Chapter 6

Kovan rolled his eyes. “No. He’d heard me and the other guy talking. He wished me luck with my kids, and my other job, and he apologized. Then he went to take off. He didn’t even make a move on the other guy until he pulled his blaster.”

Dryath pursed his lips. “And that’s when he shot him.”

“Yeah. Self-defense.”

Dryath nodded. Technically, a slave had no right to self-defense. Neither did an alien against a human. Dryath couldn’t exactly fault him for it, though. He’d have done the same thing.

Genthry’s odd gentleness toward Kovan seemed out of character, when compared with his file. If Dryath was going to find the guy, he had to go deeper.2

Genthry pulled his cloak closer. Half of getting away with these things—with pretty much anything—was attitude. He had no business being out here, in public, with his magenta skin. Every Ayak on Kindara was in danger as long as he remained here, and showing his face was arrogant in the extreme. None of that mattered.
