Turning the Field Around

The current situation looked really dire. Every second another soldier gets severely injured. James understood how the soldiers, on the frontline, facing these demonic hybrids felt. Seeing their friends lay on the ground, their own morale and eagerness dropped. And this was not everything. Besides the demonic hybrids, also the flying demonic beasts were also attacking several soldiers.

Before James could attack the demonic hybrid, he had to go through a few demonic beasts. Looking at the current situation, James charged forwards to one of the demonic beasts that was blocking him.

James could hear a loud shout from behind him. "Men! I understand that you are scared however, you are the shields that protect the kingdom." The voice was getting closer as it was being shouted.

Sparing a quick glance, James quickly looked behind to the source of the shouting. To his surprise it was actually The Royal Prince Gerald, who was trying to stabilize the field and turn the battle around. However, the sight that really shocked James was that Gerald was charging forward himself with sword in hand.

Unlike a leader that shouts commands from the backline, Gerald is more of a leader that leads his soldiers into the battle, and that he did do now.

Seeing this, many knights who previously lost their will to fight gained a second wind in order to attack their opponents. The thought of, "The duty of a knight is to protect its superior!" was going on in their minds. Gerald showing himself on the battlefield as well as his eagerness to charge towards the enemy sure helped the surrounding situation to improve slightly. Of course, there was still the fact that there are several demonic hybrids within the ranks.

"Soldiers, reform! Ranged units, loose on my command against the demonic hybrids!" Gerald shouted. It was clear that Gerald had a clear understanding on battle tactics. If the surrounding did what they are told, the chance of survival and winning the fight today will be increased. Luckily, having personally arrived at the battle field did help the morale of the surrounding. This made it easier for the soldiers to follow the order, as they were ones again willing to fight it out with the demonic beasts.

It did not take a long time before Gerald was able to reform the ranks of the soldiers. The soldiers were divided in 4 different layers of groups. In front of the formation, a few lines of heavy shielded units were formed. Directly behind the heavy units, soldiers with long distance weapons followed. These units were equipped with either a spears or a pole arm. The last row was filled with ranged units, including archers and crossbowmen.

The last group was made out of a bit more experienced soldiers, who were tasked with protecting the formations from the flying demonic beasts, as Gerald believed that they were able to win against these minor problem compared to their main target, the demonic hybrids.

As James had prior knowledge fighting against the flying beasts and surviving, it was expected of him to stand in the fourth group to try and protect the formations there were being formed in order to fight the demonic hybrids.

With the change in tides, James was ones again eager to go into the fray. It was clear that with the arrival of Gerald, that the soldiers were ones again in unison when facing their enemies. However, no one knew if this would be enough. All that they could do was to pray that the quick reorganization of the soldiers was enough to go through the battle.
