Scribbles Of My Life

Dinma, a beautiful girl in her 30s, who had been through it in her last relationship and was still going through it but only surviving by focusing on the love from her family. Cheta had only been in the country for a few months and it was because he had taken over his family business after the death of his father. Dinma had just finished buying some things at the cloth market and was going home when Cheta got into the same bus with her after his car had broken down and like every romantic story, it was love at first sight. From that day, they spent everyday together but is that going to be enough?

The Sister!

The next morning, we checked out of the resort and we were driving down Epe road, back home, there was music playing on the stereo in Cheta's car and we were singing along. We stopped by a breakfast place to get breakfast, during breakfast, Cheta looked at me and said, "Can we go and see your mum next week, I want to meet your family."

"Meet my family? Is it not too soon for that?", I asked him.

"Breath baby, I don't mean the traditional introduction, I'm talking about your mum and siblings knowing about me", he answered, laughing.

"But I have only met your mum",

"You are meeting my sister this weekend, remember?"

"It's so hard to win with you, fine we can go and see my mum, but not next week, baby.", I said, laughing.

He nodded and we continued with our breakfast.

After breakfast, Cheta took me back home, but that was not before he tried to persuade me to stay a few more days at his house, Cheta always wanted an excuse to have me over at his house but I felt like I was spending too much time with him if that means anything, so I tried to come up with an excuse to not go home with him.

"I need to go home and work baby, I have a work deadline.", I said when he suggested, we go to his house instead of mine.

"You can bring work over to the house.", he answered.

"I can bring work over to your house but I won't be able to work and you know that.", I said, smiling.

"You are right, fine you can go and work but I'm coming to see you every day.".

I smiled and nodded in agreement.

But the next day I was in Cheta's house, forgive me but I'm crazy about this man and I can't go a day without him. That evening at his house while we were working, Cheta asked me what my goal for the year was and where I saw myself in the next 3 years,

I looked at him and said, "One of my goals for the year is...mmh.. to produce my first film for Netflix...then, I see myself, married with a kid or pregnant, and doing what I love most.. yeah..",

"I like that, I can help you meet your goal if you want", he answered.

"Oh! I'll love that...I'm looking for investors.",

"Mmmh, I'll want to see your proposal through. Can you send it to me?", he asked me.

"Yes, I'll send it to you, thank you.", I said, nodding my head.

"Yeah babe, anything for you.".

The rest of the days went by as normal, I continued with work and Cheta did the same thing but we continued spending every evening together and we talked too. On Thursday evening, Cheta and I were strolling in his estate,

"You remember we are still going to spend the weekend with my mum and my sister?", he asked me,

"Yes, I remember. I have even packed my bags", I answered, turning to face him, still walking.

"Okay, I'll pick you up tomorrow evening, " he said, touching my hair.

"You know what my sister said yesterday?", I turned back and continued walking next to him.

"What did she say?", he looked at me, curious,

"She said I should move in with you because they hardly see me at home", I said, laughing,

"I think she has a good point, you should move in with me.", he said with a serious face.

"Are you serious?", I asked him,

"I'm serious, we have been dating for 4 months, and living together wouldn't be a bad idea", he replied,

"You have to be joking, we are in Nigeria Cheta and we are very traditional here. People don't move in with their partners except they were married".

"Okay, I just thought it would be a good idea", he said. We continued our walk in the estate.

Cheta picked me up from my house at 5.00 pm because dinner was 7.00 pm and we didn't want to miss dinner with his mum and sister. We got on the road and joined the traffic to Ikoyi, we got to the house at about 6.30 pm and when we walked into the house, Cheta's mum was just walking down into the living room, she screamed in excitement when she saw me and hugged me, then she went on about how much she had missed me. Cheta's mum is such a sweet woman, I must say, it's the way she would always make me feel comfortable anytime I visited.

"I haven't seen you in almost 2 months, how are you?", she asked me,

"I'm fine, I'm sorry I haven't seen you in so long, I've just been a little busy.", I answered, smiling.

"It's fine, you are here now," she said before turning to Cheta, and opening her arms,

"Good evening mum. I was thinking you wouldn't notice me", he hugged her, while saying,

"You are trying to be funny I see". she said, laughing.

Cheta's sister, Nneoma, called out to him from the top of the stairs, "Chetachukwu! You are late for dinner.",

Cheta looked up at his sister and laughed, "Hello to you sister", she walked down the stairs and joined us in the living room. She hugged her brother and then turned to me and said, "You are Nma, you are very beautiful just like in your picture",

"Thank you, you are beautiful too", I answered, smiling.

Then she opened her arms, "We are huggers in this family, so I'm going to hug you", she said, smiling.

"Yes, so I have been told", I said, laughing.

Then we hugged ourselves.

While we were still talking, the house chef walked into the living to tell us that dinner was served, so we moved over to the dining to have dinner. It was rice and chicken for dinner with salad and a fruit spread, I don't know if I counted correctly but I think there were 6 bottles of wine and jugs of fruit juices.

"You know, I'm very curious, how did you two meet?", Nneoma asked me,

"We met on a bus", I answered,

She looked up shocked and curious at the same time like she wanted to know more but she was in disbelief,

"Please I want to know more. How did that happen?", she asked me again,

"I was on my way back from the market and about 5 minutes after I sat down, your brother showed up and joined the bus", I answered.

"I don't believe you. Cheta in a public bus", she said, chuckling,

"Nneoma, can you stop with the questions, we are at the dinner table. Mum, help me out please", Cheta said,

"Nneoma allow Dinma to eat her dinner, you can continue with the questions after dinner", Cheta's mum said. And the questions stopped, but there was still a friendly banter and conversation across the dinner table.

After dinner we sat in the living room, drinking wine and talking. Nneoma had not given up on finding out how we met, so she turned to Cheta.

"What were you doing on a public bus?", She asked him,

"My car had broken down on the mainland, so I had to take a bus to go home", Cheta answered,

"You didn't get a cab?", she asked again,

"My phone battery was dead, so there was no way I could call anyone or get a cab", Cheta answered again,

"Typical Cheta, always forgetting to charge his phone", she said, chuckling,

"Behave Nneoma, we have guests", Cheta's mum, chides her,

"Dinma is not a guest, she is practically family", she said again,

Cheta brought up another conversation to distract us, which we had, then about an hour later, Cheta's mum, excused herself and said she was going to bed, she left and we continued talking.

"Nneoma, thank you for the clothes, I got them and Cheta said you helped him buy them", I said to Nneoma,

"Yes, that's fine. He was so insistent, I couldn't say no.", she replied.

We laughed and then she said she was tired and was going to bed,

"I think I'm still jetlagged and getting used to the time zone or maybe it's the wine but I'm tired and sleepy", she said to Cheta and me,

"That's fine, good night. It was nice meeting you", I told her, just as she was getting up,

"It was nice meeting you too Dinma. Good night brother", she said and then climbed up the stairs.

After she left, Cheta turned and asked me what I'll want to do next, I told him, I wanted to lie down too because I was a little tired too. So we went up to his room, but after I had taken a bath, I didn't feel very tired anymore, in fact, we were both very awake and so we watched a movie until we slept off.
