1-4 Patriarch, the Young Master Is a Drug Dealer?! Swipe Right for Enlightenment [Xianxia] [Comedy]

Chapter 1 – In Laws

"My name is… wait, what's my name again?" A young man floated in a swirling void, unable to remember anything but a single, final moment of his life.

"I died, huh," he murmured, an emptiness washing over him.

He looked around, trying to make sense of the formless void surrounding him. "Is this heaven… or hell?" he wondered aloud.

A distinct chime—a sound he'd never heard before—echoed through the silence, and a faintly glowing, semi-transparent panel appeared before him.

[Congratulations! You have been chosen!]

[Restoring the host's memories!]

[Memory restoration completed!]

The young man winced, clutching his head as a flood of memories—his own memories—crashed through his mind. His life, from the beginning to the end, played out in his head, and he could only manage a wry smile.

"Uh, Mr. Angel… or Mr. Demon, I guess? Are you taking me to heaven or hell?" he asked, staring at the system window. Reaching out, he was surprised to find it felt almost solid under his fingertips.

[The system is neither a demon nor an angel, and we're not heading to heaven or hell.]

Confused, he asked, "Then… where are we going?"

[Should the host agree to the system's conditions, the host will be reincarnated in the Sacred Martial World.]

His ears perked up, and an excited smile broke out on his face. Something he'd never thought possible was unfolding before his eyes.

"Um, what conditions?" he asked hesitantly.

[Determining the host's previous profession…]

[Analysis complete!]

[The host was a low-level drug dealer.]

Jason felt a mix of embarrassment and offense. He'd expected better from this mystical force.

[The following conditions apply to the host's reincarnation:]

• The Sacred Martial World is a cultivation world; however, the host may only begin cultivating once they reach half of their lifespan.

• The host must continue their current profession and is required to strive to reach the peak of it in the Sacred Martial World.

• The host may only sell their own products.

• Each product must be sold at or below its production value, unless the customer offers a higher price on their own accord. The host will face a random punishment if they intimidate, harass, or pressure a customer into paying more.

• The host must regularly complete system-assigned tasks and missions or suffer consequences.

• The host is forbidden from revealing the system's existence to anyone.

Jason read through the list and found he didn't have any major objections.

"What happens if I decline?" he asked.

[The host will be sent to the afterlife for judgment.]

Jason's face reddened. Although he hadn't committed any unforgivable sins, he wasn't exactly a model candidate for paradise, either. This offer wasn't exactly his dream job, but getting a second chance was far better than whatever judgment awaited him.

Resolving himself, Jason nodded. "I agree to the conditions!"

[The host's pact has been acknowledged!]

[Commencing transfer to the Sacred Martial World!]

An irresistible wave of drowsiness hit him, and his eyelids grew heavy as he drifted deeper into the endless abyss.

"Finally, I'm done," Han Rui whispered with satisfaction, a radiant smile playing on his quivering lips as his clear eyes moved from one thick tome to another. The azure crystal in the small room, barely twenty feet in size, bathed the space in a soft light. Apart from a simple table and chair, the room was devoid of furniture. Instead, tomes of various shapes, sizes, and colors, some piled neatly in stacks, others strewn randomly on the floor.

Standing up, Han Rui yawned and stretched, the smile still firmly on his face. He wore a simple, yet luxurious burnt orange robe cinched with a black sash around his waist.

"I can't believe it took me seven years to reach this point," he mumbled softly, his body emitting odd creaks as he stretched. "I've never been the bookish type, but I'm glad I persevered. Now, nothing is holding me back." Han Rui erupted into a bout of sly laughter that contradicted his youth and handsome appearance.

Without hesitation, he moved towards the exit. The seemingly ordinary wooden door opened on its own, and Han Rui stepped out, full of vigor. Before him lay an expansive forest, stretching as far as the eye could see. The small, windowless cabin stood at the center of the forest. Gentle winds, carrying a minty aroma, tousled Han Rui's charcoal black hair, and the sun's rays fell on his seemingly delicate, pale skin.

"I can't remember the last time I didn't have the smell of books lingering in my nose," Han Rui said, inhaling deeply. "This is refreshing, but it's time to go back now."

He retrieved a small coin from his inner robe, lifting it high into the air. "Elder Yifeng, I'm ready to leave now!" Han Rui shouted at the top of his voice, closing his eyes. A light beam descended from the tranquil heavens, striking the gold coin. Instantly, a warm, azure wisp of energy coated Han Rui's body, and he disappeared in a flash.

Opening his eyes once more, Han Rui found himself in a small room enclosed with stone walls. He chuckled, "I didn't puke this time. It seems my body has finally gotten used to it." He looked around the empty room for a moment before approaching the steel door.

Please let the hall be empty. Please let the hall be empty. Please let the hall be empty, Han Rui silently prayed, crossing his index and ring fingers. With a gentle push, the door noiselessly swung open, revealing an expansive hall filled with people all dressed in identical burnt orange robes. The moment Han Rui stepped out, everyone stopped in their tracks, deliberately forming a path on either side of the entrance.

"Welcome back, young master!" they shouted in unison, each person bowing.

An awkward smile graced Han Rui's lips.

Han Rui sighed. "You don't have to do this; you can all go about your business," he said, but the hall remained deathly silent, everyone maintaining their bowing position.

These obstinate cultivators haven't changed at all. They don't listen to anything I say. For many people to have come here on such short notice, surely word would have reached Grandfather already, Han Rui sighed again.

Walking in silence, Han Rui's gaze lingered on the colossal statues portraying various magical creatures vanquished by the heroes of the Han Clan.

Abruptly, a caustic voice invaded Han Rui's ears. "So, you're finally out. Took you long enough."

Another sigh escaped Han Rui's lips. Why did this guy have to be here?

Forcing a smile, he faced the young man standing at the end of the hall. He wore the traditional robes of the Han Clan, but unlike Han Rui and the others, his robes had white embroideries depicting a roaring dragon on the back and a miniature dragon around the chest.

"I'm honored you'd go out of your way to welcome me. I thought you'd be in the Martial Hall," Han Rui said with a smile.

Han Yulong's brows furrowed, and his smile disappeared. "Don't say nonsense. Do you think I'd be here if I had a choice?"

Both men shared striking features, but Han Yulong possessed a more robust physique and an authoritative demeanor, giving the impression of a human weapon crafted by the gods.

"Then, my dear cousin, why are you here?" Han Rui asked uncertainly.

A mischievous smile played on Han Yulong's lips as he motioned with his index finger. "Come with me, and you'll find out."

Han Rui furrowed his brows. Did something happen while I was gone?

"What are you dillydallying for? There's no time to waste," Han Yulong scowled. Han Rui quickened his pace, approaching the hulking cultivator with a smile.

What are they feeding this guy, though? He has grown taller again. What sort of genes did he inherit? Han Rui pondered, stealing glances at his cousin.

Han Yulong was sixteen but already taller and stronger than many seasoned cultivators in the Han Clan.

To think there was a time I could still slap the top of his head. Is this what it's like to unlock your potential? Han Rui wondered silently as he exited the hall with Han Yulong. Only then did the bowing cultivators raise their heads before proceeding with their tasks.

Meanwhile, at the hall's entrance, Han Rui and Han Yulong descended an impressive flight of pristine stairs while locked in conversation. "So, are you going to tell me what's going on, or are you going to keep me in suspense?" Han Rui asked, unable to quell his curiosity.

A wicked smile graced Han Yulong's face. "Did all the books you were reading make you stupid or what? Or did you forget you ran away from your duties?"

An awkward smile appeared on Han Rui's lips as he scratched the back of his head. "So, grandfather—"

Han Yulong interrupted, "Patriarch. You'll address him as that. He's my grandfather too, but you don't see me going around saying that."

"All right. So, the patriarch and elders sent you to get me, right?"

Han Yulong nodded. "Good, your brain is still working, it seems. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have let a lazy bum like you do as you pleased, but alas." The brown eyes of the towering youth lit up as he continued, "That's not all, by the way."

Han Rui's expression soured, furrowing his brows. "There's more?"

"An envoy from the Su Clan arrived yesterday," Han Yulong said with a teasing grin. However, Han Rui cocked his head backward, unable to conceal his confusion. The Su Clan was a renowned clan, even the Han Clan couldn't rival them. Everyone in the Celestial Ridge knew about them, but Han Rui couldn't fathom why Han Yulong would inform him about the Su Clan. Seeing Han Rui's puzzled look, Han Yulong froze in his steps. Stupefaction washed over him, but anger soon distorted the features of the large youth.

"You rotten bastard. You've forgotten, haven't you."

