Chapter 43: The Alpha by Firelight

The view and sunset from the top of the mountain had been breathtaking. But Desiree was near collapse by the time they reached it. The only thing she was able to focus on was the location of the temple which was still a half day's walk down the mountain and hopefully to an island pack that would help them cross over to the central island.

“If all goes well, we’ll get there early in the evening,” Declan explained. “Our ships should still be at port. We will locate them and rendezvous with the remaining crew before hiking to the temple.”

Declan and Desiree broke off from the others after they established a campsite for the night. They set up a campfire more for light than warmth as it was much warmer on this island than it had been on Deadswamp Island. She lay close to him looking up at the sky with the moon completely in shadow.

Desiree didn’t want to think about what would happen tomorrow night if they didn’t get to her sister in time.
