Chapter 5: Everything's Starting to Get Really Complicated

LATE MARCH. TUESDAY MORNING

[Not quite 8:00 am, Ramona's House.]

Morning came, and as if the snowstorm had never occurred last night, the sky was clear. Leftover snow clung to the sidewalks and houses, small puddles dotted on the roads, and droplets fell from leaves, glistening in the sunlight.

As the bright ray of sunshine passed through a glass door, they illuminated the floor where a young man lay shirtless, sleeping peacefully without a care in the world.

SCOTT PILGRIM

23 YEARS OLD

STATUS: THE MAIN CHARACTER

Ugh…?

He woke up, staring at the ceiling for a moment to adjust before sitting up. Around him, the floor was a mess, with pillows and blankets sprawled everywhere. His eyes immediately darted towards the bathroom in front of him, where the sound of running water was clear. The door was wide open, and someone was in clear view.

Inside the bathroom stood a young woman with vibrant pink hair, adorned with purple tips. She wore a white tank top and blue sweatpants, a towel draped over her shoulders. Her hair was still damp from the shower, and Scott couldn't help but stare at her be captivated by her clear, flawless skin, a striking sight in the morning light, a sight that completely captivated him.

She stood before the mirror, brushing her teeth, her other hand lightly resting on the sink. Her gaze was fixed on her reflection, though she was already aware of Scott's gaze lingering on her, she still just ignores it.

RAMONA FLOWERS

AGE UNKNOWN

STATUS: ALSO, THE MAIN CHARACTER

Ptooi

Ramona spat into sink, where the water continued to run. She splashed her face with the cool water, feeling refreshed, before drying herself with the towel hanging around her neck.

Ramona Flowers: "If you don't mind. I still have work later so can you clean up when you're done staring?"

She walked out of the bathroom, glancing down at Scott who remained seated on the floor, still mesmerized by her.

Scott Pilgrim: "What time is it?"

His question came out absentmindedly.

Ramona Flowers: "Like 7:30."

She responded simply and directly.

Scott finally folded the blankets, glancing around the room before asking.

Scott Pilgrim: "Hey, did Cifer already leave?"

Ramona Flowers: "Not yet actually. He's downstairs making breakfast."

She answered, retrieving a shirt from her closet, slipping it on and closing the closet door.

Scott Pilgrim: "Oh… I thought he'd left by now. You know, work and all. Haha..."

His attempt at concealing his disappointment was evident as he laid the folded blankets and pillows on her already neat bed.

Ramona Flowers: "He said he won't be leaving without you."

She passes by Scott, heading towards the doorway.

Ramona Flowers: "Come on, or I'll be late."

With that, she exited the room, her footsteps fading as she descended the stairs. Scott quickly followed suit, his footsteps echoing louder than Ramona's.

As the two peacefully made their way toward the kitchen, they were greeted by the clink of plates being set on the table and the gentle sound of liquid being poured into mugs. On the table, they saw neatly prepared toast topped with butter, several pieces of bacon on each of the three plates, along with a sunny-side-up egg for each person. Three mugs were set beside each of the plates, each filled with tea.

Ramona Flowers: "Why do you still look crap even when you slept like a baby?"

Ramona comments and smiles as she enters the kitchen and see a young man pouring tea on the mugs. Despite his fatigued look, he actually slept quite well last night. He wore a red apron with white frills over a white button-up shirt, its sleeves rolled up, paired with black pants. In one hand, he held a kettle, and in the other, he wore a blue oven mitten.

CIFER POWERS

27 YEARS OLD

STATUS: OUR MAIN CHARACTER

Cifer Powers: "Is our sleeping beauty awake yet?"

He put the kettle down gently as he spoke.

Ramona Flowers: "He's fine."

Scott Pilgrim: "I'm fine!"

He announced, popping out from behind Ramona with a huge smile on his face. His hair was still a mess, but at least he had a shirt on now.

Scott Pilgrim: "Oh~~ That smells good."

Scott immediately noticed the warm meal when the scent hit his nose. He passed by Ramona and headed straight towards the dining table.

Scott Pilgrim: "You cook?"

He asked, taking a seat in one of the chairs.

Cifer Powers: "I've cooked for you dozens of times now."

Scott Pilgrim: "You have?"

Though Scott's memory failed him again, Cifer has indeed cooked for him and their friends in the past.

Cifer Powers: "Anyway just eat, I'm already late."

Despite Cifer's statement, Scott was already digging into his meal.

Scott Pilgrim: "Comf on Ramona. Thish tashesh sho good."

With his mouth already full, Scott managed to call out to Ramona, who smiled amusedly at Scott and Cifer. As Ramona approached the table, Scott patted the seat beside him, signaling her to sit down next to him.

Ramona takes a moment to look at Scott who was enthusiastically gesturing for her to sit beside him while stuffing his mouth with bacon, and Cifer, who still had the frilly apron on and was eating quite peacefully.

Ramona Flowers: "Alright alright. Guess I can't really work with an empty stomach."

Ultimately, she decided to sit next to Scott, finding his enthusiasm cute.

The three enjoyed their meal, Scott enjoying it a bit too much. They didn't speak a word and the only sounds echoing in the room was utensils being scrapped on plates and Scott's audible chewing.

-------------------------------------------------------------

[30 minutes later. Outside Ramona's house.]

After finishing their meal, the trio went about doing what they needed to do before leaving. Scott took his time freshening up, Cifer cleaned the kitchen and washed the dishes, and Ramona went back to her room to change her clothes. The three agreed to just meet up outside after they were done.

Scott and Cifer finished first and waited just outside the porch for Ramona. Though Scott had initially wanted to stay inside with her, Cifer managed to drag him out at least.

