself in her brain, slowly taking control of her until eventually, she loses herself completely. 'That's how it is when it comes to becoming a zombie, right? I... why did I have to die?' She asked herself the underlying yet very obvious question.

Thankfully, even though she walked right in front of a crowd of zombies, they didn't even bother looking in her direction. They could tell that she was already bitten and the virus already streamed through her blood. Why would they bother to bite her? Arisu sighed in relief. At the very least... she'd have a peaceful walk through the cities despite the excruciating pain she was in.

Her suffering somewhat got alleviated when the pain slightly subsided, giving her a breather while she continued her aimless stroll. "I... where am I going?" She asked herself, wondering why she still hasn't lost her consciousness.

An hour or so had already passed, and yet her consciousness was still intact. She did have the occasional urge to bite someone from time to time, but her mental strength was capable of suppressing that urge. "I... I'm so hungry..." Arisu muttered to herself but only a groan escaped her mouth. Her voice didn't sound well anymore, instead, it sounded like the voice of death, escaping from the grave akin to a horror movie scene.

From afar, amidst the pained groans of the zombies that surrounded her, she heard what seemed like the soft pitter-patter of rain. Not only that, she could smell the delicious fragrance of meat, which prompted her to walk in the general direction of the smell. She began to salivate, and her pace quickened. Temporarily, the pain receptors in her head were deactivated and she didn't feel the pain while she dragged herself around.

"That smelled good!" She said to herself, not noticing the towering fence which she scaled in an instant. Her breathing got even more ragged, not because she was exhausted, but due to her being blinded by her unsatiated hunger.

A clearing that separated the tall steel-framed fence from the huge mansion was immediately cleared with her quick feet, and before she knew it, she was standing in front of the doorway. "Let me in!" She called out from outside while rapidly knocking with her left hand. Her right hand dangled from her forearm due to being severed, but right now she didn't feel a sliver of pain so she ignored its hideous appearance.

"Let me in! She repeated!"

In her mind, she was speaking coherently while acting like a normal human. But in reality, she acted purely like her undead counterpart, groaning and shrieking in an indistinctive manner while weakling knocking on a door (thus the thumping sound that Kazuichi heard while he was showering).

Creak!

Since Arisu was leaning too forwardly on the door, she lost her balance the moment it opened, causing her to impulsively fall forward on top of Kazuichi. "I'm sorry, my body's acting a little bit janky... I can't control it. Would you mind pushing me to the side please?" Arisu called out, but just as mentioned before, all that escaped her mouth were unrecognizable sounds akin to deathly groans.

"WAGGHHH!!!" An ear-piercing scream escaped Kazuichi's mouth as his eyes locked on to the blue pools of irises that Arisu possessed. He then fainted soon afterward, leaving the mansion all for Arisu herself.

"Hey? What's wrong? Are you all right? You... you look... tasty..." Arisu muttered to herself (she still spoke incoherently) as her mouth slowly approached Kazuichi's skin.

Something weird clicked in Arisu's mind and the longer she stared at Kazuichi, the more delicious he looked. It was some sort of primal instinct that directed her to take a bite— just one bite— of Kazuichi's flesh. Her mind urged her, forcing the notion that Kazuichi is the tastiest in the world.

Just one bite.

Just one BITE!

JUST ONE BITE!

Her inner self screamed at her, forcing her to bring down her mouth on Kazuichi's shoulder. The voice in her head was louder now, like a loudspeaker on full blast pressed against her ears. She closed her eyes to rein in the voice, and somehow, her urge lessened.

Before she could bury her teeth on Kazuichi's lump shoulders, she mustered her remaining strength and stood up. The urge subsided. It was still there, but it didn't scream at her anymore. She sighed in relief. The smell of uncooked beef once again wafted in the air. It was a bit unappetizing, but she went for the uncooked beef instead of eating a portion of Kazuichi's flesh. She managed to control herself despite that uncontrollable urge to sink her teeth into him.

Double-checking, the meat was actually smoked and not raw, much to Arisu's relief. She immediately gorged herself with the meat. Somehow, her hunger abated, and she found the time to clean up after her own mess. "Who would've thought I'd invite myself in someone's place... much less a guy?!" She muttered to herself, her face reddening as she stole a glance towards the unconscious Kazuichi. She felt sorry for the guy since her hideous appearance made him faint.

Once she was done washing her hands and feet, she went towards Kazuichi and dragged him onto the sofa. She then borrowed a towel and wrapped her forearm with it in hopes that it would reconnect her severed limb. She didn't count on the notion though since her severed limb was pretty much already dead after losing that much blood. Still, the bites she suffered didn't hurt that much anymore, and she opted to take a shower so she'd at least be presentable to her host, Takemi Kazuichi.

And the rest was pretty much history, Kazuichi stumbled upon her in the shower. Then he got slapped in return and labeled as a pervert.

Ah yes, the life of a hikikomori :)
