The phone rang far too early. My head felt heavy, and I reached for it on autopilot, squinting at the caller ID. Of course, it was Nicole. I barely checked the time before answering.

"What," I muttered, voice scratchy with sleep. "It's too early for this."

Nicole's voice was far too chipper. "Good morning to you too, sunshine! We've got a bit of a situation." Her words dripped with forced sweetness, which meant she needed something and would try to be persuasive.

"What kind of situation?" I rubbed my eyes, bracing myself for whatever ridiculous task she was going to throw my way.

"Someone needs to pick up Layla and bring her to the studio today," she said, as if this were the most obvious thing in the world.

I felt my brow twitch. "Nicole. Why me? Can't Maya do it? She's her friend and manager, isn't she?"