When Ramona finally stepped out, feeling quite refreshed. Unlike Cifer and Scott who had to wear the same clothes they had on from yesterday, Ramona had changed into a new outfit: A black trac jacket with pink stripes down the middle, zipped up over a light green button-up shirt. Her top was complemented by a short white skirt, purple stockings, and sleek black boots. She carried a small shoulder bag adorned with a large star, something Cifer was familiar with. On one of her hands were purple rollerblades.

After locking the door behind her, Ramona strolled down the porch over to Cifer and Scott, pausing at the last step.

Ramona Flowers: "Give me a sec."

She gracefully sat down on one of the steps and swiftly swapped out her boots for the roller blades, tucking the former pair into her small bag.

'Woah…' Scott thought as he stared intently at Ramona's legs while she changed footwear.

Scott Pilgrim: "Woah~!"

His thoughts turned vocal as he caught a glimpse of her space-defying bag and was genuinely amused. Meanwhile, Cifer, who had already seen it before, was texting on his phone, his attention elsewhere.

Scott Pilgrim: "That's cool."

He said, pointing at Ramona's bag with a curious stare.

Ramona Flowers: "This? Just some extra storage space."

She answers vaguely, standing up and skating ahead with fluid movements.

Ramona Flowers: "Which way are you guys going?"

She stopped just outside her fence and looked in both directions.

Scott Pilgrim: "I go this way"

Cifer Powers: "I'm heading this way"

The two answered almost simultaneously, though they each pointed in completely opposite directions.

Hehe~

Ramona let out a light chuckle at their synchronized but opposing responses, finding it amusing. She glanced at both of them before skating towards Cifer.

Ramona Flowers: "Looks like we're going the same way."

She smiled, then turned towards Scott.

Ramona Flowers: "See you later then, Scott."

She said farewell to Scott with a warm smile before skating ahead. Cifer waved his goodbye before following behind her. Scott, who seemed reluctant to part ways with Ramona, quickly reached out and grasped Ramona's hand to stop her.

Scott Pilgrim: "Uh… Wait"

Ramona Flowers: "Hm?"

Stopping in her tracks and turned to look at Scott with a curious expression, her eyebrows slightly raised, waiting for him to continue.

Scott Pilgrim: "Well… Uh… You know… Yeah"

Though it seems like whatever he planned to say got stuck in his throat. He mutters and stutters before glancing at Cifer who was beside Ramona, almost as if he's begging for something. Cifer noticed his sight and caught on quick.

Cifer Powers: "Well, I'll be going ahead. I'll leave you two lovebirds alone to flirt."

He teased, a playful smirk forms on his face as he walks away. Though Ramona seemed unaffected, Scott was visibly pleased.

'Nice one Cif' Scott thought as he watched Cifer leave him and Ramona alone.

Ramona Flowers: "I'll catch up when I'm done."

She called out to Cifer as he continued ahead, just responding with a casual thumbs-up without turning back. Ramona turned her attention back to Scott, her expression a bit expectant at what he was planning to say.

Ha…

Scott sighed before he spoke, nervous for reasons he couldn't pinpoint. He kept a tight grip on Ramona's hand, afraid she might walk away before he could get his words out. Ramona stood patiently, waiting for him to talk, not even minding that he was holding her hand a bit too tightly. Scott's hand trembled, and his throat felt constricted, as if his words were stuck, unable to come out.

Ramona wasn't blind to his near nervous breakdown however and decides to help him calm down.

Ramona Flowers: "Don't rush yourself dude, we got time"

She offered reassuringly, hoping to ease his tension.

Ramona Flowers: "Actually, scratch that"

She added after checking her watch.

Ramona Flowers: "We don't have that much time"

Her voice carried a touch of playfulness despite the urgency, lightening the mood.

Haha…

Though that was the best she could do, it seems to have worked like a charm, quite literally. Scott let out a light chuckle, his nervousness momentarily dissipating, replaced with adoration as he locked eyes with Ramona. Curious herself, Ramona returned his gaze, unsure of what's actually happening.

'Oh, her eyes…' He thought, lost in captivation by their icy clarity. For him it seemed to reflect the clear skies directly, he found himself drawn in Ramona's cool lighted eyes.

Meanwhile, Ramona, equally caught in the moment, took notice of Scott's warm, earthy hued eyes. Beyond the color however, she saw how genuine his feelings were currently, as if there wasn't a speck of malice in them. She couldn't help but recall when she locked eyes with Cifer back then. While Cifer seemed like he was keeping things to himself, Scott on the other hand was an open book.

The two locked eyes for a moment before Ramona broke the silence, turning her head to the side with a playful tone.

Ramona Flowers: "D-Dude, I'll be late for work if you don't say anything"

She stuttered her words slightly as she tucked some hair behind her ear.

Scott Pilgrim: "Oh right."

Breaking out of the charm, he suddenly felt very bold.

Scott Pilgrim: "You see, we didn't really get to finish our… date…"

Though as he spoke, his nervousness slowly crept back in.

Scott Pilgrim: "So I was thinking… if we could… go on another one…?"

He ended on a nervous mumble, but Ramona still managed to catch what he meant.

Hm…

Ramona thinks about it for a a moment before deciding.

Ramona Flowers: "Sure, I don't see why not."

She agrees on the date, but still has a question.

Ramona Flowers: "So, what did you have in mind?"

Scott Pilgrim: "We can go on Wednesday after our show… Oh right!"

Suddenly, Scott recalled what his original plan was.

Scott Pilgrim: "My band has a show that day, at the RockIt. 9 pm."

Ramona Flowers: "You have a band."

It wasn't so much a question as a statement of fact.