"Forgotten what? I don't understand what you mean. I know about the Su Clan, but what's their arrival got to do with me?" Han Rui said.

Han Yulong clattered his teeth, thick veins distorting his forehead. "You little..." he paused, taking deep breaths to calm his rising temper. "Forget it, I have nothing to say to you. I'll just patiently watch the show," he said as he continued descending the stairs.

This time, Han Rui paused in his steps. What's gotten that little shithead riled up? Did I do something to the Su Clan? Han Rui pondered for a moment, but nothing came to mind. Forget it. I'll find out soon enough.

Han Rui quickened his pace, catching up with Han Yulong, who wouldn't bother speaking to him anymore. The duo silently descended the stairs while acknowledging the greetings of several cultivators along the way. In less than ten minutes, Han Rui and Han Yulong reached the end of the massive staircase. There, a levitating steel carriage adorned with runic patterns and ornate crystals awaited the duo.

A group of men in black robes, with faces covered with white cloth, regarded the two men.

"Welcome back, young master," Han Xingwei, the leader of the guards, bowed gently. Then, he turned toward Han Yulong. "Young master, the elders are becoming impatient. We must return now."

"I know. We would have gotten here sooner if this blockhead focused more on cultivating than reading some useless books," Han Yulong hissed as he turned toward Han Rui.

"You heard him. So, get your ass in there."

"Wait, you're not coming along with me?" Han Rui asked. Han Yulong snorted while rolling his eyes. "Do you think everyone is as unambitious as you are? Coming here has already taken valuable time from my cultivation. I would rather not waste any more time on trivial matters. Goodbye, I won't be seeing you around." Han Yulong shooed the young man away while tapping on the jade ring on his right index finger.

A majestic silver sword coated in azure qi appeared, and the cultivator mounted the sword, taking to the skies and disappearing in a flash. Meanwhile, Han Rui wore a dry smile as he watched the hulking cultivator disappear into the distance.

That mouth of his is going to get him in trouble one day. How did such a cute little guy turn into that? Puberty, huh. Han Rui slowly shook his head as he averted his gaze to the levitating carriage.

"Young master, please, we must hurry. The guests from the Su Clan are becoming impatient," Han Xingwei reminded, gesturing toward the carriage.

"Yeah, let's leave. By the way, do you have any idea why the Su Clan sent an envoy?" Han Rui approached the carriage, and a retractable staircase made of condensed qi appeared.

Han Xingwei hesitated for a moment. "I don't know the intricacies, but their visit this time is in regard to the young master's matter."

Han Rui froze on the second step. "Huh? What are you talking about? I don't have any business with the Su Clan."

Han Xingwei tilted his head to the side, and so did his subordinates who had remained silent. The guard spoke up after a momentary silence, "Young master, that's Miss Liren's clan."

"Who?" Han Rui asked without pause.

Han Xingwei and a few guards staggered backward for a moment, their eyes seemingly bulging behind their coverings.

"Young master, Miss Liren is your fiancée. Please tell me you remember," Han Xingwei spoke slowly, still stunned by Han Rui's previous question.

"I have a fiancée?" Han Rui muttered softly, but loud enough for the guards to hear him.

Han Xingwei and his companions staggered, their lips quivering underneath their masks.

As if recalling a random thought, Han Rui continued, "Oh. I remember grandfather mentioned something about that a while back," Han Rui nodded as the conversation returned to him. "But why are they here? The marriage shouldn't be taking place until we're both twenty, right?" Han Rui pondered out loud.

Han Xingwei and his companions exchanged glances, unable to utter a word.

I knew the young master was eccentric, but how can he forget his fiancée? Is the young master going to be okay? The Su Clan won't let him off easy if he does something crazy, Han Xingwei mused.

"Young master, we really must hurry. The patriarch and the elders will become furious if we delay any longer," Han Xingwei said with a bow.

"Oh, yeah. I got lost in my thoughts for a moment. Let's go. I am quite eager to see this fiancée of mine. It was nice of them to make the trip all the way here," Han Rui said as he entered the carriage. The door closed behind him, and the carriage slowly rose into the air.

The black-clothed guards retrieved their flying swords from their space rings; they too, took to the skies.

In a flash, the procession disappeared into the horizon.

A moment later, Han Rui arrived outside the main hall of the Han Clan. He stood in front of an impressive dual stone statue depicting roaring coiling dragons. However, Han Rui focused on the wooden door manned by several guards in black robes. Like the stone statue, the door was tastefully carved to resemble the head of a roaring dragon.

"Welcome back, young master," a guard said with a courteous bow. "The patriarch and the elders are waiting for you inside."

"Hmm. Please announce my arrival," Han Rui said as he took a subtle whiff of his clothes, wrinkling his face. It would have been nice if they allowed me to freshen up first, but oh well.

He readjusted his clothes, and the roaring entrance parted at the center, forming a small opening. Han Rui took gentle strides through the opening, a gentle but cold wind waving his clothes. An artistic paradise teeming with an assortment of profound and rare paintings lined the spotless walls, while several illumination crystals embedded in the marble pillars brightened the hall.

Han Rui ignored the beauty of the hall, instead focusing on the people occupying the luxuriously carved seats, especially the aged man occupying the main seat.

"I greet the patriarch and the elders," Han Rui said with a deep bow.

Han Xianlong, the esteemed patriarch of the reputable Han clan, stroked his long goatee as he lazily stared at the bowing young man. Although the vastitude of time had claimed most of the man's handsomeness, there were still traces of a once-dashing figure left on his chiseled face. So much so that no cultivator in the hall could compete with the gallant man in demeanor or aura.

"So, you finally left that place," Han Xianlong grumbled, not bothering to hide his displeasure.

Han Rui wore a bashful smile as he raised his head, "A fairy came to my dreams last night. She told me how much you missed me, grandfather. How dare I not come to visit you after that?"

Han Xianlong interjected, "Shut up, I'm not falling for that again." His grip firmed around his armrest as he muttered, "What did I do to have a shameless rascal like you for a grandson?"

"Ahem, Patriarch, please don't forget about our guests," an elder whispered via qi message. Han Xianlong reined in his emotions, turning toward the five-man group in amethyst and snow-white robes.

The group, which comprised three guards, a middle-aged man with a refined aura, and a lady wearing an enlarged hat which covered her face, either silently drank tea or pretended not to notice the confrontation between Han Rui and Han Xianlong.

I totally forgot about them… Han Xianlong coughed slightly as he beckoned toward Han Rui.

"Your in-laws have come a long way; won't you greet them?" Han Xianlong said while waving his sleeve. A condensed qi wave wrapped around Han Rui, carrying him toward the Su clan's envoy.

Han Xianlong then turned his attention toward the refined middle-aged man leading the Su clan envoy, "Elder Mingdao, my grandson is here. Can you reveal the purpose of your visit now? Surely you won't keep up this needless suspense."

"I dare not, Patriarch Xianlong," Su Mingdao said with a warm smile, both fists cupped. Then, he regarded Han Rui for a moment, and his smile became brighter.

"Young master, I'm glad you've grown quite healthy. You have the aura of a seasoned scholar," he said.

"Thank you for the compliments," Han Rui said with a smile.

However, a deathly silence filled the hall. There was no greater insult to a cultivator than being regarded more for their smarts than martial prowess or cultivation. The seven elders from the Han family wore deep frowns while Han Xianlong remained indifferent.

"Elder Mingdao, did you make the long journey here just to compliment my grandson?" Han Xianlong said softly. However, the members of the Su procession stood at alert, a sense of unease washing over them.

"P-Patriarch Xianlong, I sincerely didn't mean any disrespect. I apologize if my words offended you in any way; it was certainly not my intention," Mingdao said with a bow.

"Enough!" Han Xianlong slammed his fists against his chair, and a deep hum accompanied by scorching heat burst across the hall. "I've entertained this charade long enough. Tell me why you're here and why you wanted my grandson to be here for it, too."

Su Mingdao waved his sleeves, and qi instantly covered the bodies of his companions. "Patriarch Xianlong, please calm down," Su Mingdao said, his brown eyes lingering on Han Rui, who winced under the qi torrent, "We don't want any incidents."

Han Xianlong snorted, but the qi torrent disappeared. Han Rui barely managed to stop himself from falling when Su Mingdao's voice filled the room, "Patriarch Xianlong, I was specially dispatched here to deliver a letter," he said as a sealed letter appeared from his space ring.

Qi coated the letter, and it flew toward Han Xianlong.

"The letter was personally written by the patriarch," Su Mingdao said as Xianlong unsealed the letter with his qi. Instantly, Han Xianlong's features changed as he stood up. Fire engulfed the letter, but it remained intact.

