Reverend Apocalypse

"Look! It's a meteor shower!" shouted Mark's mother, already pointing to the sky. Mark quickly turned his head away from the Dungeons & Dragons game that was over the kitchen table and glimpsed outside, "Wow! I never saw so many before!" he said while seeing the dark sky full of white strikes. "Can you turn the TV on? Maybe there is something about it on the news." asked Mark's father while washing the dishes from the dinner. "That can wait. Let's take a picture outside. The meteor shower will not last forever. Come you two, quickly!" shouted Mark's mother, already grabbing Mark's father's arm and bringing him outside. "You too Mark!" shouted Mark's mother, already outside, and when hearing that Mark took a deep breath and forced himself to go too, he hated to take pictures, but his mother would not let him off the hook no matter what.  Mark grabbed his cellphone and walked outside. "Ok, you two, give a long kiss. After all, it's your wedding anniversary!" said Mark, already unlocking the phone and pointing at them. Mark took the picture of both kissing with the meteor shower as a background, and he admitted to himself, the picture looked nice, but when looking at his parents again, Mark saw that the white strikes in the sky seemed way bigger than before. "I don't think is a good idea to stay outside," shouted Mark to his parents. "Don't worry son. Look! Everyone from the neighborhood is outside too!" said her mother, looking at their closest neighbor while waving her hand. Mark looked at his neighbor and waved his hand too. The man smiled back at Mark and exploded. Blood splashed the ground all around, turning the lawn red, while the man's hand flew high in the sky and fell only a few inches from Mark's feet. Mark, astonished, looked down at his neighbor's hand, still with the golden ring on it, and looked back to where his neighbor was before. But now, Mark saw a small beast crawling from the hole made by the meteor, the beast was barely 3 inches in size but was growing at an astonishing speed, and not even 2 seconds later Mark saw a beast the size of a cat coming out of it and jumping on the neighbor's wife, that was still there, on the door, in shock, not believing what was happening. The cat beast was extremely fast and in a blink of an eye ripped the woman's guts out of its belly. The scream made by the woman seemed to wake up everyone around and Mark's father shouted aloud, "RUN!!!!" … Currently releasing one chapter a day.

The day of dawn

The radio communicators all around the base suddenly started transmitting, but it was not only the radios, loudspeakers that stood spread around the base too, and the message that came from them was the same: "Attention everyone, do not turn off the radio, this is about you and your life" said the voice.

Malcom looked to his captain, and he immediately understood what to do. He had to go there to the radio tower and quickly stop the transmission.

The captain left and let Malcom alone, listening to the transmission, "The Union is hiding information from all of us. They do experiments in humans, experiments about mutations, yes you heard well, mutations. Every single living being on this planet is mutating, and with those mutations they gain strange powers, powers similar to the invading beasts,"

When Malcom heard those words, he immediately noticed that the riot down below the street suddenly stopped shouting their slogans, and the atmosphere became quiet but tense, but the troops from his army stood there too, they didn't move or attacked the people from the riot. they stood there, listening, because in the end, they were all just regular soldiers, receiving only a few credits to risk their lives for the union.

'Dammit, if things go this route we will have to kill everyone on this base,' he thought, because it was the only way to stop the people in this base from spreading the information.

Malcom put that thought aside for the time being and listened to the radio. He hoped they stopped transmitting, or that his captain reached the radio tower quickly, because in its mind it was the only way to avoid a bloodbath, but the radio continued, "The Union has dozens of laboratories like the one in this base, all of them doing experiments on people that gained powers by eating mutated animal parts, the army capture and kill every single person who comes in contact with powers, not only they kill, but they also steal its powers and give to their high-ranking officials,"

Malcom could hear talks and shouts coming from the riot, but it was not only from the riot, from his troops too. Glances were exchanged, whispers heard and fingers pointed. They were deciding who to trust.

"Why do you think they are doing this?" continued the radio.

"They are doing this to keep their positions in this new world, to keep everyone under control. They want you to keep risking your lives to eat another day, fighting for them, dying for them, and now that you know this, what do you think they will do? Cheer for you? Promote you to a captain? No, they will kill you all!!!" shouted the voice of Frank coming from the loudspeakers.

The atmosphere intensified as more and more people kept shouting and asking for explanations, but they were drowned in the crowd talks.

People didn't fully trust the union, but they depended on it. They were waiting, and they were divided. They were not sure who to trust, the voice on the loudspeakers or the union that fed them and sheltered them.

"You can't just trust what I say. You want proof, and I shall give to all of you!" said the voice on the loudspeakers, and just as the transmission ended, a man with military pants and a chest full of scars jumped from the middle of the crowd and stood above a light pole.

People were not stupid, and they knew a man could never jump that high, but not everyone saw what Mark did, nor everyone trusted this easily. Some even thought that it could just be a trick.

Mark looked below to the surrounding crowd. Hundreds of people gathered, all looking at him.

They were waiting for something to happen, waiting for something they didn't even know that they craved. Powers, the dreams of any human being. Some wanted to fly, others to have super speed or teleportation, while others just wanted to be stronger. They craved for that since they were child, be it for fun, for revenge, or for love, but everyone at some point in their lives had asked themselves what would be if they had something special in them, something unique. Something that could change their lives.

"I am your proof!!!" shouted Mark, using all the air in his lungs while activating his eye ability.

The moment his eyes glowed red, there was no more doubt in their minds. Everyone knew that powers truly existed, a man, standing above a light pole, full of scars and with glowing red eyes in the middle of the night. It was a view that no one would forget in their entire lives.

That was their proof, but more than that, that was what they craved to have.

What they didn't know was that this was just the beginning.

After a few seconds, Mark raised both arms high, and at that exact moment, explosions all around the base started, and from his position, Mark could see the flames all around the base, blasts of fire turning the dark night blazing red, as if the dawn decided to come earlier.

The explosions stopped, and Mark lowered his arms, and pointed his hand toward the army barracks, "Fight for your lives! Fight for your freedom!"

Mark didn't have to wait. Barely he said those words, and shots were heard, and the crowd rushed to the army barracks while shouting aloud, a cacophony of voices, the chaos of a battle, and the rage of common people.

"Freedom!" he heard an old lady shouting, and he smiled, but it was not a smile of happiness, but a smile of satisfaction, a smile because he knew that no matter the outcome of today, he was taking his revenge.

Dozens would die today, maybe hundreds, but Mark was happy, because today he would hit the union where it hurt them more. He was not going to just kill the ones responsible for his miserable days, no.

Mark was going to take what they truly cared about. He would take their authority, their superior positions, their power.