Scott Pilgrim: "Yeah, we're pretty bad. Please say you'll come."

Though he downplays his band, Scott still eagerly insists for her to show up. Ramona considered for a moment, noticing Scott's grip had loosened. She gently pulled her arm away and gave him a vague answer as she started skating away.

Ramona Flowers: "Yeah, sure. 9 pm tomorrow. I'll try to get there."

Ramona drifts away without waiting for Scott's response, thinking he would keep her there if she lingered any longer. The snow parted beneath her skates as she whizzed along the frozen pavement. If she was being honest, Ramona wasn't entirely sure if she wanted to a second date. She did find him quite cute and appreciated the attention she was being given. His obvious affection didn't unsettle her; instead, she felt somewhat flattered by it. Granted, she did hope he wouldn't pry into her past next time.

As soon as Ramona was out of sight, Scott turned in the opposite direction, heading home. After a few steps, he halted abruptly, realizing he had no idea where he was.

Scott Pilgrim: "Wait… Where is this even…"

He muttered to himself, uncertain of his surroundings. But he decided to carry on thinking he'll eventually get home.

Meanwhile, Cifer was already quite far away from Scott and Ramona, giving him a chance to think about things. Though he didn't show it, he felt a tinged of annoyance at Scott for easily discarding Knives for a girl he had just met. Yet, he also felt relieved, as he never truly supported Scott's relationship with Knives anyway.

'But is this one, okay?' Cifer wondered silently to himself, pondering whether he should support Scott's newfound love interest in Ramona.

Deep inside, he was quite worried for Ramona as he heard from his sister that she ran away to Toronto after a bad break up, he thought that entering a new one now isn't good for her emotionally. Ultimately, however, he dismissed these thoughts, reminding himself that it wasn't his place to interfere with other people's romantic life.

-------------------------------------------------------------

[Not long after Ramona separated from Scott]

As soon as Scott disappeared from view behind her, Ramona caught a glimpse of a noticed the tired looking person just right ahead and picked up her pace. She smiled and called out as she approached, hoping to catch his attention and get him to stop for a moment.

Ramona Flowers: "Hey~!"

Despite her cheerful call, Cifer continued at his slow pace, seemingly lost in thought. Ramona effortlessly caught up with him, slowing down until she matched his pace and stayed beside him. Though it still didn't catch his attention.

Ramona Flowers: "Hey~~~"

Cifer Powers: "Hm?"

She pokes him on the arm, which finally got him to notice her as he turns to the side to look at Ramona.

Ramona Flowers: "Finally noticed me, got something in your mind?"

Cifer shakes his head, then makes a few quick gestures with his hands, even pointing his ears and mouth, hoping she might understand.

Ramona Flowers: "What… are you doing?"

Ramona tilted her head, obviously puzzled.

Ha…

Cifer sighed softly and tried again, this time slower and more deliberately. He pointed at his mouth and ears, then shook his head while miming in the air.

Ramona Flowers: "Heh. Dude, just talk to me. What are you even doing?"

Ramona's voice held a mix of curiosity and amusement as she watched Cifer make gestures. Though she couldn't quite make sense of whatever he was doing, and his persistence in continuing only confused her even more.

Ahem. Hm. Hem. Hm!

Suddenly, Cifer halted and cleared his throat, drawing Ramona's attention as she stops as well. Then he finally spoke.

Cifer Powers: "Sorry about that. What did you say?"

Ramona Flowers: "What was that about?"

She questions, wondering what was up with his weird gesturing a moment ago.

Cifer Powers: "Sorry about that. I went deaf for a bit there."

He pointed to his ears before resuming his walk. Ramona followed quietly beside him, skating slowly to match his pace with a thoughtful 'hmm~~' under her breath.

Ramona Flowers: "So… you went deaf… for a moment? How does that happen?"

Ramona's confusion was evident, clearly puzzled by Cifer's explanation.

Cifer Powers: "I'm not really sure"

He shrugged, equally unsure of how to articulate the experience.

Cifer Powers: "Some kind of sound thing when I run."

It was the best explanation he could muster, though it didn't really clarify anything.

Cifer Powers: "I see things are going great for you two though~"

Cifer nudged Ramona's arm with his elbow, teasing her as he tried to shift the conversation to a lighter topic.

Ramona Flowers: "Shut up~~ Ugh~"

Ramona rolled her eyes, a playful grin tugging at her lips despite her mock annoyance.

Ramona Flowers: "He just wants me to come and see his show or something."

Cifer Powers: "Oh right. They had a show on RockIt tomorrow night."

Cifer said, as if the thought just popped into his head.

Cifer Powers: "Ah shit, I have to pick up Julie today."

His tone shifted from casual to slightly frustrated as he remembered what he promised his sister.

Ramona Flowers: "Got plans with Julie?"

Ramona asks, her curiosity apparent.

Cifer Powers: "Yeah, I was supposed to help her set things up at RockIt today."

Ramona Flowers: "In a rush then? Should I get you there?"

Ramona offers her assistance, already looking around for a door with a star mark carved on it.

Cifer Powers: "No, I'm good."

He declines, checking his watch for the time as he stops at a crossroad.

Cifer Powers: "Listen, I'll see you at the show. But I gotta run."

Ramona Flowers: "Oh uh. Ok, see you."

Cifer Powers: "Yeah. See you around."

With a quick wave, Cifer bids his farewell to Ramona and hurried across the street, his figure gradually fading into the distance. Ramona watched him go, her hand still mid-wave even after he was already out of sight.

Ramona Flowers: "Ha… Looks like I'm going to the show now."

She sighed, putting her hand down and skating off to her left, gliding smoothly along the sidewalk.