"What's the meaning of this?" Xianlong roared, rage distorting his visage.

The elders quickly approached the enraged patriarch, and Xianlong passed the letter to them. One after the other, their visages soured, and rage quickly distorted their faces.

"Elder Mingdao, is this some sort of joke?" Han Wudi, the first elder of the Han clan, asked.

Unlike the other elders and Xianlong, he reined in his emotions, patiently awaiting Su Mingdao's words.

Elder Mingdao bowed gently while cupping his fists, "Patriarch Xianlong, elders, please forgive me, but I can't satisfy your curiosity." The middle-aged man paused for a moment, glancing at Han Rui before continuing, "As stated in the letter, the Su clan would like to humbly cancel the engagement between the young miss and young master Han Rui. It's fine if the Han clan publicly announces that the young master was the one who initiated the divorce, and we're also willing to compensate you immensely for this—"

"Do you think my clan is that lacking that we would sully our reputation for mere benefits!" Han Wudi roared, qi covering the feeble frame of the elder.

"So, this is how the Su clan handles its promises. To bring such shame to us via a mere letter," Han Xianlong gritted his teeth as he continued. "Not only that, but you also had the audacity to bring some random wench along with you to take the place of that rotten bitch from your clan."

Su Mingdao's features soured, rage filling his eyes. However, it only lingered for a moment. "Patriarch Xianlong, I understand your anger. But Meixue isn't in any way lacking compared to young master Han Rui—"

"I don't want to hear it!" Xianlong roared, and the illusion of a roaring dragon formed behind the old man.

"The Su clan has finally revealed their true colors. Even Tianyi didn't have the courtesy to come here to tell me to my face; it shows how little your Su clan regards my family. I refuse to be insulted just because my son isn't here anymore. I would rather—"

"Grandfather, please let me handle this," Han Rui interjected from the side. Instantly, all eyes turned toward the young man who didn't exude a wisp of qi.

"Rascal, this isn't a matter you can interfere in. Your reputation and that of the family are at stake here," Han Xianlong chided.

"Grandfather, please trust me," Han Rui said softly, his voice laced with an otherworldly confidence. The cultivators from the Su clan exchanged glances, unable to predict what would happen next. Amid the silence, Han Rui approached elder Mingdao in gentle steps, pausing three feet away.

"Elder Mingdao, can I ask for the reason why Su clan is determined to cancel the engagement?" Han Rui asked calmly.

Su Mingdao met Han Rui's limpid eyes. There's no point hiding this matter since it will be well known soon enough.

"Young master, the young miss has been accepted as the true disciple of the Heavenly Immortal Pavilion," Mingdao said.

Silence graced the hall as surprise covered the faces of the old men. The only sects permitted to use the title 'Immortal' in their names were those who have produced countless immortals across the ages. Su Liren being accepted as the true disciple of such a sect was beyond the comprehension of all the elders gathered and all but guaranteed that Su Liren had the potential to become an immortal someday.

"Oh? That's it? That's all right," Han Rui said while nodding.

This time, Su Mingdao, Su Meixue, and the three guards cocked their heads backward, doubting they heard what they heard.

Does this brat even understand what the Heavenly Immortal Pavilion represents? Elder Mingdao mused silently. Before he could echo his thoughts, Han Rui spoke up again, his index finger pointed at Su Meixue, "So, if I'm understanding you, you'll compensate us for breaking the engagement and she'll also be given to me as a concubine?"

Wait, is this brat considering accepting the offer? This is turning out better than I anticipated. Wasn't he supposed to be some sort of literary prodigy? Does he realize what he's about to do? I can understand why Xianlong isn't interfering, but why are the other elders silent? Did they resign to their fate after hearing about the Heavenly Immortal Pavilion? Different questions flashed across Su Mingdao's mind as he nodded in acknowledgment to Han Rui's question.

"Fantastic," Han Rui said as he retrieved a small parchment from his inner robe.

"Elder, do you perhaps have something I can write with?" Han Rui asked while searching for a brush.

Mingdao exchanged glances with the guards, each unable to hide their confusion. One guard retrieved a brush from his space ring, politely passing it over to Han Rui. In silence, Han Rui approached a vacant seat and began scribbling on the paper.

Three minutes later, he returned with a bright smile on his face. "Pardon me for the delay, elder. Please receive this," he said, presenting the paper to the confused man.

"Um, young master, what is this supposed to be?" Mingdao frowned, unable to make sense of the items written on the paper.

What the hell is a Screaming lily and blue-black avaes? This little bastard also asked for the blood essence of rank 1 demon beasts. Is this some sort of recipe? Mingdao pondered silently, his gaze roaming past the thirty items listed.

"That's our compensation, of course," Han Rui answered without pause.

"Young master, you shouldn't make such distasteful jokes. Do you speak for—"

"Elder, did you ask my grandfather if he's against it? Do you think he would remain silent if he didn't agree?" Han Rui interjected.

Mingdao turned toward Xianlong and the elders, and as Han Rui said, none of them raised any objections. But their expressions still echoed the resentment in their hearts.

Mingdao's grip firmed around the paper, and a smile parted his lips, "Young master, although I don't recognize the majority of items listed here, they will be delivered a fortnight from now."

"Fantastic," Han Rui said with a smile as he clapped. "The next batch will be ready by then."

"Huh? This isn't everything?" Mingdao asked.

"C'mon, how would those little things compensate for the humiliation we're going to suffer? Is elder suggesting the Han clan's face is only worth a few blood essences and some random herbs?" Han Rui asked, his brows furrowed.

"O-Of course not. The patriarch has already given permission to fulfill any requests your clan might have," Mingdao reassured with a smile.

"That's good. We'll be looking forward to it," Han Rui said before turning his attention to Su Meixue.

"I believe she won't be going back with you, right?"

Su Mingdao cast a sideways glance toward Meixue, "No, young master. If you're pleased with her, she'll remain here."

Han Rui laughed softly, "That's even better. I believe this was quite productive, don't you think so, elder."

"I share the same opinion, young master," Mingdao said with a smile. "Young master, I'll be taking my leave now. I need to report the details of our discussion to the clan as soon as possible. The earlier we leave, the likelihood of those items getting here sooner."

"Oh, I totally understand, elder. It's a shame you can't stay here for long but have a great trip back. I'll look forward to the good news," Han Rui declared with a bright smile. Su Mingdao announced his intentions to leave to the leaders of the Han clan, but unlike with Han Rui, hostile glares greeted his announcement. However, the middle-aged cultivator exited the hall in haste along with his guards.

Another group of guards escorted Su Meixue out of the hall, leaving Han Rui and the upper echelon of the Han clan alone in the hall. Once again, silence graced the hall. This time, however, Han Rui strolled toward a vacant seat before sitting down. He sighed deeply before turning his attention toward the patriarch and elders, "It has been a while since we gathered like this. I'm eager to hear your reports. I hope I won't be disappointed."

Chapter 2 - Rewards

Han Rui sported a gentle smile, lazily drumming his fingers on the wooden armrest. His gaze shifted from one elder to another, lingering on Han Xianlong for a few seconds.

"Rui'er, forgive me for shouting at you earlier," Xianlong said with a bashful smile. "We had to maintain the charade," he explained.

Han Rui chuckled softly, waving his hand. "I understand, grandfather. You know I'm not one to bother about such trivialities." Han Rui regarded the man for a moment, nodding approvingly as he sized him up. "Grandfather, it seems you had another breakthrough not too long ago. Congratulations."

Xianlong burst into laughter, a tinge of embarrassment dying his cheeks red. "I'm glad you noticed. I couldn't have done it without your help," he said, motioning toward the other elders. "The elders have all made multiple breakthroughs since the last meeting." He suddenly paused, unleashing a dense qi barrier that covered himself, the elders, and Han Rui. Then, the patriarch continued, "Our ancestor has also made a significant breakthrough. Unfortunately, he must spend more time consolidating his cultivation. Please don't be disappointed he isn't in attendance."

"Oh, that's okay. I totally understand," Han Rui said with a smile. He then turned his attention to the shortest elder among the group, and the cultivator froze. "Sixth elder, I ran into Yulong while coming here. Why does it feel like his cultivation hasn't improved at all?" Han Rui asked calmly.

Elder Zhiyong collapsed on his knees while bowing. "I apologize on behalf of that idiot. We have used so many resources on him, and he still hasn't broken through to the core formation realm yet. I don't know where he got his ineptitude from, but don't worry," he said while raising his head. "I wedded a couple of concubines in the last six months. Soon enough, you'll have enough nephews that will live up to your expectations."

Han Rui wore a dry smile, not knowing what to say. He faced the second elder and continued, "Elder Qianyu, how has production been lately? Have you been able to distribute all the items?"

