Chapter 8: Gold digger

Lilly had just left after interrogating them for an hour. Both girls lay on the bed content with each other's company. Then, Alexa slowly reached and planted a soft kiss on Maggie's lips. They both smiled in the kiss.

"I've to go," Alexa said softly.

"Oh, ok," Maggie said, a little sad, which made Alexa smile. She planted another kiss on Maggie's temple before getting up.

"So, we never talked," Maggie propped herself on the elbow.

"Oh yes," Alexa turned to face her.

"So... I think we should...." Before Alexa cut her off, Maggie started saying, "Keep this between ourselves?"

"I mean, for now. I don't know what we are," Maggie said, taking Alexa's hand in between hers.

"So, we can see other people?" Alexa raised an eyebrow.

"What... no! I mean, if you want to..." Maggie said, a little heartbroken.

Alexa gave a belly-bending laugh, "Relax. I'm only messing with you." Then, she bent down and kissed her, which put Maggie at ease.

"I've to go. Thank you for the incredible date," Alexa was dressed at this point.

"I'll walk you out," Maggie got up lazily to walk her out.

It had been 20 minutes since Alexa left. Maggie was worried. So, she asked Lilly to come over.

"Well, hello to you!" Jia, Maggie's once frenemy and now best friend, came along.

"Hello! What are you doing here?" Maggie jumped in her arms.

"She was coming to visit you but stopped at my place to say hello, and I stopped her," Lilly said. She was wearing a glass with her hair in a bun.

"Why?" Maggie asked.

"You know the obvious!" Lilly just rolled her eyes. Jia just grinned, which meant Lilly had told her everything.

"Ok, I want to know everything!" Jia announced.

"I like her!" Maggie said frustratedly.

"Why the dramatic yell?" Lilly asked.

"I don't know. What if she's in for the CEO, not me?" Maggie said quietly. Alexa's comment about seeing other people was messing with her mind.

"A gold digger?" Jia asked.

No one said anything.

"Let's stalk her!" The brilliant idea from Jia's mind. Well, they didn't have a better idea, so they agreed.

"She's a very private person. All of her posts are either nature or her kickboxing sessions," Lilly said.

"Did you know that she is a kickboxer?" Jia asked Maggie.

"This is news to me," Maggie said quietly, and she wondered what else she didn't know. But, of course, her life being open to the public didn't help either.

"Alright, I will try to seduce her," Jia commented.

"What!!" Both Maggie and Lilly yelled in shock.

"Chill, I'm not that girl anymore. But let's see my friend if she's after your money," Jia patted Maggie's back.

"No! How will Alexa feel if she ever finds out?" Lilly tried to reason with them.

After a pause, Maggie said, "Do it."

(End of flashback)

Alexa felt giddy with glee ever since she came home from Maggie's place. It's hard to hide her big smile even at work.

"Someone is happy," Lin raised an eyebrow.

"I need to tell you something," Alexa felt guilty not telling her sooner. So they sat down at a secluded place, and she told her dear friend about Maggie. Lin was surprised but was smiling.

"Well, I would say about time!" Lin grinned.

"Sorry for not telling you sooner," Alexa said.

"It's ok. I get it. It's new. You don't know anything," Lin smiled reassuringly, which put Alexa's heart at ease.

After a while, Alexa was back at her workstation. She was getting a headache; she didn't know why. It was probably that time of the month. Then, someone called her name, which caught her attention. She looked up to see Mack, The head of the department. Beside him was a lady about the same age as Maggie.

"Alexa, this is Ms. Jia Huang, daughter of the co-founder of our company Mr. Huang," he introduced them.

"Hello, I'm Alexa Scott. Nice to meet you," they shook hands.

"Mack, can I stay here for a bit? I'm tired," Ms. Huang told him, and he nodded and left.

"So, Alexa tell me about yourself," she asked.

"There's nothing much to tell. I got on the plane when I got this job," Alexa smiled politely. Her head was throbbing at this point. Then Ms Huang made a lot of small talk. Apparently, she was more prosperous than Maggie because Maggie did a lot of charity without using her name. That sounded like her girl - Alexa smiled fondly at the thought.

"Hello, Alexa to earth!" Ms. Huang waved before her eyes, and she looked up to see half of her boobs popping out. She quickly averted her eyes. They did some more small talk, but Ms Huang seemed a little frustrated, and Alexa had no idea why. Ms Huang kept looking at the door as if she was waiting for someone. Alexa didn't bother asking as her head was killing her at that point.

She couldn't bear the pain anymore. She took a leave for the half-day and started for her home. Not forgetting to text Maggie that she was going home. She didn't know why she felt like she should. She was shivering. Maybe a fever was due. Just great! She just took a hot shower and plopped on the bed. She was starving, but she wasn't in the mood to eat anything. She tried to close her eyes for a bit.