At first Ramona wasn't sure if she wanted to attend Scott's show, recalling the previous one where she felt like an outsider wandering through a party where she knew no on. However, knowing that Cifer and Julie would also be there, she eventually decided to go ahead and show up.

-------------------------------------------------------------

[8:30 am. Near Cifer's House]

Cifer made his way towards his own home, sweating and just managing to steady his breath. On the way he got a text from his sister telling him that she spent the night at his house, which made him rush over. He was aware he never really introduced the two, much less tell Julie that he was living with someone else.

As Cifer spots his house, he instinctively quickens his pace, his mind wandering. Suddenly, he bumps into—Or more so, passed through something.

Hm? Huh?

He stopped in his tracks as he felt a shiver down his spine, a wave of discomfort. Confused, not understanding what he just walked through, he turned around to see if it was still there, whatever it was…

Cifer Powers: "Hm? Bat wings?"

He muttered to himself, staring at the sight before him. Four identical, transparent women was hovering in the air. Though they had small bat-like wings, it didn't seem to be the reason they were flying as the wings remained motionless. Each of them wore a white tank top and black miniskirt, paired with white socks and gray sneakers. Despite their faint and ethereal appearance, Cifer could blurrily discern that they had short black hair and grayish skin tone.

Cifer Powers: "I didn't think they show up here."

With a shrug, he carried on his way, seemingly unfazed by the sight he had just witnessed.

Making his way towards the front door of his own house, he grabbed the handle and with a—

Click

—He opened it effortlessly, not needing a key to unlock it.

When he finally stepped foot inside the building, he was immediately greeted by the sound of hurried footsteps, echoing from both upstairs and downstairs, stomping loudly and quickly approaching him. As he closed the door behind him, two figures quickly emerged.

Descending from upstairs was a tall woman with long brown-hair cascading down her back, wearing a red tank top and blue jeans, her round glasses perched her nose. Despite her sharp gaze, there was a hint of fatigue in her demeanor, she almost looks like Cifer.

JULIE POWERS

22 YEARS OLD

STATUS: COULDN'T SLEEP LAST NIGHT

From downstairs came a petite young girl, her blonde hair held back with a black hairband. Her fair skin streaked with paint, and she wore a green apron splattered with colors over an oversized gray shirt and white shorts. Like Julie, this one also felt weary.

ROXANNE RICHTER

24 YEARS OLD

STATUS: COULDN'T SLEEP LAST NIGHT

The two, fatigue evident in their looks, give Cifer a sharp gaze as they step closer to him.

Julie Powers: "Who the hell is she?"

Roxanne Richter: "Is she really your sister?"

They pointed at each other while simultaneously posing different questions that conveyed the same concern.

Cifer Powers: "Uh… You guys mind if I shower first?"

He attempts to delay his answer for now, feeling a bit uncomfortable with the fact he hasn't freshened up for the day.

Julie Powers: "Oh no you don't! You are giving me an explanation. Right now!"

As Cifer tries to walk past the two women, Julie grabs his arm, preventing him from escaping.

Cifer Powers: "I will, I swear. I just need to wash up first."

He insists, though Cifer wasn't trying to pull his arm away from Julie's grip, he hopes she will let go on her own.

Julie takes a good look at Cifer and sighs upon seeing his appearance, disheveled hair, sweating skin, and unkept clothes.

Julie Powers: "Ha… Fine, but you better have a good reason why you're keeping a woman here."

Cifer Powers: "Have I ever lied to you?"

Julie Powers: "… No…"

Julie reluctantly loosens her grip, letting him go.

Julie Powers: "Ugh~ I hate you. Get your butt in the shower

Julie groans, frustrated, as she shoos Cifer away with a dismissive wave of her hand.

Cifer Powers: "Alright alright. I won't be long."

With that, Cifer leaves to the bathroom, leaving the two women in the living room. Yes, Roxanne was still there, though the siblings seemed to forget she was still around. She just sat back on the couch with her arms crossed, observing the two siblings' bond interact.

Roxanne Richter: "So… THAT'S how you talk with Cif."

Roxanne spoke as soon as Cifer was out of sight, her lips curling into a teasing grin. Her eyebrows arched playfully as she directed her comment at Julie.

Julie Powers: "Shut the fuck up, you're lucky I didn't tell him about how you fucking swung your fucking sword at me last night."

Julie snapped, her face growing crimson with a mix of embarrassment and annoyance.

Roxanne Richter: "Ha! Gonna cry to your brother? I can't believe it."

Roxanne mocked, her laughter echoing as she stood up and sauntered toward the kitchen, her tone dripping with obvious sarcasm.

Julie could only groan in frustration, her footsteps heavy as she stomped her way back upstairs, clearly annoyed at Roxanne's mocking demeanor.

Julie stormed into Cifer's room, slamming the door behind her in a fit of anger, throwing herself onto the bed. Her belongings bounced and scattered slightly, making a small mess on the sheets.

Julie Powers: "Ugh… Fuck this…"

She groaned, gradually beginning to calm down.

Meanwhile, as Roxanne passed by laundry room on her way towards the kitchen, she abruptly stopped at the open door.

Hm…

She paused for a moment as she peered into the brightly lit room, her mind racing as she felt something nagging at the back of her mind. Earlier when Cifer had come home, a faint scent caught Roxanne's attention, it was why she suddenly fell silent a while ago. She was thinking about the fragrance she noticed on Cifer, it was something familiar to her, but she wanted to make sure.

Roxanne Richter: "Gr… Fuck… Let's just get this over with."

She muttered under her breath, motivating herself to push forward.

Entering the laundry room and goes straight to the hamper, but she walked straight past the one with her own clothes in it and stood over the one with Cifer's. She pauses for a moment, as if needing to justify her actions.