"Young master, the last of the items were successfully sold off a year ago, and as you instructed, the proceeds were invested in purchasing the herbs you listed. Our best hands are watching over them round the clock in the medicinal garden. I'll bring them over to your workshop as soon as you are ready," Qianyu said in one breath.

Han Rui's features lit up as he gently nodded. Then, he focused on Han Wudi. The first elder cupped his fists while wearing a dazzling smile, exposing his brown teeth. "Young master, I invested the proceeds from the sale as you instructed. We have been able to establish several shops within Celestial Ridge, and the yearly turnover surpasses our revenue from the past decades," Han Wudi said. However, his smile waned for a moment as he continued, "Unfortunately, our rapid expansion has caught the eyes of a few sects and vagabonds. However, nothing overly complicated has ensued so far."

"That's good. Please remember to keep me updated should the situation change," Han Rui said before diverting his attention to the fourth elder. The old man didn't wait for Han Rui before giving his report, "Young master, the development of the current generation is going better than we expected. In the past three years, we have recorded ten Nascent Soul advancements, Eighty-five Golden Core Formation advancements, and two hundred Core Formation advancements. Apart from that, we have been able to nurture numerous three-star alchemists and three-star weaponsmiths, among other professions."

The elder paused for a moment, confirming the integrity of the patriarch's barrier before continuing. "And as you instructed, none of them can he directly linked to the clan. However, their loyalty can't be questioned," the elder assured.

Han Rui grinned from ear to ear as his body trembled ever so slightly. He turned his attention to the last three elders. "Elders, how healthy is our finances?"

Han Rui waited with bated breath.

The three elders exchanged glances, and the third elder stepped forward. "Young master, our wealth has surpassed the combined wealth of the other renowned families," the old man said with a grin even bigger than Han Rui's.

Unable to contain himself, Han Rui stood up and roared excitedly.

At that very moment, a distinct chime echoed in the hall, audible only to Han Rui.

[Congratulations to the host for completing the assigned task!]

An even wider smile parted Han Rui's lips as he saw the system's message.

[The host has successfully assimilated the Immortal Alchemy Scriptures!]

[Calculating rewards…]

Han Rui bit his lower lip as he muttered, "Please grant me an extension, please grant me an extension, please grant me an extension..."

[Calculation completed!]

The host has received three thousand essence washing pills! The host has received three celestial ranked treasures! The host has received an Immortal level cultivation technique! The host has received a Celestial level cultivation technique! The host has received a Mystic level cultivation technique! The host has received twenty Celestial bones! The host has regained access to the item shop! The host has received three hundred fame points!Darn it! Han Rui cursed inwardly as he fell to his knees. Unlike before, tears streaked from the corners of his eyes as he read through the system's rewards.

Xianlong and the elders remained in their positions, staring at the murmuring young man.

"Patriarch, he is doing that thing again," the first elder said via a hidden whisper, unable to hide his excitement. He glanced at his companions, and they too were just as excited.

"I wonder what type of gifts he's going to give us this time," Xianlong muttered in anticipation.

Meanwhile, Han Rui remained in his kneeling position. "System, this is unfair!" he roared within himself. "I have been studying diligently for the past seven years; I deserve more than that, especially in my current condition!"

[The host can choose to fight a person of the system's choosing if the host isn't satisfied!]

[An opponent at the host's level will be chosen should the host wish to proceed!]

Han Rui shuddered in his position, and his frown quickly morphed into a smile. "C'mon, let's not go that far. We have been buddies for the past eighteen years, at least cut me some slack. You can do that, right, buddy?"

[The host can choose to fight a person of the system's choosing if the host isn't satisfied!]

[An opponent at the host's level will be chosen should the host wish to proceed!]

"You shameless bastard! Do you think I'll choose that after what happened the last time?" Han Rui roared as he recalled an unfortunate incident.

Seven years ago, the system had presented him with the same option, and he had naively accepted. Contrary to his expectations, the system had chosen a seemingly random cow to be his opponent. However, what the system hadn't told him was that the seemingly random cow possessed abilities surpassing the ancestors of some small sects.

[Is the host perhaps lacking confidence?]

[The host cannot attain anything with cowardice! Be a man and fight for opportunities!]

Han Rui gritted his teeth as he stared at the flashing notification. "I'm satisfied with my rewards," he said.

[Apologies, the host's statement wasn't clear!]

If looks could kill, Han Rui would have murdered the neon blue panel several times over already.

"I said, I. Am. Satisfied. With. My. Rewards!"

[Congratulations! The host has received a physique for acknowledging their cowardice!]

[The host has received the Undying Immortal Body!]

[You're impervious to all Qi-based attacks; including external, internal, spiritual, and mental attacks!]

[Congratulations! By unlocking the Undying Immortal Body, you have unlocked the true heritage of a coward! Your lifespan has been significantly extended!]

[Host's current lifespan: 18/10,000,000,000,000!]

Han Rui's jaw dropped. "S-S-Sys…" Han Rui choked on his words as genuine hot tears streaked down his face.

[I'm happy the host is excited by their longevity!]

Han Rui's mouth opened further, "You promised me I was going to be able to cultivate once I reached a quarter of my lifespan. How can you shamelessly cheat me like this? This is a scam!"

[The system laughs at… I mean, haven't you heard that longevity, um, no. You have the Undying Immortal Body! You're the envy of all cultivators. Be proud!]

Han Rui grabbed the floating panel, slamming his fist repeatedly on its surface while hurling all manner of profanities. Xianlong and the elders watched the incredulous sight with grins, unable to hide the greed in their eyes.

A spark of inspiration suddenly filled the eyes of the young man as he paused his unrelenting attack. "System, that immortal body, it's impervious to all physical and mental attacks, right?"

[Yes!] The system affirmed.

A wicked smile suddenly flashed across Han Rui's face. "System, I want to challenge the rewards! Summon that fat bastard again; I want to have my revenge."

[Is the host certain they want to challenge their rewards?]

[The host will still have access to their current rewards set should they lose; however, a random penalty will be assigned to the host!]

"I'm ready," Han Rui affirmed with a nod.

[The host's decision has been acknowledged!]

[The host has five hours until the challenge begins!]

[Good luck!]

Han Rui's smile brightened as he gently stroked his chin. He stood up, and an embarrassed smile replaced his wicked grin as he regarded the old men.

"Forgive me for the ungraceful sight earlier. I was trying to figure out something," Han Rui said with a bashful smile.

Xianlong spoke first, "Rui'er, what are you talking about? I didn't see anything." With a puzzled face, he turned to the first elder, "Did you see anything?"

Han Wudi vigorously shook his head, "My eyesight has been failing me lately. Alas, this is one of the many pitfalls of being old," he said while sighing.

Xianlong then queried the other elders, and they too responded with the same answer. However, the greed in the eyes of the cultivators couldn't be masked despite their best intentions. Han Rui coughed dryly before reaching into his inner robes, "Grandfather, I have some items that might be useful to the clan," Han Rui said as he retrieved a small porcelain ring from his inner robes.

Neither Xianlong nor the elders could control their watering mouths and googly eyes as they stared at the seemingly ordinary ring. "Please have it," Han Rui said as he threw the ring, pretending not to notice the reactions of the old men.

Xianlong sent a burst of qi toward the ring, gently maneuvering the ring until it fell on his palm. At that same moment, the cultivators instantly channeled their senses into the ring, eager to confirm its contents.

Heavens! I knew it was going to be great, but how is this possible? Xianlong mused with his mouth open as he confirmed the items in the space ring. This ring is enough to start a bloody war across the realms, and Rui'er just casually gave it away?Xianlong couldn't help but stare at his grandson deeply.

Although he had been praised as a visionary leader, he knew the prosperity the clan enjoyed was all thanks to Han Rui's generosity.

"As always, you all can determine who needs them. However, anything that will bring unwanted attention toward us should be avoided until—"

"Until we have the means to protect ourselves," Han Xianlong said, completing Han Rui's statement.

"I'm glad you understand," Han Rui said with a smile. "I need to finish matters with the girl from the Su Clan, so I won't be able to chat for much longer. If there's anything that needs my attention, you know how to reach me," Han Rui said as he turned to leave.

"Rui'er," Xianlong called out suddenly, hesitating before he continued. "Do you want us to finish the matter with the Su Clan?"

Han Rui shook his head gently, "There really isn't much left to handle. I'll send a few more lists to you later; you can pass it over to whoever they send a fortnight from now."

"But young master, is this okay?" the seventh elder asked. "Neither Su Tianyi nor his daughter even bothered to come here personally; it shows how much they don't even respect us. I know I'm not supposed to get angry, but it's infuriating."