Meanwhile, Ma watched Jia interact with Alexa on her laptop, and she had a knot in her stomach watching their interaction. Jia kept looking at the camera, which Alexa would notice at any moment. Maggie was soon pulled into a meeting. The uneasy feeling in her stomach didn't go away. What if Jia went back to her old ways of stealing the person she liked? She told herself that Jia had redeemed. But she was scared. And, to put a cherry on the top, Alexa had just texted her that she was going home. Maggie couldn't get through Jia's phone. Were they going home together? She forcefully pushed the thought out of her head.

"Lilly, I can't get any of them!" She said frustratedly on the phone.

"Well, I told you it was a bad idea in the first place!" Lilly yelled back.

"What do I do?"

"Catch them red-handed!" her sister's idea scared her sometimes, but she decided to go with it.

She saw the security backing off as she started the car, probably because of her resting bitch face. But she was sure they would follow her to death. She reached Alexa's home within 30 minutes and probably earned a few tickets. But she couldn't be bothered with it at that moment. She was a woman on a mission!

She rang Alexa's doorbell. No one answered. The knot in her stomach was giving her a bad feeling. She banged on the door and nothing. Just then, she got a text from Jia, "Sorry I got pulled into something. Alexa didn't even look at me properly. I feel insulted." She smiled at the text. But then, she was out of excuses. Alexa dramatically opened the door right on her face.

"Maggie?" Alexa asked weakly. God, she looked like a mess. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she had damp bed hair.

"What are you doing here?" she asked again.

"I was just checking up on you," Maggie lied through her teeth.

"Well, please come in," Alexa invited her inside.

"God, you look like a mess," Maggie felt helpless seeing her little lover suffering.

"And I wish you didn't come. I hate that you saw me as a mess," Alexa pouted.

"No, silly, I'm glad I got here," Maggie cupped her face, and she was burning.

"God, you're burning!" Maggie was shocked. Alexa gave her a weak smile and sat down on the couch. Probably being too weak to stand. She closed her eyes, tilting back her head. Someone knocked on the door.

"Please get that," she asked politely.

An old lady, probably 80, barged into the house as Maggie opened the door. She looked at her with questions in her eyes, but soon she turned her attention to Alexa. She soon got her and checked for her temperature. She had brought a kettle full of tea.

"Al, meet Maggie. Maggie, this is Al," Alexa introduced them.

"Hello," Maggie said softly. Again, she felt uneasy; she didn't know why.

"Did you eat wasabi?" Al asked Alexa. God damn it - Maggie curses internally. She had it in Maggie's place, but she didn't say anything. Maybe she didn't realize it because it was masked by other spices.

"You have an allergic reaction to wasabi?" She spoke softly, sitting beside her and holding her arm. Alexa just shook her head.

"I know she likes you. Please be kind to her. She has seen a lot," Al told Maggie in Cantonese as she was leaving. Maggie smiled reassuringly at her, but she was confused about what Al was saying.

"And you! Eat and rest!" Al commanded Alexa, and she nodded like a small child. Then, Al left, giving Maggie a slight squeeze on the hand.

"Why didn't you tell me you were allergic to wasabi?"

"Sure. Talk about allergies and diseases on your date!" Alexa rolled her eyes.

"But you could tell me when it was on your food," Maggie said out loud.

"Shh... It didn't seem polite," she shushed, holding her head. She had a nasty headache.

"Come, let's make you eat something," Maggie pulled her out of the couch.

"Hey, I can take care of myself," Alexa protested like a child.

"Let me," Maggie gave her best puppy eyes, and she knew Alexa was a goner at that.

Maggie was spooning Alexa, and the latter's breathing was even in minutes. The fever wasn't still down. Maggie couldn't even call anyone to ask for help as her dad would send the cavalry. The best she could do was to take care of her sick lover. Finally, she got a call from Lilly and got up quietly to talk to her. She explained her situation, and Lilly was laughing.

"No!" Suddenly she heard a scream, which made her heart churn. She ran to the bedroom and saw Alexa trying to break free from something as if she was shackled. She ran to Alexa and shook her awake.

"Alexa! Baby, wake up!" Maggie shook her to end her pain.

Alexa woke up, looked confused, and saw the surroundings to confirm where she was. She calmed down. Her t-shirt was drenched with sweat.

"Sorry," she said softly.

"Don't be. I'm here. Let's change your t-shirt," Maggie said, going through her drawers.

"Hey, I need privacy to change," Alexa protested.

"Nothing that I've not seen before," Maggie smirked, making Alexa blush.

She made Alexa change into a sweatshirt. As Maggie hugged her to sleep, she could feel Alexa's heart beating faster. Whatever that night terror was, it wasn't something good. But Maggie decided not to talk about it, for that moment. Some day they would have to talk about things, and she didn't know if it was something their relationship could endure.