Roxanne Richter: "I'm just making sure…"

She muttered to herself, scanning the clothes inside. Her eyes landed on a familiar white buttoned shirt hanging over the side.

Roxanne Richter: "There it is…"

She reached for the shirt, lifting it gingerly to inspect it more closely. Bringing it to her nose, she took a deep breath, trying to pinpoint the familiar scent. However, another smell overwhelmed her senses.

Roxanne Richter: "Smoking bastard."

She muttered, her nose wrinkling in distaste as she caught the lingering smell of cigarettes on the fabric. Shaking her head she carries on her inspection, trying to catch the faint scent underneath the smoke.

Sniff… Sniff…

Cifer Powers: "Rox? Did you start up the… wash…er…?"

The familiar voice caught her by surprise, it made her stop what she was doing and turn towards the door to see a half-naked Cifer, still wet from the bath with a towel around his neck.

Cifer paused, staring at her for a moment, trying to process what he was witnessing. His friend is in the laundry room, holding the shirt he had worn yesterday closely to her face, eagerly sniffing it. Yup, that was enough for him to decide on what to do.

Bam!

He slammed the door shut.

Roxanne Richter: "Ahhh! Wait! Wait! You got it wrong!"

Roxanne panicked, rushing to the door, her face flushed with embarrassment.

Roxanne Richter: "You are definitely misunderstanding something! Open the damn door!"

Roxanne frantically fiddled with the doorknob, twisting it repeatedly while banging on the door with her fist, trying to push it open. On the other side, Cifer braced himself against the door, resisting Roxanne's attempts to burst through.

Cifer Powers: "You know. Mmph. Rox. As your friend. Hnng. I don't really mind. Mph. If you're into. Hmp. Weird shit."

Cifer grunts as he spoke, trying to keep the door shut.

Cifer Powers: "So. Hng. I won't judge you. Mph. For it."

Roxanne Richter: "Damn it! Just let me explain!"

Cifer Powers: "Why don't you. Mph. Take a few minutes in there. Hmph. To calm down."

Roxanne Richter: "Open the damn door!"

She yelled, her face still crimson with embarrassment but now with a mix of frustration as she tries to push the door open.

'Why is this dude so fucking strong' Roxanne thought, wondering how Cifer was managing to hold his ground against her.

The two carried on for a few minutes until Roxanne had enough.

Gr~ Thud!

Frustrated and a bit annoyed, Roxanne gives up and kicks the door before deciding to just leave through the window and enter through the back. But by the time she reentered the house, Cifer was already gone. The door was being kept locked by a chair jammed under the doorknob and a note placed on the seat. Curious, Roxanne calms herself down and picks up the note to read it.

I'll listen to your explanation when you get home. I need to get my sister to RockIt. I left you some money in the living room. P.S. I won't judge you :>

Grrr…

She growls as she reads the paper, slowly crumpling it before stomping the ground with her foot and screams on top of her lungs.

Roxanne Richter: "IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK! DAMN IT!!!"

-------------------------------------------------------------

[Meanwhile]

On the way to RockIt, Cifer drove his bright pink car through the streets, the engine purring smoothly as it moved away from his house. Seated beside him on the passenger side was Julie, her gaze fixed out the window, lost in her thoughts.

Julie Powers: "So… Want to talk about your friend now?"

Cifer Powers: "Can we talk about it some other time?"

Julie Powers: "Fine."

Julie sensed it wasn't the right moment to press further, recognizing it as a sensitive subject. Meanwhile, contrary to Julie's assumption, Cifer was more preoccupied with thinking of what awaited him at home with Roxanne rather than properly introducing her to Julie.

-------------------------------------------------------------

[4:00 pm. Downtown Toronto]

RockIt, situated on Church Street, stood as a prominent punk venue in Toronto. It was an expansive building that served as a hub for various events, hosting whatever they could from live bands to stand-up comedies to talk shows. However, for now it lacks its usual lively atmosphere. The familiar echoes of laughter, music and cheers were replaced by the sounds of chatter, clinking tools, and the shuffling of equipment being moved across the floor.

Keeping the workers organized was our fatigue-driven character, Cifer. He stood in the middle of the venue, engaged in a conversation with a man dressed in a dark gray suit, sporting well-combed black hair and a well-kept beard. Cifer held a clipboard, his finger pointing at the lights being hung above the stage. The man in the suit followed Cifer's gestures with his eyes, nodding his head in agreement to whatever Cifer was telling him while occasionally glancing at the clipboard.

???: "Are you sure that's him?"

A voice questioned from one of the building's indoor balconies. A young man with dark stood behind the railing, wearing a khaki jacket over a red button-up shirt with black striped. His hair fell stylishly over his left eye as he stared intently at Cifer, observing him closely at his every movement.

UNKNOWN

AGE UNKNOWN

STATUS: STALKING???

I've read his file, he has quite a reputation.

He was speaking to an earpiece, though it was hard to discern the voice as they seemed to be using a voice changer.

—Though I haven't been able to find out much. I do know he's a possible target.

???: "He any good?"

The young man asked, curious of Cifer's fighting capabilities.

—It says he does not know how to fight, but it's strange…

The voice pauses for a moment, clearly suspicious of whatever he was reading.

There's no record of him ever entering conflict with another person. Like a pacifist.

???: "What? Can't I just beat him now then?"

The young man spoke with confidence and impatience, hitting his palm with his fist.

No. Leave him. Our main focus is Scott Pilgrim, we only investigated him since he was a possible target, but it seems it was unneeded.

The voice on the other side of his earpiece ordered his restraint.

