"Since all of you, the youngest generation of gu masters have broken through to the middle stage, you will now be allowed to choose another gu worm before departing for the succession trial under the guidance of a rank two gu master"

The elder spoke before walking towards the same cave where he had allowed Wei Huan and the others.

The young boys followed the elder, forming into a straight line. The boys walked into the gu treasury one by one to choose their second gu worm in preparation for the succession ceremony.

All of the boys walked into the treasury excited and walked out with bright smiles on their faces, ready to prove themselves.

It was finally Wei Huan's turn.

He walked into the treasury, the large vault door shutting behind him. Wei Huan immediately knew what he wanted to choose.

He turned towards his right, remembering vividly, the presence of a gu worm.

It…. was no longer there?.

"Did somebody take it already? Shit!"

"Too bad, I really wanted that one"

The Gu worm which he was speaking of was the "Spider Carapace" gu. It was a defensive transformation type gu worm which transforms the user's skin into extremely hard insect carapace.

Wei Huan wanted to sigh, knowing that there weren't any other worthwhile defensive type gu worms. Naturally, there were effective defensive gu worms however their energy consumption was too high or they weighed down the body, making it difficult for Wei Huan to use his sword.

"What can I do? Should I try to use a movement type gu worm or double down on attack?"

He looked around once again, just to see whether or not new gu worms were deposited in the treasury.

"Wait…. That wasn't there before…"

The gu worm that Wei Huan spoke of appeared almost like a large wasp, it appeared almost like a sculpture with a rough surface.

Wei Huan looked at the scroll beneath it. The yellow scroll read:

"Wasp Poison Gu"

Effect: Allows the user to excrete a slimy poison which can be used to coat weapons or added to food. This poison has the effect of near complete paralysis towards mortals and can be used to lower the speed of gu masters.

"This gu worm is pretty amazing. Not only does this slow down my opponent and stop them from attacking me. It also lets me and the others attack easier."

Wei Huan walked out of the gu treasury with a strange expression, pondering the different ways he could use this gu.

He followed the others towards the entrance of the cave, standing next to two boys as they spoke:

"What gu worm did you take, Hei Gang?"

"I took the Spider Carapace Gu. After all, I need a defensive gu worm along with my Beetle Strength Gu"

"So this was the fucker….." Wei Huan thought,

"What Gu did you take, Wei Huan?"

"I took the uhm… Wasp Poison Gu."

"Woah, are you trying to assassinate someone?"

"What the hell made you think that?!"

"Only assassins take poison path gu right?"

"No." Wei Huan spoke exasperatedly,

"What have you guys been doing all this time?" Wei Huan asked,

"Just cultivating…."

"Oh please! I see you around the liquor dispensary every other day at this point" another boy continued,

"Hey! Hei Luo, can't a man enjoy the privileges of adulthood!"

"You know that we can get all the liquor we want for dirt cheap once we come back right?"

"Oh… I forgot that gu masters get a discount…." The boy said with a small smile on his face

Wei Huan smiled, seeing the other boy's antics. He opened his mouth and spoke:

"We're gonna be alone for the first time."

"You know there's gonna be a rank 2 Gu master following us right?" Hei Luo spoke,

"Whatever, they're gonna be barely older than us anyway!"

"Yeah, let's have all the fun we can out there" Hei Gang continued,

"There's gonna be man eating beasts all around us man." Hei Luo warned,

"Even if we get into any actual danger, the rank two gu master will save us right?" Hei Gang retorted,

"What if we encounter a rank three beast?"

"There's like 6 of us and a rank 2 Gu master. Why can't we beat a rank 3?"

"Boys! You all must meet at the main gate before sunset. All those who are late will be left behind!" The academy elder commanded,

With the elder giving them a few hours to prepare, all of the boys returned home to say goodbye to their family and grab a couple things.

At sunset, all of the boys gathered near the main gate, the setting sun shining on their faces as they awaited the start of the succession trial.

"What is the succession trial?" You may ask. The succession trial was a sort of tradition among the tribes of the Northern Plains. It was most commonly done by smaller tribes and forces. Although the Hei tribe was a super force, the branch where Wei Huan lived was the equivalent of a medium sized force, thus this tradition was still carried on by them.

In the succession trial, any new generation of gu masters would be thrown into the wilderness of the Northern Plains, typically somewhere within the clan territory. They would be accompanied by a stronger gu master in case of emergencies.

This was for the purpose of teaching the youth of the clan the harshness of reality.

This was a contributing factor to the reason why the Northern Plains' gu masters have the strongest gu masters on average.

The young gu masters quickly split up into groups and were led outside the village by different rank two guides.

All of the other groups disappeared, Wei Huan's group being the last to leave.

Suddenly, a gu master appeared near them, saying:

"Hello, my cute little brothers! I assume you all have packed and prepared for the succession trial?"

This gu master was the rank two guide accompanying them. He had green eyes and black hair, wearing a dark green robe.

"Yeah, we're prepared" A large number of the boys said in unison,

"Alright, let's go" The rank two gu master said,

They walked away from the village slowly, their surroundings slowly becoming unrecognizable.

Everything looked the same, all was a vast grassy plain.

"Big Brother, what's your name?" Wei Gang asked,

"My name? My name is Wei Jia"

Wei Jia suddenly stopped, putting his hands out, gesturing for the others to stop as well.

"We are sufficiently far away from the village. The succession trial has officially begun, you may set up camp here or move to a better location."

"According to my instructions, I must not help you or interfere"

"This is it…. The succession trial has begun."
