Chapter 66 Calm before the storm.

Paul arrived at the spot where Anna and Fei Fei were resting with a few bottles of cold water mixed with some honey to help them regain their strength.

After distributing the water among the archers he cast a minor healing spell on every one of them.

This helped a lot since most of them had some kind of contusion from overworking their bodies.

After that, he took a look outside and saw the battlefield filled with thousands of dead beasts.

By his estimation, they managed to kill over half of the enemy force but if the beasts continued the attack then they would not be able to defend this place again, especially with the casualties they sustained.

Many wounded would need at least a few days before they could fight again and a few hundred people died while the rest was exhausted from the battle.

Some people were going around the walls removing the beast and human corpses and some even volunteered to go down from the wall and remove the corpses that piled under it.

Paul joined them since he had a lot of space in his spatial device and storage space.

Besides the beasts that they collected would belong to them so it was killing two birds with one stone.

Anna also joined them even though she didn't know how to climb a rope there was no problem as all she had to do was to hold on to it and the people on the wall would hoist her up.

It took a lot of time but they managed to remove all the corpses and even set a few bombs under the wall again.

-Do you think that they will try attacking again?

Anna asked once they were back on the wall resting.

-I have no idea.

Paul answered.

-If it was a human army then they would probably leave after taking such a beating but these are beasts and whoever is controlling them is both smart and ruthless.

So we might have to fight again.

-Even if this is the case there will be fewer of them now after what we did today.

Fei Fei chimed in.

-Maybe but we also used a lot of bombs and arrows so we might run out.

Paul said.

He was worried about that for a while now.

-You have nothing to worry about.

One of the guards who heard their conversation said.

-The mayor and our captain both like to be prepared so we have whole warehouses filled with arrows and another few full of arrowheads.

The civilians are now making new arrows all day long so we won't run out any time soon.

The guard added with pride.

-Well that's good to hear.

Paul said.

This took a load of his mind.

After some more chit-chat, he decided to cultivate since he used up a lot of mana and there was a chance that the beasts would attack again.

After cultivating for a few hours he replenished his mana and even went up a level which was a welcome development since he needed all the power he could get.

Paul tried to get some sleep once he finished cultivating but he could not sleep as he was trying to remember similar events in his previous life but nothing came to mind and this was too big to stay a secret so he would have heard about it.

Another matter altogether was the identity of the one commanding the beasts and their reason for attacking the towns and villages in this area.

Whoever it was they either had an escape route prepared or they were suicidal.

Everyone knew that the moment the governor sent his forces he would also contact the capital and request the help of the imperial army.

Once the army was mobilized and sent here, no matter how many beasts were around, they would all be exterminated and the culprit along with them.

Not to mention that controlling such a huge army of beasts required many tamers to be involved and if even one of them was captured then he would be forced to reveal who was behind this.

On the other hand, if it was a powerful beast controlling the army then it would be hunted down.

So no matter how he looked at it there was no motive that could explain all of this.

Unable to solve the mystery Paul finally fell asleep a few hours before dawn.

When he woke up he was alone and the sun was already high in the sky.

He looked around and found a note saying.

"Gone to take a bath, be back shortly, please make breakfast"

Paul laughed out loud at the note.

-Who the hell is the servant here?

He asked himself amused at the whole situation.

The good news was that there seemed to be no attack for now and he didn't have to cook since he decided to take out the skewers with the blood rabbit's meat.

Both ladies worked hard the day before and he decided to treat them to a delicacy.

Thinking about it he remembered when he made them at his little camp in the wilderness not long after he saved Mia and Maya.

It was only a few weeks ago but it felt a lot longer to him.

Paul made a salad to accompany the meat and the moment he finished putting it all on the plates, the ladies returned from their bath with some friends in tow so he simply made some more salad and took out a few more skewers to make breakfast for everyone.

The two girls accompanying Anna and Fei Fei were a bit shy at the beginning but they accepted his invitation to eat together.

Paul learned that both of them were also slaves and only temporarily sent to defend the town by their master since they were both cultivators and archers.

Their names were Wei Lan and Wu Yin.

During the meal, the two girls were shocked, not only at the tasty food but also at a master who cooked for his slaves.

This was something they had a hard time understanding.

-It's not that hard to understand ladies.

Paul said amused at their reaction.

-Both Fei Fei and Anna have a lot of good skills but unfortunately cooking is not their strong suit.

So I prepare the meals to live longer.

Paul said laughing at the ladies' reactions.

Anna was all red from embarrassment, Fei Fei looked like she was offended while Wei Lan and Wu Yin were shocked at his words.

It was also not only the food that they were shocked about but also that he treated all of them as his equals when they were slaves.

This was something they never experienced as slaves.

Paul was interested in how they met so they told him that during the battle they were standing together at the wall and while they were shooting arrows Fei Fei made sure that nothing would attack them.

After the battle, they all collapsed together and he even brought them water with honey but he must have not remembered them.

Then they met today at the baths and started talking after that Anna and Fei Fei invited them for breakfast.

Paul didn't remember them as he gave the bottles to many people and healed them so there was no way for him to remember everyone.

After the meal, they all sat together and started cleaning their gear since they were too tired last night to do that.

That was another shock to Wei Lan and Wu Yin as Paul sat with them and took care of his own gear instead of just ordering Anna and Fei Fei to do it for him.

The whole situation was mind-boggling for the two girls.

It was their first time seeing a slave owner cooking, treating the slaves like human beings instead of just his property, and even taking care of his gear.

He even cast a healing spell on the two girls when he saw that they had some problems with their backs and arms after the previous battle.

Both girls thought that they were dreaming and if that was a dream then they didn't want to wake up from it.

They were even a bit jealous of Anna and Fei Fei for having such a master.

They all had a great time chatting while cleaning their gear and once they were done they all went together to the wall to take a look at the situation.

Some people were getting jealous of Paul since there were now four pretty women walking with him but nobody dared to even say anything as he was now respected by everyone, especially after the last battle where he even risked his life to take down a beast that was three whole stages above him.

Not to mention his other merits.

Nobody knew that the real hero of that action was a stage three cultivator whose spear pierced the beast's heart.

Paul's spear broke only leaving a light wound on the beast's skin.

But that was the fog of war at work.

When they reached the top of the wall there was nothing in sight other than the dead beasts left from the battle.

-It seems that the beasts have given up.

Anna said, looking at the gruesome sight.

-It's possible but I would not bet on it.

Paul said pointing at the forest further away where there were many siluets of beasts moving between the trees.

-It looks to me like they are getting ready to try again.

Fei Fei said when she saw what Paul was pointing at.

-They may try but without the higher-stage beasts' support, it will be another massacre.

Paul said grimly.

-But if the stronger beasts attack, then we will be in a lot of trouble.

He added after a moment.