???: "Fine, but this Pilgrim person better put up a good performance."

Oh you don't have to worry about that. Based on what I found out he was dubbed the "best fighter in the province"

???: "Good, I'll enjoy putting him in his place. Hehehe."

He comments with a sinister chuckle, quite satisfied with the possible challenge.

Contact me again when you've completed your task. If you don't within a week, I'll consider you've failed.

The voice says their last words before cutting off the call, not giving the young man a chance to retort.

Tsk.

The man clicks his tongue, seemingly offended at the voice assuming he would fail a task he assumed was simple.

???: "I'll show him… After I'm done with Pilgrim, he'll be next."

He muttered, sinister confidence lacing his voice as he snapped his fingers.

Almost immediately, four portals materialized on the ground behind him. They shimmered with a mystical, grayish hue. And like typical portals, shapes began to emerge from each of them simultaneously, rising slowly into view.

???: "I'm better than him anyway. Isn't that right girls?"

He questioned, turning to the four beings that had emerged behind him, slowly taking shape.

It only took a moment for the four beings to solidify into young girls with wide, sinister smiles that revealed their sharp teeth. Their skin had a grayish and transparent tone, and their hair was short, with slit eyes and red sclera adding to their eerie appearance. They all wore identical outfits: a white tank top with a large star print on the middle, paired with a black mini skirt, white socks, and gray sneakers. And despite their small, bat-like wings behind them, they were levitating effortlessly off the ground. They were basically the same person or being in this sense.

DEMON GIRLS

AGE: QUITE OLD

STATUS: THERE'S FOUR OF THEM.

Demon Girls: "Yes, Lord Matthew. Lord Matthew is the best!"

The four cheer in unison behind him. Contrary to their intimidating appearance, they were quite cheery and bright.

???: "Hehehe. Hahahaha! Matthew Pattel will be live tomorrow to kill Scott Pilgrim! I'll show him, I'll show everyone that I am the best!"

MATTHEW PATEL

23 YEARS OLD

STATUS: NOT A PIRATE

His laughter rang out maniacally, echoing through the building. He completely forgot he was in a public space as a few people glanced in his direction, dismissing him as a weirdo before returning to their tasks

Hm? Ah~~~?

Meanwhile, as Matthew was off on his own world, the four demon girls noticed a certain worn-out individual. They silently flew over the railing and hovered on the ceiling directly above their target, while also making sure they were unseen.

Demon Girls 1&3: "It IS him!"

Demon Girls 2&4: "He's here! He's here as well!"

They exclaimed excitedly, as though they had stumbled upon someone they hadn't seen in a long time.

Demon Girls 1&2: "Should we say Hi?"

Demon Girls 3&4: "Should we? Should we?"

The four buzzed with excitement, not really sure of what to do. But before they could decide, Matthew called them back.

Matthew Patel: "Girls! We're going back to practice. I need to rehearse my lines."

Matthew walked away, expecting the demon girls to follow him.

Demon Girls: "Yes, Lord Matthew."

And obediently, they floated after him.

Matthew Patel: "Ahem. Mhm. If. You want. To fight. me~ Ahem."

Clearing his throat, Matthew practiced his lines aloud as he exited the building, the four demon girls hovering behind him.

Hehe~

Though they glanced back at the young man for a moment before carrying on, exchanging giggles amongst themselves.

[More than 24 hours later. The RockIt]

Tonight, RockIt was transformed from yesterday's more professional ambiance into a vibrant hub of revelry and music. Guests streamed in through the doors, bartenders hustled behind the bar, and security stood watch at every entrance and around the stage.

The expansive building buzzed with energy as people mingled and socialized, their laughter and conversations filling the air along with sounds of glass clinking. It was a night of enjoyment and music. And in the middle of it all, much like the previous party, Cifer in this one mingled with guests, clipboard in hand.

This time, he wore a gray sweater adorned with a demon face print on the center, paired with gray jeans and black sneakers. His usual black choker was wrapped tightly in place around his neck, complemented by a wristband on his right wrist with the word 'Powers' sewn onto it, and a black watch on the other. His ears adorned button-like earrings, completing his appearance.

CIFER POWERS

27 YEARS OLD

STATUS: PAID FOR EVERYTHING

Unlike the previous party, Cifer was accompanied by his sister this time, Julie. She wore a white tank top paired with high-rise purple jeans. Her round glasses perched perfectly on her nose, and hoop earrings dangled from her ears. Completing her look, she sported a similar wristband to Cifer's, wrapped around her left wrist, the same word 'Powers' embroidered onto it.

JULIE POWERS

22 YEARS OLD

STATUS: CIFER SPOILS HER A LOT

Cifer Powers: "Alright Steph, as we agreed you get to play one song. One."

Cifer addressed the young man with his arm draped casually around Julie's shoulders. He wore a buttoned brown collared shirt, his wrist adorned with a silver watch. He appeared rugged and tired, a bit like Cifer, with combed-back brown hair matching his beard and faint bags under his eyes.

STEPHEN STILLS

22 YEARS OLD

STATUS: CIFER DOESN'T LIKE HIM

Stephen Stills: "Do you think people will like us?"

Stephen asked, keeping Julie close as he began to get anxious.

Stephen Stills: "What if they don't like us? What if they think we suck? Do we suck? We suck, don't we? Ugh~~~"

Stephen let go of Julie and started spiraling into a mental breakdown due to his own pessimistic thoughts. He placed a palm on his forehead, flailing his other hand around as he slowly succumbs to his anxiety.

Julie Powers: "Is the other band even here yet?"

Julie ignored her boyfriend having a breakdown and carried on the conversation with Cifer.

Cifer Powers: "I heard they were going to be late since they had to sneak their drummer out her parent's house."

