Janet's POV
It has been over two hours since we have been running nonstop through the thick forest.
We needed to get as far as possible so that even if the future Alpha decides to come after us, he won't be able to catch up with us.
In case you are wondering how we are able to run for almost two hours without getting tired, we were in our wolf forms, and when we are in our wolf forms, running for two hours is like running for thirty minutes, so we are still far from getting tired, but unfortunately, after running for another hour, we had to stop because the evening darkness was quickly catching up on us and we needed to find somewhere to spend the night.
After shifting back into human form, Leroy brought out some clothes from the bag he took from the car and handed them to me to put on because we are always left naked after shifting from our wolf form to our human form.
After putting on my clothes, he asked me to set up the fire while he went around to see if he could hunt some animals for dinner.
After some minutes, he returned with two rabbits, and after slicing them, we roasted them on the fire that I had set up.
The atmosphere was cool as the both of us kept eating silently without uttering a word to each other. The only sound that could be heard was that of the fresh wind blowing around and also that of the crickets that kept making annoying sounds.
Our faces were lightened by the rays of the fire that was slowly burning.
As we were silently eating, I decided to break the silence.
"Leroy," I called out to him.
"Yes, Janet," he replied while peering into my eyeballs.
"Thank you," I said to him, and immediately he furrowed his brows at me.
"For what?" He asked me while munching the meat in his mouth.
"For everything," I said to him with a sincere tone, and immediately he smiled at me before picking up some wood that he had added to the fire so that it wouldn't go off.
"Don't mention it, Janet," he said to me with a warm smile.
"Can I ask you a question?" I said to him:
"Yes, of course," he said to me.
"Why are you doing all this? I mean, not only did you save me, but you also abandoned the pack because of me," I asked him.
Once I asked him the question, his facial expression changed.
He remained silent for a few seconds before replying.
"I'm doing all this because of the same reason why you murdered the Alpha," he said to me while peering into my eyeballs.
"What?" I asked him with a surprised tone.
"Because of revenge, Janet," he said to me with an icy glare.
"I still don't get it," I said to him with a confused tone.
"Do you think I was working in that palace on my own wish? No, Janet, I wasn't; I was only waiting for the perfect opportunity to make the Alpha pay for killing my sister, and trust me, if you hadn't killed him, I would have done it myself," he said to me, his voice arraying in anger.
With that statement, I went mute immediately. I kept staring at him, surprised, without uttering a single word.
I thought that I was the only one who had been victimized by the Alpha, but I didn't know that he too was among them.
After some minutes of silence, he continued:
"My parents died in a car accident when I was only fifteen, living behind my little sister and me.
After their deaths, I did everything I could in order to take care of my little sister; she was all that I had, and I was ready to do everything to protect her. As time went by, my uncle asked us to leave the family house and come and start leaving with them since their house was big enough to contain all of us, and secondly, they would also take care of us.
After discussing it with my sister, she accepted, but I, on the other hand, hated living under people, so I told her to go and stay with them while I left alone in the family house," he said to me before pausing for a little while.
"Time fled quickly, and before I could realize it, she was already eighteen, and unlike me, she found her mate in her eighteenth year, but just like you, she was rejected. When my aunty learned about it, she told her to go and complain to the Alpha about it unknowingly to them; her mate was the best friend of the Alpha.
When she complained to the Alpha about it, she was arrested for no valid reason and executed the next day," he said to me while cleaning the tears that were already dropping from his eyes.
"I was in the Moonstone Pack when I learned about it, and to be sincere, I almost committed suicide. I felt useless to myself, and as suicidal thoughts were running through my mind, I remembered that I needed to avenge my sister's death, and I can't do that if I'm dead.
"Without hesitating, I returned from the Moonstone Pack in order to avenge her death.
To begin, I first assassinated the best friend of the Alpha, who rejected my sister, and afterwards, I applied to become one of the guards of the palace, and luckily, I was accepted.
Once I was integrated, I started looking for every means to assassinate the Alpha too, but the opportunity never presented itself," he said to me. His voice was filled with anger.
"When I saw how the Alpha executed your parents, leaving only you behind that dungeon, I immediately remembered my sister; she was the same age as you when she was executed. I know how it feels to lose someone dear to you; I know what you were going through. That's why I decided to help, even though it meant I would leave the palace without accomplishing the main purpose of why I came there," he said to me with a dejected tone.
"Up to now, I still blame myself for my sister's death; she wouldn't have been dead if I hadn't allowed her to leave with my aunt. I didn't want to witness another person going through what she went through. I hope you now understand why I helped you."He asked me.
"Yes Leroy I understand, and I'm very grateful to you. Sorry for not also trusting you right from the beginning," I said to him, but he faked a smile without replying.
"Janet I think we should rest a little bit now; tomorrow will be a long day," he said to me while lying down on the dried leaves.
Without hesitating, I quenched the fire before lying beside him.
"Janet," he called out to me while turning his gaze towards me.
"Yes, Leroy," I replied.
"You better sleep with one eye open; we are not alone in the woods," he said to me before turning his gaze towards the opposite side.
"What!" I exclaimed brusquely.
Wow sleep with one eye open? Why will Leroy ask her to do that? Find out in the next chapter.
