Chapter 7

Jade hung out with friends for a few hours and drifted home to their condo on Guiffrida Avenue. A police car was backed into a stall. “Crap. She’s home.” Jade used her key at the doorknob and then deadbolt. She waltzed in like everything was cool.

Mom sat at the dining table in uniform and put her fork down. “Where have you been? Why didn’t I know you were staying out late? Is a little communication too much to ask? Why didn’t you answer my texts?”

Without intending to pick a fight, she fired back. “Aren’t you supposed to read me my rights before the interrogation?”

And the usual conflict erupted. Yelling, yelling over each other, the guilt trip over Jade having no responsibilities except stay out of trouble and get decent grades. At one point, she produced her cell phone to show the battery was dead. She forgot to charge it again. Her bad.