"I understand how you feel. Trust me, it wouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things. That they didn't bother to show up only means they believe we're not worthy of their time," Han Rui said as he chuckled. "Let them feel proud of themselves. We're not fishing in the same sea, after all," he added.

With a gentle wave, he bid the group goodbye as he approached the exit. However, he quickly paused in his tracks before rushing toward the elders.

"I almost forgot. I can't leave like this," Han Rui said. "There are people outside expecting me to be punished for sneaking away to the illusionary field. Do you still have that treasure I gave you the other time?" Han Rui said, staring at his grandfather.

A small shell appeared from Xianlong's space ring, and the old man instinctively tapped the top of the spiral shell. At that same moment, a voice mimicking the patriarch's emanated from the shell. "You stupid brat! How dare you disappear on your own accord! Get me my whip!"

"Grandfather, please have mercy—Ah!" The same treasure mimicked Han Rui's voice and scream, and the faux altercation echoed beyond the massive hall.

Meanwhile, Han Yulong and a group of youths, who had been spying on the main hall, couldn't stop themselves from laughing.

"I told you grandfather wouldn't let him off easy," Han Yulong said, grinning from ear to ear.

"We should return now," a young lady said. "We will be next if the patriarch finds out we are slacking off," she advised.

The group silently acknowledged her point, and they departed with alacrity.

Meanwhile, Han Rui's screams continued to fill the area, growing more miserable by the second. However, within the spacious hall, he lazily reclined in his seat while the third and fifth elders massaged his shoulders. The second and first elders immaculately controlled their qi to form a cooling breeze around the youth, while the seventh and sixth elders massaged Han Rui's feet. The fourth elder held a bowl filled with an assortment of fruits, passing them over to Han Rui at odd intervals via his qi control. Lastly, Han Xianlong sat next to Han Rui, his trembling hands holding onto the space ring he received earlier.

Son. Daughter-in-law. It's a shame you're not here to see this. I hope you have finally found peace in the afterlife. Rui'er is fulfilling the dream you strived so hard to accomplish, Han Xianlong thought to himself, sneaking glances at the smiling youth seated next to him.

Chapter 3 – Su Meixue

"Take care of yourself," Han Xianlong said, waving along with the elders as Han Rui departed toward the exit. Unlike before, smudges covered the face of the handsome youth, while several portions of his robes appeared scorched.

I can't wait for the day I don't have to maintain a low profile, Han Rui sighed softly as he limped toward the exit. The door silently parted, and the youth exited in slow and labored steps.

"Escort that rascal to his quarters!" Han Xianlong's voice thundered in the ears of the guards stationed outside.

In a flash, one guard approached Han Rui, "Young master, please let me escort you to your quarters."

Han Rui shook his head, "Take me to where the girl from the Su clan is staying," he said.

"No problem, young master," the guard said as he reached into his inner robe. He retrieved a small crimson pill before presenting it to the limping youth, "Young master, please swallow this. It will help with your injuries."

Han Rui grabbed the pill without hesitation, swallowing it whole. "Thank you," he said, as a modicum of energy washed over his face.

"Let's go. It will be rude to keep my guest waiting."

The guard nodded. Saying nothing further, he respectfully carried Han Rui, before disappearing into a ball of smoke. A moment later, Han Rui and the masked guard reappeared at the entrance of a luxurious building built at the center of a vibrant garden with its own lake.

Numerous flower petals listlessly floated on the pristine waters, swaying according to the whims of the elements.

"Young master, please let me know if you need further assistance," the guard said with a courteous bow.

"Thank you, but it would be unlikely. I'm already feeling much better. You may return to your station now," Han Rui said with a smile. The guard nodded, before disappearing in a flash. Meanwhile, Han Rui took a deep breath, the flowery fragrance filling his lungs.

In slow but deliberate steps, he approached the two-story manor. He paused at intervals to appreciate a few flowers, while also plucking a few petals for his own amusement.

Like most buildings in the Han estate, the manor was adorned with depictions of roaring dragons with several intricate wooden and stone carvings. A minute later, the youth stood in front of the imposing entrance made from an array of different woods grafted together.

"Miss Su, may I come in?" Han Rui said softly. Silence greeted his inquiry; however, the impressive wooden door slowly creaked open. The corners of Han Rui's lips curved upwards as he strolled into the manor. Ignoring the array of impressive furniture, art, and pottery. His limpid eyes landed on Su Meixue, who sat gracefully on a padded wooden chair while holding onto a steaming cup.

"Miss Su, I apologize for only coming now. I had some business with my grandfather and the elders," Han Rui said with an awkward smile. "May I join you?"

"Please do whatever you want, young master. I'm but a mere guest," Su Meixue said, her beautiful voice filling the room. Han Rui approached the table in quick strides before sitting in the vacant seat opposite the masked lady, and an awkward silence followed.

"Aren't you going to take that off?" Han Rui broke the silence. "I don't imagine it being comfortable."

"Thanks for your concern, young master. For your safety, it's best it remains on," Meixue said as she brought the steaming cup closer to her face. The region around her mouth blurred for a moment, revealing her plump, pink lips. She took a sip of the hot beverage before lowering the cup once more; and like before, the covering had returned to its original form.

"It seems you're practicing a complicated cultivation technique. I was quite curious to see how you look, but I can't blame any other person than myself for being weak," Han Rui said with a self-deprecating smile.

The youth reached into his inner robe before retrieving an oblong, opaque crystal. He gently placed it on the smooth table's surface, drawing the attention of the veiled lady as she briefly tilted her head to the side. The seemingly ordinary crystal exuded a pulsating crimson glow the moment it touched the table, but nothing else stood out about the item.

"Miss Su, aren't you going to ask what this is? Or do you know what it is?" Han Rui asked with a smile.

"If my guess is right, it should be a rare form of illumination crystal known for calming the mind and healing minor injuries," Meixue said confidently, but unable to hide her indifference.

Han Rui clapped, his smile turning even brighter, "As I expected. You're quite knowledgeable," he praised. "As you can see, I suffered quite a bit after you guys left. Thankfully, grandfather didn't go overboard," Han Rui laughed heartily. Then, he drummed his fingers on the cold table as he continued, "So, are you part of the main clan or someone from the branch family?"

"The main family," Meixue said after a brief pause.

"Oh, really?" Han Rui nodded slowly as his fingers tapped on the table. "I'm sure you know this already, but I'm not remotely proficient in matters related to cultivation." Han Rui paused as he chuckled softly, "However, I'm quite familiar with other worldly and esoteric matters. Although I might be a cultivating dunce, I'm not stupid. There isn't any record of a Su Meixue in the official records of the Su clan. I don't believe the Su clan would do something as despicable as sending some random person over here, right?" Han Rui asked with a smile.

Silence once again dominated the room; however, it only lasted a moment before Meixue spoke up.

"I was adopted ten years ago. While I'm indeed from the main family, I can understand why you wouldn't find me in any of the records," she explained while raising her cup to her mouth.

Oh. How convenient. It seems those guys planned this for quite a while, Han Rui mused as his fingers drummed on the table. He opened his mouth to speak, but the delicate voice of the masked lady cut him off midway, "Young master, you're much different from what they say about you."

Han Rui's brows shot up as he bent his head to the side, "Oh?" he chuckled. "What are the masses saying about me?"

"I wouldn't know about the opinions of the masses; however, I would say you're not what many people consider you to be," Meixue said, her voice calm and steady. "It would be difficult to believe that you're actually the son of the Valiant Dragon of the Han clan."

Han Rui exploded into laughter, reclining in his padded chair.

"Did I say something funny, young master?" Meixue asked.

"The fact you thought your pitiful attempt to rile me up would work is quite amusing," Han Rui teased with a smile.

"That was never my intention, young master. I only speak the truth as I see it," Meixue clarified in one breath.

"Well, either way, I really couldn't care what you or anyone else for that matter thinks of me. It's not my business what sort of ludicrous imaginations you all seem to have about me," Han Rui chuckled. "It's almost as if it's a crime to be normal," he added.

He readjusted his sitting position before he continued, "Everyone wanted to be associated with the Valiant Dragon when he was alive; and according to the stories I've heard, your Su clan practically did everything possible to ensure that our families would be united by marriage. Unfortunately, my parents would meet their demise barely six months after I was born; and like a wisp, fleeting to the touch, the general interest in the Han clan waned—"

Meixue interjected, "Young master, what are you trying to say? Nothing you have said is unfamiliar to me, and it's irrelevant at this point who decided to initiate the marriage pact. The only undisputable fact is that the Han clan can't be compared with the Su clan."

