(Kairo's POV)
I turned 15 this year, and so did many others in the orphanage.
We were excited to join the Marine.
They were excited because this would be their 'first steps to become a hero', while I was excited because I could finally start training in the Rokushiki fighting style.
I might even be able to awaken and train in the 3 types of Haki!
I looked around the area, trying to find any familiar faces.
I found Dragon standing among the midst of potential cannon fodders.
I was still looking around, trying to find a familiar face, when I heard the instructors introduce themselves.
"I am Dave, I am the assistant instructor for instructor Jeff."
"mynameisjeff"
"I am Zephyr, the head instructor for this Marine training camp."
"First order of business, we will sort recruits into 2 camps: the Elite camp, and the Standard camp."
"Dave and Jeff will be the instructors for the Standard camp, while I will be the instructor for the Elite camp."
"Do not worry if you don't get in the elite camp the first try, you can always apply for it when you meet the criteria."
"Now, to start the sorting, we will time and grade you on 3 things. Your endurance, your speed, and your Doriki value."
"We will start with your speed. Run as fast as you can."
Instructor Zephyr pointed us to a 5 km course, and we lined up in preparation for the run.
We were each assigned a number based on our order in the line, and I was assigned #420.
"No. 1: 8 minutes."
"No. 2: 9 and 28 seconds."
"No. 3: 7 minutes and 3 seconds."
"No. 8: 15 minutes..."
"No. 30: 6 minutes and 18 seconds."
"No. 69: 10 minutes and 11 seconds."
Oh... it was Dragon's turn now.
"No. 228: 5 minutes and 6 seconds"
"WOW!"
The recruits were surprised at Dragon's score because the highest anyone's gotten so far is 6 minutes and 18 seconds, and his score surpassed that.
Instructor Zephyr didn't look surprised either, probably because he knew that Dragon was Garp's son.
"No. 420.."
Oh, it's my turn now.
All of my childhood training will be put to the test now...
I dashed as fast as I could, gliding along the ground like a wind, and after a while, I reached the finish line.
"No. 420: ....4 minutes and 58 seconds."
"WOAH! HE SURPASSED THE HIGH SCORE!"
This time, Zephyr and Dragon looked surprised, while Instructor Dave and Jeff looked shocked.
'Thank god my childhood training paid off... a large part of my physical prowess is owned to my heritage as well. Heritage + Hard work + Death experience x4 = Strength.'
Or, they just didn't expect a genius to be in the orphanage.
After we were finished with the speed test, we got started on the Doriki test, and we kept our numbers from the previous test.
"Punch this machine as hard as you can. It can record up to a Doriki value of 5000.
Remember, a common armed soldier has around 10 Doriki on average, while a Doriki of 500 or more is considered superhuman."
"No.1: 285 Doriki"
"No. 2: 389 Doriki"
"No. 3: 69 Doriki"
"No. 8: 420 Doriki"
"No. 30: 1800 Doriki"
It seems like #30 is physically strong, I believe he got 3rd place after me and Dragon on the speed test as well, and now he's the first superhuman among the recruits.
"No. 69: 320 Doriki"
It's Dragon's turn now.
"No. 228: 2880 Doriki!"
This time, Zephyr raised his eyebrow and had an impressed look in his eyes, but the recruits weren't as excited as last time because I got first place last time, so they looked towards me with an expectant look in their eyes.
"No. 420: 3180 Doriki!"
Zephyr nodded with an approving look in his eyes, while the recruits looked toward me with envious gazes, and I ignored them like the bugs that they are.
Dragon had an excited look, probably because I was the first one at his age to surpass him at something.
Now, it's time for the endurance test and the one that I'm arguably the best at.
After being labeled as a masochist and training myself to the brink of exhaustion every day, I believe that I am the most durable in this camp.
"It would take too long to test every one of you individually, so we will do it all at once. For this test, you will run for as long as you can.
"START NOW!"
The recruits were in a frenzy. They tried to prove that they were the best, and they ran as fast as they can, rather than for as long as they can.
By 5 minutes, the recruits were running as fast as they could, but their bodies showed signs of exhaustion.
By 10 minutes, they kept on running at the same speed, but they will no doubt slow down.
By 20 minutes, the recruits who were running at full speed in the beginning slowed down significantly.
By 30 minutes, other recruits also slowed down to a light jog.
After 8 hours, the recruits started dropping.
After 12 hours, 30 recruits were left.
After 16 hours, only me and Dragon were left.
By the 20th hour, I was the last man standing.
I dropped after 20 hours.
"Good job, recruit #420. You are the last one standing for the running contest, dropping after 20 hours. You nearly broke the records, which was at 20 hours and 15 minutes.
I was happy. I was happy at being stronger than everyone else.
I was happy standing at the top of the recruit camp.
"Now that we're done with the testing, you can take a break."
"Alright, now that we got your data, we will sort you into the Elite and the Standard camps now. We will also put up the data of the top 3 for each test.
SPEED
1. #420, 4 minutes, 58 seconds
2. #228, 5 minutes, 6 seconds
3.#30, 6 minutes, 18 seconds
Doriki
1. #420, 3180 Doriki
2. #228, 2880 Doriki
3. #30, 1800 Doriki
ENDURANCE - RUNNING
1. #420, 20 hours
2. #228, 19 hours
3. #30, 14 hours
"The top 100 are automatically admitted into the Elite camp, while the rest of you will be training in the Standard camp. The difference between the Elite and the Standard camp is that the Elite camp will be able to learn fighting styles and techniques unique to the Marine, while the Standard camp will be developing your physical abilities, and skills in weaponry. The recruits in the Elite camp will also be able to go on expeditions with me to gain experience in things like capturing pirates, and guarding merchant ships."
"That will be all for today, return to your quarters and be present here by 8:00 AM tomorrow. Dismissed."
The recruits started walking back to their quarters, hoping that they were in the Elite camps, while Dragon and #30 looked at me with an excited look in their eyes, no doubt hoping to surpass me.
'I believe that Dragon might be able to rival me, but I doubt that #30 would be able to do it unless he's the bastard son of an Admiral or Vice Admiral.'
I hope I didn't jinx myself with that sentence.
A/N: Hey guys, I know that Rob Lucci's Doriki value is 4000, and our MC and Dragon are pretty close to that, but let me explain.
"According to Jabra, Doriki only measures someone's physical power and does not take into account the powers granted by Devil Fruits, despite that some Devil Fruits' (especially Zoan-types) directly increases someone's physical strength" - One Piece Fandom.
Since Dragon has been trained by Garp in this fanfic, and MC has been training since he was 5, along with the fact that he is Rocks D. Xebec's son, I believe that it would make sense for him to be that strong.
Also, the Doriki value only takes into account one's physical power, which means that the large boosts given by Zoan devil fruits do not count, nor does the fighting skills of the person.
He'd get absolutely demolished by Lucci if they were to fight right now, because Lucci has a Doriki value of 4000, and he learned the Rokushiki and has a Zoan devil fruit.
I'd very much appreciate it if you guys pointed out mistakes and inconsistencies for me!