Julie Powers: "Ugh, can we not just have Stephen's band play first?"

Cifer Powers: "I mean…"

Before Cifer could fully answer, he checked his watch for the time and sighed.

Cifer Powers: "Ha… Might as well."

Stephen Stills: "Should I just call it off… It's not too late right…? Maybe I sh-Ack! Guh!"

Slap!

As Stephen started mumbling about his cowardly plan to back out the show, pacing around in the background, Cifer grabbed him by the collar, yanking him closer and delivering a sharp slap to snap him out of it.

Cifer Powers: "Go set up now. You're playing."

Cifer tells Stephen firmly, staring him down as if intimidating him. Stephen could only comply, nodding his head as he was calming down thanks to the slap.

Stephen Stills: "Yeah, sure. Sure. I'll go set up."

Stephen backs away from Cifer, but before he left, he made his way beside Julie.

Stephen Stills: "I'll see you after the show Baby."

Julie Powers: "You better not embarrass me, Stephen."

Stephen Stills: "I'll try."

Stephen gives a light peck on Julie's cheek before sheepishly leaving towards the backstage door.

Ha…

Both Cifer and Julie sighed as they watched Stephen tremble from nervousness while walking away. As soon as he was out of sight, the siblings carried on their conversation like normal.

Cifer Powers: "I thought you two broke up… again."

Cifer had a weird pause in the middle of his sentence as he glanced at Julie, she shot him a glare before sighing and softening her expression.

Julie Powers: "Ha… Honestly, at this point I don't know why I keep him around."

Cifer Powers: "Well as long as you're happy… Just tone the break ups down, ok?"

Julie Powers: "No promises. Anyway I should get to my friends."

Julie cut the conversation short as she spotted her two friends far off through the crowd of people.

Cifer Powers: "Sure. I'll be out back for a bit."

Julie Powers: "You better not be smoking again. I swear to God if I smell cigarette on you, I'll ignore you for the rest of the month."

Julie yelled over her shoulders as she walked away, clearly showing her disdain for Cifer's bad habit. She huffed away towards her friends, who were already seated at a table, leaving Cifer to shake his head with a faint smile.

Cifer made his way towards the back, weaving through the sea of people who were now completely focused on the stage as the band about to perform set up their instruments. Glancing up, Cifer took a quick scan upstage and saw three familiar people. Scott was tuning his bass, while Stephen and Kimberly were setting up the drums. The trio were taking their time setting up, not concerned with the scheduling or the fact that the other band is currently a no-show.

SCOTT PILGRIM

KIMBERLY PINE

AGE: BOTH 23

STATUS: THEY USED TO DATE

The three were dressed quite casually, each of them reflecting their unique fashin sense, as they didn't really coordinate about wearing a uniform for their performance. Scott sported an orange ringer shirt with a 'Plumtree' print and blue jeans, occasionally occasional glanced towards the crowd as he tuned his bass, as if looking for someone. Stephen on the other hand, still looking a bit nervous, was fussing over the drum set up, ensuring everything was perfect. Kimberly, who had already stopped helping him midway through the setup, was already annoyed at him since the drums were fine as is and stood nearby wearing a black track jacket and a purple skirt that reached to her knees.

While waiting for Stephen to stop messing with her drums, Kimberly glanced at the crowd, quickly scanning the sea of faces. Her eyes immediately found Cifer, who stood out amidst the throng. Appearance-wise, he was not hard to spot given he was the only one who looked dead among the lovely people. She gave a small wave, catching his attention. Cifer noticed her immediately, spreading a smile across his face as he waved back. He then turned and walked towards the exit, going through the crowd again. Kimberly watched him go, giving a small smile as he left.

-------------------------------------------------------------

[Outside. An alleyway]

Cifer relaxed as finally escaped the bustling social setting. With a cigarette between his fingers, he exhaled a plume of smoke into the cool night air. He leaned against the rough and cold brick wall, savoring the chill breeze that cut through the air. The muffled sounds of music and laughter filtered out from the building behind him, a distant hum that became the only sound in the quiet of the alleyway.

Unlike the colorfully lit interior the alleyway was cloaked in shadows. But Cifer didn't seem to mind the darkness; he preferred it this way. It was a reprieve from the noise and chaos. Here, no one bothered him, no one talked to him, no one asked him for anything. It was just him and the quiet, a rare moment of peace.

???: "Cifer Powers, I assume?"

UNKNOWN

AGE UNKNOWN

STATUS: CIFER DOESN'T KNOW

Though it was too good to be true. The quiet Cifer enjoyed was abruptly shattered by a voice calling out his name.

Ha…

Cifer could only sigh, annoyed someone managed to interrupt his solitude, though he kept his irritation hidden.

Cifer Powers: "You know me, who's asking?"

His tone was polite but distant, a practiced response he often used when approached by strangers.

???: "You are very easy to find. I honestly expected you to pose a bit of a challenge."

The voice carried an air of matter-of-factness, it was quite an annoying tone.

???: "You have quite the record. Impressive grades, stellar reputation. If you were in the business world, you would've been tough competition for me."

Cifer arched an eyebrow, both curious and guarded as he faced the figure. The darkness of the alleyway hid his figure, the only discernible feature Cifer was able to notice was a pair of glasses glinting faintly in the dim light.

Cifer Powers: "I've seen enough movies to know that when someone starts monologuing about someone else, it's usually bad news."

Cifer didn't mind someone knowing details about him; he wasn't one to hide much, and his life was pretty much an open book. But the stranger's manner of speaking grated on him, frankly he found it annoying.

Cifer Powers: "So what do you want?"

???: "To have you join me."