Han Rui nodded, "You're right, and that's exactly why you're here and not Su Liren. Or do you think it's a coincidence you were adopted by the Su clan?"

Meixue froze for a moment, before regaining her calm.

Han Rui, on the other hand, continued from where he left off, "I'm impressed to be honest. I never thought I'd be a victim of such a cliched situation. If my guess is correct, your elders would have probably canceled the marriage a long time ago if they could predict my lack of cultivating talents. I'm sure they must have been somewhat relieved when news of my scholarly prowess martialized at barely ten months old. Naturally, that wasn't enough to satiate a powerful cultivating clan. The more time passed, the more they realized they had indeed made a mistake." Han Rui paused; his limpid eyes focused on Su Meixue. Then, he suddenly pointed at the masked lady, "That's where you came in. Su Liren was too good to be tossed aside to a declining clan; no, she was much too talented to become the wife of a talentless hack."

Han Rui burst out laughing again, using one hand to cover his mouth. "They must be feeling ecstatic now that elder Mingdao has sent word of our willingness to cancel the marriage. I'm sure they never expected things to go that smoothly. The Su doesn't have to send someone as talented as Liren here, and they can still publicly announce that they fulfilled their promise of wedding their daughter to the Han clan. I'm sure they had prepared so many countermeasures should we have declined. I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't curious to see it play out."

For the first time, Su Meixue let go of the steaming cup. Although Han Rui still couldn't see her face, he could feel her piercing gaze land on him.

"Young master, is this your attempt to mock me?" She asked.

"Not at all," Han Rui chuckled. "I've simply echoed my theories. What benefits do I gain from mocking you?"

Su Meixue gracefully reached for her hat, and the mysterious item unraveled like living tentacles, revealing the face of the young woman. Han Rui froze in his position, his quivering eyes lingering on the upper right portion of her face, which seemed to be visibly rotting. Her round, turquoise, slit pupils burned with an uncanny fiery essence, while her silver-black hair cascaded down her shoulders.

The unsullied section of her face was covered in layered wax which bubbled at the perimeter of the decomposing half.

"I apologize for showing you such a sight, young master," Meixue said with a courteous bow. "I feel it's only right since you won't be yourself for a while."

Han Rui cocked his head backwards, "Huh?" What are you talking about?"

"Young master, I must admit, your analysis was remarkably on point," Meixue said as she stood up. She approached Han Rui, who remained seated, in slow steps, and only stopped when she towered over the man. "While your cultivation talents are indeed lacking, your intelligence is admirable," she said as she reached into Han Rui's inner robe. She rummaged for a few seconds but found nothing, then she removed her hand.

"Shouldn't you buy me dinner before attempting to feel me up?" Han Rui teased with a smile.

A faint grin appeared on Su Meixue's lips; her impassive gaze still fixed on Han Rui. "Perhaps another time, young master," she replied, her fingers gently caressing the youth's chin.

"Are you the reason I can't move? You know assassinating me is a foolish idea, right?" Han Rui said.

"You need not fear assassination, young master. However, the reason behind your immobility lies in your own actions. Accepting things from strangers, no matter how seemingly kind, is ill-advised," Meixue explained, maintaining her smile.

A look of realization crossed Han Rui's face, vividly recalling the guard who had given him a pill.

"Has the Su clan infiltrated the Han clan?" he muttered, fear palpable in his voice. "Did they send you to interrogate me? Perhaps your elders are interested in the sudden revival of our clan. Because I can't think of any other reason why you would do this."

"Indeed, you weren't lying about your intelligence," Meixue said. "The Han clan has undergone an extraordinary growth in recent years; my purpose is to unravel the mystery behind it and, if possible, transfer that knowledge back to the clan," she explained, delicately poking Han Rui's nose.

"You're the first person not to be repulsed by my appearance, and there's no pity in your eyes either. For that, I sincerely thank you," she said, her smile brighter than ever. "Do you have any final requests?"

Han Rui pondered for a moment before speaking, "Actually, I have a proposition for you. No, let's call it a wager."

Meixue's brows furrowed slightly. "What is it?" she asked, unable to quell her curiosity.

"It's simple, really. Since it has come to this, it's only fair that I gain something if I manage to alter the situation—"

Meixue's abrupt chuckle interrupted Han Rui's speech as she involuntarily covered her mouth.

"Young master, I understand you're attempting to stall for time, but it's futile. Then again, why would I indulge you in this wager? What benefit does it bring me? All your secrets and knowledge will soon be revealed, so I don't see the point of it." Su Meixue sighed, shaking her head.

"It might have been brief, but it has been a pleasure knowing you. Goodbye, young master," she said with a sweet smile.

A four-inch needle descended from her sleeves, and the surrounding temperature dropped. Frost covered the needle's tip, and an eerie purple liquid hovered just below the icy tip. Without hesitation, Meixue stabbed Han Rui's forehead, and a soul-churning screech escaped from his mouth.

Han Rui's eyes rolled inwards, his neck slumping to the side, drool escaping his parted lips. Su Meixue delicately retrieved a small crystal from her space ring, and it radiated with a crimson light as soon as it appeared.

Then, a familiar voice echoed, "Is it done?"

"Yes, elder. Are you on your way back?" Su Meixue asked.

"That's not important right now," Elder Mingdao said abruptly. "Use the crooked soul to begin the possession," he instructed. "Send a message as soon as you succeed. If by any chance you fail, you know what to do." Mingdao's voice disappeared, and the crystal shattered.

Meixue sighed deeply, refocusing on Han Rui. This time, she tapped her ring once more, and another crystal appeared. However, the transparent crystal was hollowed in the center. A tiny illusionary figure rampaged within it, using its bestial claws to slam against the crystal's walls.

Meixue stared at the crooked soul for a minute before returning her attention to the needle buried in Han Rui's skull. Unlike the other tip, a bubbling cerise hue dyed the pointed end.

"Any mistakes from here on could be catastrophic," Su Meixue muttered as she took a deep breath.

"In that case, do you need any help?"

"No, I'm good, young master—" Su Meixue reeled, the crooked soul falling out of her hand. The crystal cracked a little, to the delight of the rampaging soul trapped within, but it still couldn't free itself from its prison. However, Su Meixue's bulging eyes shifted between the impaled youth in the chair and the smiling young man standing next to her.

"H-How?" Her lips quivered as she squeezed out her words. A dagger appeared in the lady's hand, and she threw it toward Han Rui before he could reply. The dagger embedded itself into Han Rui's skull, and the young man fell backward with a thud. The smell of fresh blood soon filled the manor, as a pool of blood gathered under the fresh corpse.

Meixue remained in her position, her quivering gaze shifting between the two bodies. What's going on? How can there be two of him?

She inched closer to the second corpse, kicking it gently as if to confirm if it was real. The corpse's leg swayed to her kick, confirming its tangibility. Then, she turned toward the one sitting on the chair. This time, she retrieved a silver flying sword, poking it with the tip.

They're both real, but how is this possible? Su Meixue mused.

"Penny for your thoughts." Han Rui's voice once again echoed behind Meixue's ears.

The cultivator's eyes bulged as a crippling sensation crawled down her spine. She instinctively swung the flying sword to the left, and the sound of steel cutting through flesh filled the manor, and then another thud followed. The breathless and confused cultivator stared at the third corpse, whose blood had sullied the polished floors even further.

"How can this be?" she muttered.

"I'd tell you if you didn't go around killing all of us," another Han Rui answered.

Su Meixue screamed as the voice filled her ears, and she swung her sword again. This time, she decapitated another Han Rui. Then, she unleashed a frightening burst of speed toward the exit. However, the further she ran, the more distant the exit seemed. She paused in her tracks, and her visage soured.

I have been running with all my might, but I haven't taken more than three steps away from the fourth corpse. This can only be the work of a formation, but how did I get trapped in an illusion formation?she pondered while observing her surroundings. She believed that another Han Rui would soon reveal himself.

Footsteps soon echoed, and Su Meixue turned to the right.

"W-W-What?" she blurted out, staring at the figure approaching in delicate steps.

A fifth Han Rui didn't reveal himself; rather, she stared at another version of herself well equipped with a similar flying sword.

"Who are you, and why do you look like me?" Meixue asked with a frown.

"What do you mean who am I and why do I look like you? You're the one stealing my looks," the other Meixue scoffed, loss of words.

"No, I should be the one asking you that," she said.

Both ladies simultaneously raised their swords as they prepared to attack, with each believing themselves to be the original.

Meanwhile, outside the illusionary space, Han Rui reclined in his seat while fiddling with the crystal he took out from his inner robe earlier.

