Chapter 6: A Mere Human

" Yes. Here." Eliza took out a white chocolate candy. It was her favorite and she had developed the habit of having one or two in her pockets.

" Thanks... " That woman replied. Then she eats the chocolate. After a minute, she felt better and started giving instructions.

" We don't have the medical instruments so we can't do much. Cough... All we can do is take him out of here first and go into an open space with fresh air. Open his clothes and let him breathe fresh air. He needs immediate medical attention so try to call for an ambulance."

" Got it."

Eliza got up and picked him up on her back. He was heavy but she was not too weak. She carried him to the stairs and looked back. Her eyes fell on the brave women sitting all wounded on the chair. She was obviously scared to be left alone in this horror basement with the Killer still on the floor.

However, it seems like the Hippocratic oath doctors take ain't just some words. There are people in this world who would sacrifice it all for humanity. They are surely respected and great individuals. That woman left quite an impression on someone like Eliza.

Eliza went out. As she thought, her team was lost searching for her. But they might've found her as they were close.

" Eliza! Where were you?! Who is that?"

They quickly came forward when they saw her carrying someone. The medical team rushed up to treat him.

Eliza then gave them a quick summary of the patient's condition.

"You're bleeding!?" Her partner at Missions and Sergeant Detective Lucas Martin exclaimed.

" Yeah, but we need to rescue the other victims first. They are not in good shape. Follow me with the medics. I'll show the way."

Lucas was worried but their job doesn't give them time to do that. They all rushed behind Eliza and finally found the hidden passage. They quickly followed her underground and found the victims. The detectives quickly picked up the unconscious killer while the medics carried the victims out.

After capturing the killer, Eliza followed the medics and gave them a brief update on the situation. She told them how they were tortured and with what. They were all taken in the ambulance.

As they were short on one ambulance, Lucas told Eliza to go with any victim as she also needed to be treated.

Then somehow, Eliza ended up with that woman in the ambulance. She didn't even know her name yet but had so many encounters together.

She sat with a poker pale face as the medics gave her rough emergency treatment. They reached the hospital and were taken inside on a stretcher.

As Eliza was being carried, she was reminded of a similar situation. Her pain was nothing compared to that. She quickly shook those thoughts out of her mind and closed her eyes. She might not feel many emotions but she could feel pain.

They injected anaesthesia into her and bandaged her wounds. It was a deep wound but didn't need stitches. They also treated her other wound. It was blueish black as she was hit by an iron rod. It was very painful and swelled from the inside.

Because of the effects of the anaesthesia, Eliza fell asleep. However, she woke up in 2 hours. Her senior, Detective Martin was standing there. Seeing her waking up, he asked concernedly.

" How are you? Should I call the doctor?"

" Cough... No. I am fine. How are... The other victims?" Eliza's voice came out a little hoarse.

" They are all fine. They will suffer from some side effects but they are no longer in a life-threatening situation." He said as he filled a cup of water for her.

" What about the Killer?" She took the cup and drank.

" He's captured. He has killed a total of four people and has charges of attempted murder for the present victims. Including all the charges, the prosecutor will probably ask for the death penalty."

" I see."

"Forget about this all, how are you? What happened?"

" I was following him and reached the abandoned building. However, I couldn't find him anywhere.

So I searched inside that room and then I thought that there could be a basement room underfloor. So I burned a paper and the smoke got sucked underground then I found the gate. I used my pistol and shot the lock.

After getting in he attacked me and I fought back. He used a knife and a metal rod. Then I used my knife and defeated him. I cuffed him and rescued the victims.

Among them, the female was conscious. She told me to treat the teenage boy first as he was apparently poisoned. Then I brought him out and met you guys. You know the rest then."

" Eliza even if you are about to be promoted to sergeant, it doesn't mean you can approach such situations alone. I was your superior and that's why I haven't reported you yet. You were lucky to not die. Don't try to act cool and strong. You are but a mere human. This is a warning."

No one said anything as the atmosphere got heavy. Eliza has been this way since the start. She was very different from others. No one could read her and other colleagues especially newbies were always scared of her. Lucas sighed and said.

" That woman you rescued, she turned out to be the daughter of the director of the first hospital. Moreover, she is a very renowned psychologist in this field. There has been chaos in search for her. Her family may approach you to show their gratitude."

" I see." It didn't matter to Eliza. She just did her job.

" Okay. Have a good rest. You'll have to stay for 2 days. Call your family or anyone. I'll also come to visit after work."

" Okay."