The figure said vaguely. Cifer took a moment to process what he meant before replying.

Cifer Powers: "… I'm… not interested in whatever cult you're running."

He answers, clearly assuming things.

???: "You should be honored, only a select few who meet what's required are allowed to join the League. I am making an exemption just for you. Also, I've noticed you were already acquainted with a few of our members"

The figure ignored Cifer's dismissal, carrying on with his invitation.

???: "And frankly, you are more of a threat than the other is. I figured recruiting you was the wiser choice."

Cifer Powers: "Not interested, go away now please."

Cifer was firm with his refusal, not seeing any reason to entertain the offer. Though the person never really gave him any good offer.

???: "How rude. But no matter, the plan is already in motion."

They maintained their composure, even as they let out a hint of irritation in their voice. If Cifer could see them, he could probably see their veins starting to pop on their forehead.

Cifer Powers: "What do you—"

Boom! Crash!

Cifer was cut off by a sudden explosion, rattling the wall behind him.

Cifer Powers: "What the hell?"

Cifer exclaimed, realizing the explosion came from inside the building. He immediately moved towards the back door of the building, reaching for the doorknob when suddenly—

Swish!

The sound of a sword swung with deadly intent, aimed at his torso. Just inches from his chest, Cifer reacted quickly, grabbing the blade.

???: "Now you die!"

Though his energy was on point, his actions didn't really follow up, struggling to free his sword from Cifer's grip.

Cifer Powers: "What the fuck? Does everyone just carry swords around?"

Cifer raised his voice, unfazed by the threat, feeling a sense of familiarity as if he'd already experienced it before. He was more focused on the fact that this person was the third person he'd seen carrying a sword around so casually.

When the assailant got closer, Cifer was able to make out a few more details. The person was male, something he could already tell from the voice. And apart from his rectangular glasses, he wore a pristine white suit, starkly contrasting the dark alley. However, that was all Cifer could discern, the dim lighting still obscuring the other details.

Cifer Powers: "Ha… Listen man. I'd prefer it if you just go on your merry way."

Cifer sighed, clearly not in the mood to deal with what he can only assume was a cult member.

???: "Allow me to express my sincerest apologies."

The stranger paused, raising his sword with one hand and pointing the tip of the blade towards Cifer, his other hand placed behind his back in a dramatic gesture.

???: "For I have no intention of waiting till you threaten my plans, Powers."

Cifer Powers: "Ugh…"

Cifer just groans, thinking he has no choice but to fight this person.

The two stood at a standoff, each assessing the other, though their tensity stood in stark contrast to each other. Cifer wasn't in the mood for a fight, concerned more about what was going on inside rather than his own current dilemma. The stranger on the other hand was visibly tense, every muscle in his body poised for action. The air was thick with his intent to kill, his eyes darting around, unsure of what Cifer might do, while Cifer simply waited, his relaxed demeanor completely opposing the stranger's obvious extreme emotions.

The stranger had done his homework on the person known as Cifer Powers. According to his findings, Cifer had no known skills in fighting, no history of conflict, no apparent interest in combat. His lack of a record made the stranger wary. In his knowledge and experience, even pacifists had some history of defending themselves or succumbing to a surge of emotional outbursts. However, Cifer's history was spotless, as if the concept of fighting was entirely foreign to him.

It was precisely this anomaly that kept the stranger on edge behind his confident façade. He found Cifer's lack of any combat history more unsettling than a history filled with violence.

As his composed facade began to crumble, he charged forward with startling speed, his sword raised high intending to cleave Cifer in half with a single decisive swing. The distance closed rapidly as the stranger bore down on him, Cifer could only react with shock as the figure suddenly loomed directly in front of him.

Cifer Powers: "What the?"

???: "Don't worry! I'll make sure to take care of your sister when you're gone! Hahaha!"

With a vicious laugh, he swung his sword downward, the blade cutting through as if cutting air with a swift, clean motion until it struck the ground, cracking the pavement underneath.

Ha… Ha…

Thinking his task was complete, he released a relieved sigh, as if he had been holding his breath the entire time. But as he looked down at the ground, a slight shiver ran down his spine. His sword was firmly lodged between the cracks of the broken pavement, but there was something unsettlingly absent. There was no body, no coins left behind, not even a trace of his existence.

Then it dawned on him, looking back it wasn't as if the cut was so smooth it was like he was cutting air; he had been literally cutting through air. He glanced up to confirm his suspicions, and Cifer was gone. There was no sound, no breeze that signaled Cifer's retreat. He had simply vanished, leaving the stranger bewildered in the silent alleyway.

???: "What the… Huh?"

Swoosh! Bang!

The air stirred with an ominous rush, followed by the sound what he assumes was a gun being shot. But before he could react, a vice-like grip seized his shoulder, yanking forcefully around. There, standing before him with red eyes, was Cifer, his fist a mere inches from the stranger's face.

Ah…

That was the only sound that came out his mouth. Time seemed to slow down for the stranger as he stood paralyzed, a cold sweat trickling down his spine. He could already feel the impact of Cifer's fist as the pressure blew against his skin, his thoughts racing towards what to do.

Swish!

On pure survival instinct, he pulled the sword off the ground behind him and swung it upward in a desperate arc aimed at slicing through Cifer's waist. Even if Cifer managed to land his punch first, the stranger was confident in his skill to land a critical blow. It all hinged on whether Cifer could react to his attack or not.

As their attacks converged, closing in on their targets, the tension spiked, at least for the stranger. Locked in a deadly dance, the stranger met Cifer's eyes, and then a chilling realization dawned on him—Cifer's demeanor had shifted drastically from moments ago, this wasn't merely self-defense; Cifer was aiming to kill.
