Shade on a Sunny Day

A man raised by traitors that still has strong convictions. A what do you do when you have a dangerous power and no power with those around you. There is blood, slavers, and other topics that might not be for everyone. This is a prequel book to another book I have written but never shared. Sorry if I skip over anything, it should stand alone though.

Sometimes planning can wait

"Yes, One Twelve, or One hundred and twelve." The slaves' names had become their numbers, which was nice for me I could read, I wasn't sure how anyone else kept them straight, but I was pretty sure over half the wives could read. "The other two in the room aren't that old, so what did you do?"

"Of course not, the older women are useful. If we can trust them some in keeping us out of the problem we had with Bella. Which if they know what will happen if the wives start dying in childbirth and we think they knew what we needed to save them, well they will have a good reason to be truthful when they share. I think they have a good understanding, we will see. No those two are the youngest in the group who were stupid enough to brag to me about how they were involved. They also attacked me while I was talking to 112. Foolishness, Travis was still between me and them and they were lucky he didn't break their necks pinning them like that. They couldn't believe a man would dare touch them without their permission. So I asked Travis to just give us those two, since clearly they would have to be tied up until their collar's got half set. I also told him the best way to tie them up for me."

"You made them pay for that behavior while I slept correct?"

"You know I tried but they are still tied up." Isa laughed lightly.

"Is that it for what I need to know about the slaves?"

"Oh, Travis said that as the other 5 return they would be brought up for you. He knows how you love people who disobey our lord. Your brothers also decided to teach the women to seriously think before they disobey an order given by one of them, I think they know how all of them were involved in what happened. 112 wasn't the only half starved one but the rest wouldn't talk until the brothers got them away from the women of whom they were afraid."

"They being a little nicer to them?"

"Of course, none of your pack are truly monsters, or if they are they at least know you would correct them when you woke up. If their own wives weren't able to teach them better sooner."

"I would like to think I am a better judge of character than that."

"One cannot always choose family."

I nodded and hugged her, "So tell me about my girl." I felt 112's confusion again but she didn't say anything.

"She is as pale as you, with grey eyes, but she is smart and she watches everything. She is quiet for a baby, granted she is only three days old. They don't do much that young."

"Have you and Bella thought of a name?"

"I liked Snow, Bella likes Crystal, or Diamond. We were waiting until we could talk with you though."

I smiled, "Thank you, it does mean a lot to me." Isa just nodded like that is what she expected. "Do you think they are up yet? I would like to see her."

"You know better than I do, we don't all have those sensitive ears."

"I am careful not to hear, or feel what is going on in your room." 112 leaned back in the chair and tilted her head in surprise just a bit. I only felt amusement from Isa.

"We know, it is part of what we like about you, Mir."

"How do you know that?"

Isa distracted me by rolling over to straddle my hips letting her robe open as she leaned in to get her face right in front of mine. Well I couldn't let her be that close without kissing her. So she couldn't continue until she got her breath back from that, "You are more aware of me and Bella than you are anyonelese in the house, correct?"

I nodded once watching as Isa sat on her heels not putting any weight on my legs. "Well, it seems the more we are with you the more we are aware of you as well, not nearly what you can do but it is not nothing. Well, that is why we knew you don't listen to our room. We are aware of when you are listening. It took a few months to be sure though, but there was one night where we were pretty sure that if you had been listening you would have felt the need to talk to us." Her smile was just a bit on the evil side.

"Just because I don't listen doesn't mean the messenger doesn't." I let my hand move slowly up Isa's leg.

"It wasn't anything that he would have found strange, just you. We do try to keep the foolishness to a minimum." Isa put her arms up on my shoulders clasping her hands behind my head. I was sitting with a pillow behind my back so she had room. "You are just a good man in a bad world, but you distracted me, what I was going to say is that we know you don't listen but we would be ok with you checking on us when you want something, like knowing if your daughter is awake."

"Hum, I will think about it. Have you and Bella picked out a nursery and playroom for the kids?"

Isa shook her head at me and leaned down to kiss me again, I knew the head shake was because I was me and not an answer to my question. When she sat back this time her hands were playing with my chest. "We talked with the other wives and have worked out a schooling room, play areas, who is in charge when. On this floor Bella and I worked out when kids will move from our room to their own room. That we sleep separate from you most of the time works out nice for babies staying with us and us coming to you when we want something else. We worked out how to keep the kids away from your dungeon and the other wives and gotten your brothers to keep sex to their own rooms as well. So I don't think there will be many problems with the children in the branch house learning things they should not, too early."

"That is good. You keep teasing me and I am going to take you seriously."

"I am not glass, and your magic fixed the damage, maybe I do want you to poke fun." I completely lost track of what I was thinking about after that. I could almost believe Isa liked 112 watching.