These cultivators are proper dumbasses. They all seem to lose their sense of reasoning when dealing with mortals. I always thought those novels were trolling, but these people really think mortals have brains the size of a cockroach. She didn't even bother questioning why I would bring out an illumination crystal suddenly, Han Rui sighed while shaking his head.

[It's almost as if you're complaining! I thought you wanted to be underestimated!]

Han Rui stared at the system's messages and could not help but chuckle, "Forget I said anything. I'm more interested in using the scan feature."

[Who or what do you intend to scan?]

Han Rui pointed at Su Meixue, who sat motionlessly with her hat still covering her face, "Her, of course, who else would I be talking about? Tell me her cultivating talent."

[Calculating fame points required for scan…]

[Calculation completed!]

[Ten fame points required for scan!]

"Use it," Han Rui said without hesitation.

[Commencing scan…]

[Scan completed!]

[Do you wish to see the results?]

"No, delete it," Han Rui said sarcastically, as he rolled his eyes. "Why else would I ask you to scan her if I didn't want to see the results—"

[The host has requested the results be deleted!]

"Wait, what?" Han Rui sat upright. "I was being sarcastic, damn it."

[You will have to pay another ten fame points to retrieve the scan!]

Han Rui bit his lower lip, his bloodshot eyes staring at the flashing system panel, "All right, I'll pay it."

[Error! The new retrieval price is now fifteen fame points!]

"Damn you, you shitty system! How did the price change just like that?" Han Rui roared.

[The new price is now seventy fame points!]

Han Rui dropped to his knees while bowing repeatedly to the floating panel, "I'm sorry. I won't do it again. I forgot my place and acted out. O wise system, please don't be upset by this foolish boy—"

[Wise and Handsome!]

"Yes, yes. O wise and Handsome system—"

[Wise, Handsome, Dependable, and Remarkable!]

The corners of Han Rui's eyes twitched, but he didn't dare to complain as he kowtowed, "O wise, handsome, dependable—"

[Start from the beginning!]

"I'm sorry, I won't do it again. I forgot my place and acted out. O wise, handsome, dependable, and remarkable system, please don't be upset by this foolish boy."

[I forgive you since it's coming from your heart! The results are in; do you want to see it?]

"Yes, sir," Han Rui said.

[Su Meixue Cultivation Talent]

Super Trash!

Not recommended.

Chapter 4 - Underling

Han Rui sighed as he slowly stood up, "Not bad, she's surprisingly better than some elders and a few of our rising stars. Maybe she's indeed worth investing in," Han Rui muttered softly.

[Why not look for someone with a better qualification?]

Han Rui rolled his eyes while shaking his head, "Super Trash is the highest qualification you have ever given anyone. Where am I supposed to find someone that you'd deem worthy?" he said with a sigh.

[It's not my fault my standards are high!]

Han Rui slyly rolled his eyes, "Yeah, sure." Then he continued, "I knew it was only a matter of time before the other clans started paying attention to us. To be honest, I expected them to have acted sooner. I need to prepare if I want to continue my easy life."

[Then again, do you really need her? She tried to kill you; you know?]

"I'm too lazy to find someone else," Han Rui explained dryly. "Her qualification is decent enough, and her status is high enough in the Su clan."

[So, how do you intend to go about it?]

Han Rui chuckled, a roguish smile parting his lips, "I'll use the carrot and stick approach, of course. She should already be reaching her limits within the illusion formation."

Meanwhile, within the formation, Su Meixue crouched while holding tightly to her now chipped flying sword. Although she bled profusely from multiple deep cuts, her limpid eyes roamed the area as if searching for someone or something. Unlike before, hundreds of dismembered corpses lay on the floor, painting the polished wood with a viscous hue.

How long have I been fighting? I can't tell the time anymore. I'll surely die if this continues.

Su Meixue tapped on her space ring, and a small pill appeared in her hand. Without hesitation, she swallowed the blood-smeared pill, and a wave of qi surged throughout her body.

That's my last qi restoration pill. I really need to find a way to leave this place, Meixue pondered silently as she stood up. She sprinted toward the exit again, unleashing a greater burst of speed.

"I can reach it," she muttered, unable to mask the joy in her eyes. The formation must be reaching its limit, she believed as she increased her running speed.

In a flash, she reached the exit. The blood-soaked cultivator kicked open the door, and a distinct crack akin to shattering glass echoed in the hall, and the world around her swirled, as if being devoured by a rampaging black hole.

"Hello? Aren't you going to wake up?" Han Rui's voice echoed within the mind of the cultivator.

That voice. Isn't that young master Han's voice?Meixue forced her labored eyes open, and a familiar sight greeted them. This time, the nauseating stench of fresh blood had dissipated, and there wasn't a mountain of mangled corpses surrounding her.

"Am I back?" Su Meixue muttered underneath her breath as she locked gazes with Han Rui through her hat. The young man wore a smile as he reclined casually in his seat. His right hand fiddled with the pulsating illumination crystal, while the other silently glided across the table's surface. She subconsciously turned toward the exit, no longer able to distinguish between reality and illusion.

Han Rui chuckled while readjusting his sitting position, "Don't worry, this isn't an—"

Meixue exploded out of her seat, and the needle appeared in her hand a second time. An intense qi wave gathered around its frosty tip as it raced toward Han Rui's neck. She thrust the needle with all her might, and a crisp clank echoed as the needle struck Han Rui's neck, shattering on the spot.

"What?!" Su Meixue blurted out; her quivering eyes focused on the nonchalant youth.

An ethereal weapon shattered just like that. How? Meixue took a step back, her eyes shifting between the remnants of the shattered needle and Han Rui, who wore a somewhat indifferent smile.

"You don't hesitate, huh?" Han Rui sighed as he stood up. "I have other engagements later, so let's make this quick."

Meixue turned to flee; however, a strange surge of qi wrapped around the cultivator, restricting her movement.

"Y-You can cultivate?" she stuttered as Han Rui approached.

"I wish," Han Rui sighed, shaking his head as he waved the pulsating illumination crystal. "It's a long story, but it's all thanks to this," he said, stopping a foot away from the masked lady. "Like I said, I have other engagements later on, so I hope you'll cooperate with me."

"Young master, while I admit your treasure is indeed spectacular, even if you torture me I won't—"

Han Rui interjected, "Whoa! Let me stop you right there." He pressed his thumb on the illumination crystal, and an azure glow filled the room, transforming it into a grassy paradise stretching as far as the eyes could see. Then, Han Rui continued, "I have absolutely no intention of torturing or killing you. Frankly, I'm too lazy to do that."

Han Rui took a step forward, and Su Meixue retreated with a step.

I can move again, Meixue thought while observing the approaching youth. But I won't be able to kill myself if this is another wicked illusion.

Lost in her thoughts, Han Rui's voice suddenly echoed. "First of all, I'm sure the Su clan must have placed some restrictions on you to stop you from talking about certain matters. Don't worry, none of that matters here. I'm not even interested in whatever plot the Su clan is cooking," Han Rui explained with a casual smile.

"W-What do you want then?" Meixue took another step back while observing her surroundings. Naturally, she didn't believe a single word of what the young man said, but she needed to play along.

"I really don't care about your mission here or what you plan on doing with the crooked soul or whatever, but I have an offer for you. One I think you'd very much like."

Han Rui reached into his inner robes before retrieving seven white beads which had different engravings on their surfaces. Meixue stared at the beads for a moment, but she didn't pay much mind to them.

Is he trying to trap me here until help arrives? She pondered silently. But could he be telling the truth? I have tried detonating the soul lock, and there's no response. What sort of formation can restrict the Su clan's soul lock?

Lost in her thoughts, Han Rui raised the seven beads which were placed in between his fingers, "How about ditching the Su clan and come work for me?"

"What?" Meixue doubted her own hearing.

"I said come work for me," Han Rui repeated with a smile. "Although your qualifications aren't good enough right now, it isn't irredeemable. Look at these beads, tell me which one you like best," Han Rui said as he tossed the seven beads toward the stunned girl.

Su Meixue absentmindedly caught the beads, her stunned gaze still lingering on Han Rui.

Does he really think I'm stupid? She didn't believe a word. No, there must be something more sinister at play here. She focused on the beads. Apart from their slightly squishy texture, they were far too ordinary.

Could it be that they're all different types of poisons, and he's telling me to choose how I'd die? The more she thought about it, the more she believed her conjecture to be true. She raised her head toward Han Rui, who continued smiling. I guess this is karma. I can't complain. I did try to harvest his soul after all, Su Meixue sighed, but there was no hate, anger, or regret in her limpid eyes.

She touched her hat, and the contraption quickly unraveled itself, revealing her scarred face.

