They say you truly know someone when facing hardship. That rings painfully true for us, orphaned and struggling to survive together. We believed in our camaraderie, forged through years of adversity and sacrifice. But when the moment of truth arrived, it all crumbled with shattered trust and broken dreams. 『 Author's note: Hey everyone! How have you been? I'm finally getting back to writing. I've been struggling a bit with creating plots and letting my egotistical imagination run wild here, haha. Anyways, I wanted to mention that the cover of this novel isn't originally mine. The background image of space was simply found via Canva, while the character was generated using AI. If it doesn't meet your liking, I can take it down and create a new one from scratch. Ciao!~ 』

Chapter 11: The Abyss

As they said, when you stare at the abyss, the abyss stares back at you. In the heart of the ancient forest of Western Europe, Leo and the Tarot found themselves standing on the precipice of uncertainty.

The looming threat of the black fog was a constant reminder of the peril they faced, yet amidst the chaos, they were already strategizing for what lay ahead.

"We need to find higher ground," Leo stated, his voice carrying an air of determination that belied the anxiety within him. "Somewhere we can see the fog coming before it engulfs us."

Anastasia, her gaze fixed on the darkening horizon, nodded in agreement. "North seems our best bet," she suggested, her voice calm despite the urgency of their situation. "We might spot a clearing or a vantage point."

Marko, standing beside Sofia, tightened his grip on her hand. "Leo's right," he affirmed, his voice steady. "We have to keep moving, keep ahead of that damn fog."

Sofia nodded, her eyes reflecting the flickering light of the campfire. "But what about Viktor?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "He could be anywhere, watching us."

Ethan, ever vigilant, scanned the shadows surrounding their camp. "We can't let our guard down," he warned, his hand instinctively reaching for the knife at his belt. "Not with him lurking out there."

Julia, clutching the incriminating paper in her hand, spoke up with resolve. "We'll watch each other's backs," she asserted, her voice steady despite the turmoil in her heart. "No one goes off alone."

Leo surveyed the faces of the Tarot, his thoughts racing as he considered their options. "We move at first light," he decided finally, his voice a beacon of authority in the uncertainty. "Stay together, stay alert."

Nikolai, emerging from his shelter with a yawn, rubbed his eyes sleepily. "What's happening?" he asked, his confusion palpable as he looked around at the tense group.

Katerina, always nurturing, approached Nikolai with a reassuring smile. "We're preparing to move," she explained gently, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder. "We have to stay ahead of the fog."

Boris, the Hierophant, played a soft melody on his harmonica, the melancholic notes mingling with the crackling of the fire. "Music might soothe our nerves," he suggested quietly, his eyes scanning the perimeter.

Gregor, checking their dwindling supplies, spoke up with practical concern. "We need to ration our food," he advised, his voice edged with urgency. "We don't know how long we'll be on the move."

Mikhail, his optimism undimmed despite the dire circumstances, grinned broadly. "We'll find a way through this," he declared cheerfully, his confidence infectious as he clapped a hand on Larisa's shoulder.

Larisa, her gaze fixed on the encroaching darkness, voiced her worries. "What if there's nowhere safe to go?" she asked quietly, her voice laced with fear as she looked to Daria for reassurance.

Daria, the World, gathered the younger ones closer to her, her protective instincts kicking into overdrive. "We stick together," she insisted firmly, her voice a soothing balm in the midst of uncertainty. "We'll find a way."

Andrei, the Fool, approached Leo with a sheepish grin. "Any chance we can just... run?" he suggested half-jokingly, though his nervousness was evident.

Leo chuckled softly, though there was little mirth in it. "We need a plan," he replied firmly, his gaze sweeping over the faces of the Tarot. "Running won't solve anything."

As they ventured deeper into the forest, the tension grew palpable. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves, set their nerves on edge. The Tarot moved as one, their determination unwavering despite the looming threats.

Without warning, a blood-curdling scream pierced the silence. It echoed through the trees, sending a jolt of fear through the children.

"Viktor!" Leo exclaimed, recognizing the voice. He motioned for the others to stay back as he cautiously approached the direction of the scream.

The Tarot, their curiosity mingled with dread, followed at a safe distance. They found Viktor, but the sight that greeted them was horrifying. Viktor's body had been reduced to nothing but bones, a grim testament to the horrors of the black fog.

"Oh my god," Sofia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in shock.

Ethan's face paled as he stared at the remains. "We need to move. Now!" he urged, his voice trembling with urgency.

Isabella, her usually stoic expression breaking, grabbed Boris by the arm. "Run!" she shouted, her powerful legs propelling her forward.

Panic surged through the group. The children broke into a run, their breaths coming in ragged gasps as they fled from the scene. The forest seemed to close in around them, the shadows growing darker, more oppressive.

"Don't look back!" Leo commanded, his voice barely audible over the pounding of their feet.

Mikhail, his usual enthusiasm replaced by raw fear, urged Larisa to keep pace. "Come on, we can do this!" he yelled, though his own panic was evident.

Gregor, his practical mind racing, tried to keep the group together. "Stay close! We can't get separated!" he shouted, his eyes darting around for any sign of safety.

As they ran, the black fog advanced relentlessly, its inky tendrils reaching out like malevolent fingers. The children could feel its cold, clammy touch against their skin, their hearts pounding with terror.

Finally, their legs gave out, and they collapsed in a small clearing, gasping for air. They had run until their muscles burned, but the black fog was still closing in.

Leo, his chest heaving, forced himself to stand. "Running won't solve anything," he reminded them, his voice resolute despite the fear gripping his heart.

Anna, her calm demeanor shattered, looked at Leo with wide eyes. "What do we do, Leo?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The black fog, now upon them, swirled around their feet, its presence chilling and suffocating. The children huddled together, their fear palpable as they faced the unknown.

"We need to stay together," Daria said, her voice steady despite the terror in her eyes. "We'll face this as one."

Julia and Anastasia clung to each other, their bond of sisterhood providing a small measure of comfort in the face of the encroaching darkness.

As the fog enveloped them, the world around them seemed to dissolve into a sea of shadows. The children held onto each other, their unity their only source of strength.

"Remember, we're the Tarot," Leo said, his voice firm even as the darkness closed in. "We face everything together."

Andrei, despite his usual carefree demeanor, felt the weight of the situation. "What's going to happen to us?" he whispered, his fear mirrored in the faces of his friends.

As the black fog consumed them, the Tarot clung to their resolve. They had faced betrayal, fear, and now the abyss itself.

Whatever lay ahead, they would face it as one, their bond unbroken in the face of the unknown.

The world around them vanished into darkness, but in the heart of the Tarot, a light of hope and unity still flickered.

Together, they would confront the abyss, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in the encroaching shadows.
