With her back against the cold brick wall of the alleyway, she tightened her grip on her gun, her eyes darting from one shadowy figure to the next.

"Drop your weapon, Detective," one of the thugs growled, his voice laced with menace. "This doesn't have to end in bloodshed."

But Elena knew better than to trust the words of a hired gun. She had faced down danger countless times before, and she would not be intimidated now.

"Stand down," she commanded, her voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "You're under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, and murder. Surrender peacefully, and I promise you'll get a fair trial."