"Oof. I forgot about your face," Han Rui commented from the side.

He rummaged through his robes again, before tossing a pill to the confused girl. "I don't know if you have always had that, or if it's something the Su clan did to keep you in check. Well, it doesn't matter. That pill should help you out, if you know what I mean," Han Rui said with a sly wink.

He really is planning on poisoning me to death, Su Meixue thought as she stared at the blackened pill which had miniature depictions of skulls on its surface.

"Don't worry, young master, I understand," Su Meixue said after a brief silence.

"Fantastic," Han Rui said, "So, have you decided which one you're going with?"

"It doesn't matter, young master. My fate is already sealed."

"Uh, what?" Han Rui blurted out; his confusion evident.

Meixue paused for a moment, then she continued, "I know it's impertinent of me to ask this of you, but can you bury me in the village a thousand miles away the Azure Cloud sect?"

"What the heck are you talking about? Why are you talking like you're dying or something?" Han Rui asked, more confused than before.

"Young master, there's no need to pretend anymore. I will gladly swallow the poison you gave me. I know my request is brazen, but I'd like to be buried in the spot where my—"

Han Rui interjected, "Hold on a second. I told you I want to recruit, so why in God's name would I poison you?" The young man massaged his temples while shaking his head. "Why do you cultivators like jumping to baseless conclusions?"

Su Meixue's brows creased as she heard Han Rui's statement. As a cultivator, she could easily pick up on even the faintest of whispers.

She stared at the beads and the pill once more, what are these if they aren't deadly poisons? She pondered silently.

"I can't believe I've to be the one to say it, but please send your qi into them," Han Rui whispered from the side.

Oh. I understand now. Since I tried to harvest his soul, he's trying to take me out in a similar way. My soul should implode as soon as I send my qi into any one of the beads. Then, the black pill will probably corrode my body from the inside, she thought.

Meixue raised her head toward Han Rui again, and he urged her to inspect the beads with a gentle nod and a thumbs up.

There's no point delaying the inevitable. I guess this is it, Meixue firmed her resolve. She took a deep breath, before sending her qi into the fifth bead.

Han Rui and the lush grassland disappeared. Meixue found herself before a blackened void; her trembling eyes focused on the majestic silver moon. The moon's radiance washed over her, cleansing, and transforming every fiber of her being. Stars lit up the darkness, exploding one after the other as if to acknowledge her presence.

She floated motionlessly in place, her eyes filled with an indiscernible gleam.

"Moonlight Serenity Physique," she muttered softly, and the vast expanse disappeared.

Meixue blinked multiple times, turning from side to side, noticing she had returned to the grass field. Did that just happen?

She raised her head toward Han Rui, who remained in the same position from earlier. However, she quickly focused on the beads once more. This time, she sent her qi into the first one.

Once again, Han Rui and the vast illusionary space disappeared, consumed by a raging inferno. Towering flames enveloped the young woman, but she neither felt heat, burns, nor pain. Instead, her warm gaze lingered on the soaring fire as a mother would stare at her child.

Suddenly, a voice echoed from the licking flames, "Child, come closer."

Meixue took gentle steps into the inferno, and the curious fire seemed to wrap around her body as if to greet her. She took ten steps before pausing, and right there, a behemoth creature stood.

How can something be this beautiful? Meixue thought, her quivering eyes lingering on the crimson feathers coating the creature's body. Although she could only see its feet, she could feel its intense gaze focused on her.

A rogue flame shot into Meixue's forehead, and she winced.

"Phoenix Flame Bloodline," she muttered softly. In a flash, the vast world of flames disappeared, and she returned to the grassland.

Wasting no time, and burning with unquenchable desire and curiosity, she sent her qi into the second bead.

Where am I this time? Meixue pondered, her curious eyes observing her new surroundings.

Water, blackened by the night, stretched as far as the eyes could see, and she weightlessly sank deeper into the seemingly bottomless abyss.

Is this what it's like to become one with water? she thought as she gently and listlessly sank deeper into the unforgiving sea. Although darkness shrouded her vision, she could sense the surrounding waters swaying according to her whims.

Water Nymph Essence… such a carefree physique, Su Meixue thought to herself.

The illusionary world disappeared, and the young lady returned to the grass field.

Meixue sent her qi into the next bead, and the one after that and the one after that, until she had experienced all seven beads. The entire experience lasted for only one hour, but the young cultivator believed she had experienced several lifetimes worth of experiences.

Her fiery eyes lingered on Han Rui, and she instantly fell on her knees. "Y-Young master, with the heavens as my witness, me and the last of my generations will serve you until the end of time itself. Should I break this vow, my soul will shatter and never to reincarnate," Su Meixue said solemnly.

The skies outside the manor darkened, and lightning snaked through the blackened heavens. Several members of the Han clan watched as a black lightning bolt descended from the transformed skies, and like that, the vibrant hue of the heavens returned.

Meanwhile, within the illusionary space, Han Rui wore a frown as he stared at Meixue.

Why are these cultivators so extra? I only asked her to choose a physique so that she can work better, who asked her to make a heavenly oath? He massaged his brows while taking deep breaths. That guy will be going on a rampage outside the manor right now. I didn't want to see that bastard anytime soon.

Meixue remained in the same kneeling position with her head bowed. All traces of her previous indifference and subtly arrogance had all disappeared.

"You didn't really have to make a heavenly oath, but what's done is done," Han Rui said with a sigh. "Please get up—"

Su Meixue interjected, "I apologize young master, but I'm not worthy to stand in your presence. If it was possible, I would bury myself in the earth while you ride the clouds."

Han Rui smacked his forehead. I thought she was normal. Did I make a mistake?

He took a deep breath before continuing, "Okay. So, which of them do you like the most?"

"Young master, someone of my status and aptitude isn't deserving of these immortal grade physiques—"

"For crying out loud, that's not what I asked you. Just tell me which one you like the most?" Han Rui interjected.

Meixue hesitated for a moment, "Young master, although I'm compatible with all of them, I believe I have a greater affinity with the Silent Shadow physique."

All seven beads, apart from the sixth bead, wiggled in Meixue's hand. Cracks slowly lined their surfaces as they emitted ethereal essence which the sixth bead greedily absorbed. Growing larger and larger to the size of a small pearl. A pitch-black glossy sheen coated its exterior, and an undiscernible golden mark ran along the length of the expanded bead.

"The Silent Shadow physique," Han Rui said excitedly. "I won," he said mentally.

[The host was lucky this time!]

"I don't want to hear it, pay up!" Han Rui said mentally.

[200 fame points have been added to the host's fame points!]

Han Rui's smile turned even brighter as he saw the system's message. What a huge pull. My luck is rather good today, Han Rui thought as he stroked his chin.

He focused on Su Meixue again. Since she has pledged a heavenly oath, I won't need to do anything else. All that is left is for her to go to that place and unlock her new physique. After that, I'll explain her role to her.

He then turned his attention to Meixue's palm, his eyes lingering on the pill with miniature skulls etched on its surface. Taking a closer look at it, I can understand why she thought it was poison.

"Keep the bead in your space ring for now. This place isn't suitable to absorb it," Han Rui advised.

"Yes, master," Meixue said, and the bead instantly disappeared.

"You can take the other pill now or later. It will help with your condition," Han Rui said.

The pill disappeared barely after Han Rui finished his statement. The young man strolled forward, stopping only when he towered over Meixue.

"From now on your name will be Shadow—"

[Jesus! Can't you be any less cringey!]

Han Rui's face reddened as a wave of embarrassment washed over him. Meanwhile, Meixue remained in the same position, patiently awaiting Han Rui's commands.

"You don't even know what I was about to say," Han Rui said mentally, unable to hide his embarrassment "It was going to be freaking cool, and it matches her physique too."

[Yeah, it's cool if you were eight. You were eighteen before you died, and you're eighteen now. You're too old for this!]

Han Rui's face reddened more than ever. He opened his mouth to speak, but Meixue's voice filled his ears, "Master, your servant, Shadow, awaits your orders!"

[….]

Han Rui's face reddened even further.

"Ahem, come with me for now. We'll discuss your duties after I'm done with my fight," Han Rui said.

Su Meixue's visage darkened. She couldn't understand who in their right mind would fight someone as mysterious and powerful as Han Rui. However, whoever they may be, she considered them her enemy too.

"System, send us to the location of the fight," Han Rui commanded mentally.

Instantly, an azure radiance covered the duo, and they disappeared from the grassland.

Meanwhile, outside the manor, a figure in black pranced around the entrance, occasionally banging on the door, "Let me in, you bastard! You're doing this intentionally, right? How dare you make a vow and lock me out?!"
